Yes, the MOST any DH should make is about $15 million.

Yeah, the Sox paid a premium to bring JD in. It worked out well though.

Ok, so you prefer fWAR except when you don't like what it shows. Got it.

No. I merely provided the bWAR numbers along with other stats. Where did I say I now like bWAR better or that fWAR is meaningless? You are reading things into my statements that aren't there.

I like fWAR better than bWAR, but I have never come close to saying any one stat or metric tells the whole story.

The fWAR numbers do make me think longer and harder about Bogey's value when compared to others.

I think defense at the SS position is highly important. It's been my position for over 40 years. Am I overly biased? Maybe. Probably.

So, if it's all about fWAR:

19.3 Semien

18.8 Bogey

There are, of course, other factors:

Age

Cost

Years

How much is defense valued vs offense in WAR and in personal opinions

Intangibles

Leadership

If it came down to this, I'd choose Baez or Semien over Bogey:

(All contracts bring players to age 35...)

$27M x 6 Bogey (29) extension beyond 2022

$26M x 5 Semien (31)

$23M x 7 Baez (28)

I know my initial statement compared the 3 at the same contract rate, but to me, these numbers are probably more realistic as a comparative decision.

Hiroshima Carp To Post Outfielder Seiya Suzuki For MLB Teams

The slugging right fielder is considered to be among the very best players in NPB at the moment and is putting the finishing touches on a monster season that has seen him slash .319/.436/.644 with 38 home runs, 26 doubles and nine steals (in 13 tries). That’s hardly a one-year fluke, either; dating back to 2018, the right-handed-hitting Suzuki has put together a combined .319/.435/.592 batting line with 121 home runs, 115 doubles, four triples and 44 stolen bases (albeit in 72 attempts) through 2167 plate appearances. Unlike many sluggers, Suzuki achieves this production without selling out for the power. Since 2018, he’s fanned in only 16.4 percent of his plate appearances — compared to a nearly identical 16 percent walk rate.

I just looked out the window to double check, and confirm that it is actually 2021, not 2001.

Nelson Cruz has never made more than that.

Ortiz topped out at 16 mill.

That was one of Miley's best seasons too, 2.7 fWAR.

He had a $10M option with a $1M buy out.

Doesn't it seem they could have traded him?

I'd have given Potts & Rosario for him.

@Cubs

The #Cubs today claimed LHP Wade Miley off waivers from the Reds.

Miley was actually pretty good last year with his 3.37 ERA supported by a 3.97 FIP, so it's more surprising to me was that he was waived in the first place.

Of course, Joe Castiglione did denounce him as an insufferable human being. Not by name, but mentioned his least favorite was someone who "threw a no hitter this year."

Yes, and does Scwarber belong in that class? (Cruz, Papi, JD)

I'm wondering if $14M x 4 is too much. He's no better defender than JD, Papi or Cruz.

Remember when our GM was bashed for getting this guy?

But Wade Miley (and Jonathan Aro) netted the Red Sox Carson Smith (and Roenis Elias).

Sox did spend $239M (2018) and $243M (2019). Cot's has Sox at $35M under the current $210M cap (Vaz option not picked up).

At $240M, we potential have $65M less $7.5M for Vaz or say $57M. If JD opts out, that will be close to $80M available. Trade Xander, sign Semien, Schwarber, Correa and a starting pitcher. Price, Eovaldi, Kike, Vaz money all come off after 2022 for combined total of $48M.

Be bold, think big.

Hang’em Chaim needs to just say “no” to a Kelly reunion!

He sucks at $12M, just like JBJ sucks at $12M. Get over them.

This is not the fantasy thread.

No imagination....we'd get back close to the tax limit after 2022.

You also think Houck and Whitlock should be destined to bullpen while giving a $8M a pitcher a $10M raise because team wins when he starts. Everyone knows team wins and losses are not good barometer of pitcher's effectiveness. He's just a good luck charm.

If I recall, Porcello won with tons of run support when he pitched. Let's bring him back.

Payroll for 2018 and 2019 are facts. Do you have inside information on how much Bloom can spend? I'd say history is good indicator of future.

What the hell would you do with $100M?

Obviously you're willing to pay a mediocre starting pitcher $18M after that stellar season when for less than $1M, Whitlock can pretty much pitch to similar stats.
