We'll just have to take Bloom's word for it that the price at the deadline was cost prohibitive and there were no other arms to get.

Apparently, he looked into a lot of player's availability and the return cost was too high.

I trust he tried hard to get a pitcher and 1Bman.

If people think he didn't try, I think you are wrong.

If people think he should have given up some decent prospects, I'd probably disagree, but without names, it's hard to know. I trust Bloom knows the values of prospects and the value of 2 month rentals and longer term players.

Then why trade the team’s #9 prospect for a guy on a one year deal with a mutual option?

Maybe he thinks he can re-sign him. Schwarber isn't a 1b man, as you know. I don't think he has ever played that position.

The defense, which already sucks, gets even worse, this way.

I would maybe do this a few days, but I would not play Duran v LHPs with hopes he starts hitting righties, soon.

When Schwarber starts playing, I would not limit Kike's playing time, at all. He'd play mostly CF and some 2B, when Arroyo sits and Duran plays CF vs some righties.

I might lightly platoon Renfroe and Verdugo to get Duran and Arroyo more playing time, assuming they both hit well enough.

Well, once the team is complete, my untouchables and who IMO have to play almost every day are (in this order):

Devers

Xander

Verdugo

Arroyo

Shwarber

JD

Renfroe

Kevin (yes, over Vazquez)

Then I have these guys in the mix who can share some roles depending on the situation:

Duran

Kike

Muñoz (he is someone I want in this tram already)

Vazquez

Cordero

Dalbec

Next to never.

He played 2 games at 1B for Wareham in 2013.

Odd choice, getting just Schwarber. Maybe Bloom doesn't see this team as competitive this year and is planning for bigger things in the future.

Sell high on an injured prospect.

I think Kike needs to play everyday, except for normal rest. If he starts slumping, maybe play him 8 or 9 games out of every 10. He could play CF vs all LHPs and some RHPs, as Duran starts maybe 3-4 games out of 10 in CF.

When Duran plays CF, Kike plays 2B (Arroyo sits a few games out of 10) or rarely at 1B, once Schwarber has shown he can play 1B FT.

To get Duran more time, we could sit Verdugo vs some lefties and play Duran, then, or sit Renfroe a little more than normal rest.

Something like this:

C: Vaz 6-7 out of 10/ Plawecki 3-4 out of 10

1B: Schwarber 9 out of 10/ Plawecki or Dalbec 1 out of 10 (Kike?)

2B: Arroyo 7-8 out of 10/ Kike 2-3 out of 10

3B: Devers 10-10

SS: Bogey 10-10 (try to get him rest for his wrist, once Arroyo returns)

LF: Verdugo 8-10/ see RF 0-1 (Duran/Schwarber 0-1 w Plawecki at 1B)

CF: Kike 6-7/ Duran 3-4

RF: Renfroe 9-10 (Verdugo 0-1)

DH: JD 10-10 (Schwarber w Plawecki at 1B)

Total Starts Only:

10-10: Devers, Bogey, JD, Kike

9-10: Renfroe, Verdugo, Schwarber

7-9: Arroyo

6-7: Vaz

4-6: Plawecki, Duran

0-1: Dalbec, Marwin, Cordero

For the Scherf deal, he was also asked about Kutter and Brandon Walter but said no (not a package deal, still just a one for one).

Sounds like he did good holding off on those 2.

My guess is, he has several similar offers where a fall back prospect could not be agreed upon.

I'd rather have Chavis than Robles.

We gave up 23yo oft-injured A-baller and former notin dark horse favorite Alex Scherff for Robles…

I'd rather have Aldo than an injured Schwarber for 100 AB's and a mutual option.

Looks that way, now, but I think Bloom was not able to foresee a new injury, and maybe he values the edge he might have on extending Schwarber beyond 2021.

It is a questionable deal.

For want of a nail, a shoe was lost , etc. You might wind up losing the battle, but look at the money you saved on the nail.

We got the great Austin Davis for Chavis.

Keep your future DFA'd players straight!

Maybe we find the shoe in 2023 or 2024, when we aren't hampered by mega 2 or 3 tier taxes.

Maybe "the nail" is not in the 2021 coffin, just yet.

Ramirez was a borderline top ten prospect in a mediocre to subpar farm system. While he might make MLB, what’s his ceiling? The next Noe Ramirez?

I have very little doubt that anyone will miss him and the Sox can’t find 2 or 3 guys just as good..

Quick question: Is notin the new Dojji?

No. He’s more analytical and less humorous (or at least he doesn’t try to be humorous.)

Also I’m more handsome…

Not even a question. I was referring to the love of somewhat unheralded prospects.

Aldo's value will be higher than 100 ab's from Schwarber over the next few years.

Was Aldo supposed to be added to the 40 man this offseason? I thought that wasn't until the following offseason.

Aldo was not a rule 5 player, so we did not gain a 2022 roster spot by trading him.

We did by trading Chavis, but he may have been DFA'd anyway.

So no added bonus there. If Schwarber agrees to the option, the deal is fine. It's iffy IMO if it's only for this injured season.

I fully understand the reluctance to spend a buck to bolster this roster for the stretch run. After all , this is only a 3.5 billion dollar empire.

The bigger problem at the deadline was not having the prospects. It had little to do with money.

We could've Jimenez into a package of some sort.... Kid will never make it past AA at best. Hitting around .300 in Salem and is shaky as hell in CF. As far as Barnes.... I bet he goes on the IL real soon with a mysterious injury or the Covid List.
