We may trade Renfroe and sign Schwarber.

Maybe they try to move Dalbec to LF, when Casas is ready.

Everyone wants to trade Renfroe. Even if his salary gets bumped to 7M that is still pretty cheap for someone who hit 30+ HR, and had 96 RBI. He might not do that again, and I’m all for replacing him, but trading him won’t get you a whole heck of a lot, and 7M is still pretty cheap for 1 more year. Putting Dalbec in LF to me is a no no, and like trying to stick Swihart out there. The jury is still out on what you will get from Bobby D, and if and when Casas comes up then deal with it then. Money that you are still trying to sign Schwaber with needs to go to pitching, pitching, and more pitching.

Maybe it nets you a couple prospects you could add to a top tier prospect and get yourself a starter. I think Bloom knows he caught lightning in a bottle with Renfroe and will look to sell high

Or maybe he doesn't try to break up the AL runner-ups and tries to add to them. The only team to last longer than Boston this October is losing one of their best players as it is...

Don't put Agon in the same category as Crawford or Price. He hit EXACTLY as he was expected to with the RS (can't recall--.290-.300?) and pretty much the way he did throughout his career.

AGon was the Betts in that trade - the good player LA wanted to get bad enough to take on everything else...

You’re right about Agon, but he was a bad fit in Boston like Crawford, and wanted out of town.

The only thing with that move is lots of Sox fans expected AGon to start launching more homeruns since he was leaving Petco for the friendly confines of Fenway.

On the field, he was good enough. He just wasn't a good fit off the field for this market.

Sox lucked into finding a new ownership group that wanted to make a big star studded splash. Beckett was still a good commodity at that time. Crawford was damaged goods, but there was hope that a change of scenery would fix his lagging production.

Agree, and that is what no one ever talks about when people say get this guy, or that guy is whether they can handle playing in Boston, which is huge, and not everyone can. Slacker, Crawford, Agon, and Price were not fits, but took the money.

The Sox have been bailed out twice by the Dodgers taking Agon, and Crawford off their hands, and taking Price, and I don’t know if they would get lucky a third time, so unless it’s for Raffy i don’t see them going real big anytime soon.

They may try and get Bogey and extend him, but I agree.

Trading him was to free up $7M and improve the D, and I only mentioned it as a way to get close to the same $40M winter spending budget we had last winter. Then, the "blueprint" could be nearly identical, except we'll sign 3-4 players not 8-10.

I did not say we'd sign Schwarber: I said we can. It's obvious Bloom likes him.

For the 20th time: I do NOT want to sign Schwarber.

Also, Beckett was a big part of the Crawford trade.

We could have signed E Rod too, but we didn’t. We could have signed Betts, and extend Bogey, and Raffy, but that didn’t, or hasn’t happened either. I’m all for improving RF, and the D, but putting Dalbec in LF like you mentioned earlier, or putting Schwaber anywhere in the field won’t do that either.

Beckett had worn out his welcome in Boston. Was he part of the chicken, and beer party?

So was Lester, but people wanted him to retire as a Red Sox.

Yes, but the Dodgers wanted him, too- not just AGon.

notin swears it was Punto that made the deal possible.

@JonHeyman

Red Sox are among many teams showing interest in Javy Baez, who enhanced his market by showing unusual plate discipline and finishing big with the Mets.

I thought it would be this:

@Dejan_Kovacevic

BREAKING: Source tells me Penguins will be sold to Fenway Sports Management, owner of Red Sox, and Liverpool FC, but that Mario Lemieux will retain a minority stake. Ron Burkle won't. He's out. Upper management, including David Morehouse, will stay

Makes sense Baez can play 2B well too and is an 80 runner. The thing with him is whether the plate discipline can turn. If he is a .340 OBP player, then he is an MVP caliber package. If it is more like his normal .320 OBP, he is a good player but finite. He is young enough to think you can unlock the latter. Now, the Red Sox had a lineup of pretty good approach guys last season - how much of that can be taught is the question. He is the best fit of the top shelf dudes for sure - well besides Correa but let's set him aside.

I'm unsure. Baez is the biggest whiffer of all the big time free agent infielders, and the only one that had an attitude problem with his fans last summer. Are you sure that kind of guy will get $100+ million dollars from Chaim Bloom, who has yet to sign any Red Sox player for more than two years?

How about $125M/5??

His existing contract has 4 years and $80 million left.

Your offer is reasonable, but in the current market it's probably light. I'd go $150/6, but that would probably be light too!

We’re about the same amount as I would have the extension kick in after next year, so counting that it would be $145M/6. Anything more than that would be see you later.

I wonder if JH decided that the 217 million for Price was the highest he ever wanted to go. When you think about it a bunch of other teams have given out contracts higher than that. Even Seattle!
