Renfroe has come up in some big spots and has not delivered. Arroyo has been barely adequate. At least he's made some good defensive plays.

Dalbec should have been given some more AB's. Not starting him against LHP is weird IMO.

Agreed.

Renfore's .421 OPS and singular RBI in this series might need to take a seat on the bench, Dalbec at 1B, Schwarber in LF, Verdugo in RF...

I think the hope was that Renfroe would do well vs lefties. Sitting Renfroe vs righties works against the notion of playing Dalbec vs lefties.

Sitting Verdugo for Dalbec made more sense, in terms of L-R splits, but Verdugo caught fire.

At this point, I'd play Dalbec over Renfroe no matter who is pitching.

It doesn't have to be Renfroe OR Dalbec. I would have sat Schwarber yesterday and played Dalbec. Can always bring in Schwarber once the LHP is out.

True, but the way renfroe is hitting and hitting into DPs, I'd choose to sit Renfroe, who could also be used to PH later.

Schwaber is 3-21 against Houston. Outside of his slam he has done nothing. 3-21 is not hitting.

It's better than ...

7 for 34 with 7 GIDP (Renfroe)

and

0 for 11 (Dalbec)

I’m not disputing that about Bobby D, and Renfroe. I’m just saying that Schwaber going 3-21 is not hitting.

I think he has kept a big weapon on the bench.

But Renfroe is going for a DP record.

Indeed, but with one of those 3 hits being a granny, I'm not benching him over 3-21.

I didn’t say to bench him, but you did agree 3-21 is not hitting.

Interestingly, his .217 OBP is less than Renfroe's...

3 for 21 is not good, but I never look at just BA. OPS is more important, and that is pretty bad, too (.551), but if you count the Yankee game, his OPS is over .700.

I'm thinking he might bust out Friday. (Maybe it's just hoping.)

For whatever reason , a lot of folks just take a liking to some players and a dislike to others. And that influences their opinions. Objectivity can be hard to come by. It's just human nature , but it is something to try and overcome.

I'm thinking a few Sox are bound to... vs. Garcia with a knee problem, Odorizzi with mild cheese, even Javier, who threw a lot of high leverage pitches Tuesday.

If we can't score Firday, then we don't deserve to go on. I'm not usually one to make statements like this- based on one game, but it's make or break time. There will be no Framber on Friday.

Time to wake the echoes.

One final transaction for the year:

@PeteAbe

#RedSox reinstated RHP Phillips Valdez from the COVID-19 Related Injured List. OF Franchy Cordero was DFA’d.

That's actually big news, to me anyway. I didn't think Cordero would be even on the bubble list, this winter.

Maybe Valdez will be added to the WS roster. Yes, you heard me! WS ROSTER!

It should, of course, be noted that the DFA of Cordero hardly closes the book on the Red Sox’ end of the Benintendi deal. The Sox still have four other players to show for that deal, though none has reached the Majors yet. Boston acquired right-hander Josh Winckowski and outfielder Freddy Valdez from the Mets (who received Khalil Lee from Kansas City), in addition to picking up righties Luis De La Rosa and Grant Gambrell from the Royals. Cordero was certainly the most recognizable name going back to Boston in the swap, but he wasn’t necessarily the key player in the deal.

As for Benintendi, he had a fine debut campaign in K.C., slashing .276/.324/.442 (106 wRC+) with 17 home runs, 27 doubles, two triples and eight steals (albeit with a woeful success rate, given his 17 attempts). He’s controllable for one more year via arbitration, with a projected 2022 salary of $9.3MM (courtesy of MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz). -mlbtr

Beni would not have been an improvement over Verdugo or Renfroe.

He’s a FA after next season.

The money saved got us Renfroe.

We still have 4 decent prospects in that deal.

I've been wrong about a lot of things, and being as opinionated as I am, I've put a lot out there.

One thing I got right from even before day one was putting Kike in CF. The guy has been better than any Sox player I've ever seen in CF.

Here's a great article that shows why...

BOSTON -- Kiké Hernández didn’t even want to play center field when the 2021 season began. Crazy, right? Given how boisterous he’s been while playing defense in the American League Championship Series, especially when making some incredibly flashy plays, it’s hard to believe that Hernández had pause at the idea
