Back to the debate on Bloom's failures at the deadline, Tomase nails it:

Isn't hindsight wonderful.

Why not mention Kimbrel?

BTW, Bloom just acquired Brad Peacock. Forget the hindsight: good move or bad?

RP'ers are pure guesses at the deadline. Bloom guesses wrong. Get out the firing squad.

The Astros gave up Abraham Toro, an MLB-ready infielder who can hit to get Graveman. Who was the Sox better offer? Ditto with Bryce Wilson.

Austin Davis did have a uninspiring 5.11 ERA for Pitt, but suddenly pretending Clay Holmes and his 4.93 ERA for Pitt was the obvious choice is just hindsight.

Chafin and Tepera were both having great seasons, and Tepera especially with his AL East experience and underrated career should not have been ignored. That he went for the White Sox 30th best prospect (pre-season Fangraphs ranking with 35+ FV) makes it more glaring…

There seems to be quite a few exceptions to the " no trades ,waiver claims or cash deals after the deadline " rule.

Peacock was never on the 40 man roster and was on a minor league deal. That seems like a fair and obvious exception.

If I had to guess, I would think these types of deals are allowed to prevent players from stagnating in the minors while actual positions in MLB in other orgs are possible…

It's hard to imagine BP looks better than Brasier, Valdez, Seabold...

It appears that the change is there are no more trades after July. In the past we saw some big trades like the Red Sox-Dodgers trade in 2012. Now it's just outright releases that can be claimed?

Chafin and Tepera definitely look like misses.

Yes, or trades like the Peacock one, where he was not on the 40man and was on a minor league deal can be traded for cash.

And one more thing: stay the heck away from the Talksox game thread. :)

I can pretty much spew darkness on that site.....

Veteran reliever Joe Smith would have been an interesting change-of-scenery trade target.

Smith, whom Houston traded with Abraham Toro for Kendall Graveman and Rafael Montero, has posted an 0.84 ERA and 508 ERA+ in 11 appearances with Seattle (despite surrendering a grand slam to Salvador Perez).

Rafael Montero likewise has bounced back with a 0.00 ERA in an admittedly small sample of six innings with the Astros.

But it's all gamble with relievers at the trade deadline.

Interesting that the Rays started a 21 year old against us tonight. Would the Sox move a young player up that quickly?

Would the Sox trade away a Cy Young winner with multiple years of control left to get a 21yo MLB-ready pitcher?

The idea that trading for relievers is all a gamble or crap shoot is total speculation; it is not based on fact, and it isn't something we can know for certain.

It’s not a gamble but the criteria Tomase used to judge some of his deals was crap. Holmes and Davis were essentially the same pitchers in Pittsburgh, and actually Davis was arguably better. That Holmes has pitched better since the deal is just hindsight…

Maybe or maybe not.

One-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell and 21-year-old Luis Patino have graced my fantasy team this year: Patino in my lineup tonight after I traded Snell's expiring fantasy contract for a draft pick that snagged Edward Cabrera, the rookie Miami righthander.

To answer the question: no.

It's a repeatable skill by every GM.

What is about Rays jersey so magical when it comes to pitching?

Boston lost 6-1 here to the Rays on Monday as the offense went silent against rookie starter Luis Patiño. The 21-year-old from Colombia allowed only one run, five hits and one walk while striking out five.

The Red Sox recorded just six hits (five singles) and had just two at-bats with runners in scoring position (0-for-2). They left six men on base.

Hell no. We don't have quality pitching evaluators.

If he was a stud. Sox started Xander Bogaerts at 20 years old. Yes, he's a hitter and not a pitcher but the lesson is the same. If you're a phenom you fly through a system quickly, but we shouldn't expect most players to progress like that.

“Right now, as I told the coaches, this is not the time to quit,” Cora said. “This is not the time to feel sorry about us. We’ve got to keep pushing these guys to be great like we’ve done the whole season. Is it a challenge? Of course it’s a challenge. It’s not easy. A lot of teams have gone through (it). It’s just kind of like the timing of it, right? It’s a little bit tougher. But we’ll be OK. We’ll show up tomorrow. I’ve always said, ‘When? Where? And we’ll be there.’ And we’ll play with energy and try to win a ballgame.”

Mr. Cora, believe me, you get no sympathy from me. We deal with this every day in high school.

It's a near total crap shoot. Bloom guessed wrongly.

Pretty hard to see much upside on Robles and Davis though. And the fact the deals weren't even known about until the last minute suggests Bloom was running around the flea market looking for anything that was left at closing time.

Look, I like Bloom a lot, but like every other exec we've had, sometimes he has to take some heat too.

Yeah, I thought not spending capital on expensive starters when you had Sale coming back and getting a bargain on Schwarber (compared to what Rizzo cost) was a real steal, but the bullpen arms were a head-scratcher. I know Robles had been good against lefties so he made sense but they really could have used an extra late-inning bullpen arm. Ottavino and Barnes are just taxed, I brought this up over a month ago too. I said that Barnes was on pace to throw a record number of innings and that if the bullpen is not managed better it's going to start falling apart.

It's not all on the bullpen, the starters in the lineup have been very lackluster lately too. In the beginning of the season, the lineup seemed very unbalanced and top-heavy but it didn't seem to matter because all those guys were racking, but not they're starting to get exposed. It's not that I'm giving up on the season, but things don't look great. We could very easily be looking back at the end of this year and have witnessed the Sox pull it back together while teams like NY and TB go on to slump, it sure doesn't look that way now but they could saying in NY come October that they peaked too soon.
