What 40 man roster crunch?

J.Winckowski

D.Feltman

K.Crawford

V.Santos

----That’s 37 players, leaving 3 spots open (did I overlook someone?) NOTE: I’m assuming JD opts out. Also: I'm not sure about Feltman making the 40 man roster, he might be kept off. I'm guessing Santos makes it, since Bloom traded for him---

As far as the open spots go, I would think the Red Sox go all out to resign K.Schwarber. They should look to add a really good bullpen arm in free agency. I’m not sure about E-Rod, he might want too much money and might not be brought back. In addition, the Red Sox have a lot of starting pitching depth and I'm not sure if E-Rod is really worth a sizeable contract.

I only have 3 outfielders on the 40 man (minus G.Jimenez) and so the Red Sox will need to get something figured out there. As far as Rosario goes, he isn’t hitting this year, but maybe the Red Sox keep him around for his speed and defense.

Free Agents:

JD Martinez

E-Rod

K.Schwarber

Andriese

Ottavino

G.Richards

M.Gonzalez

D.Santana

H.Robles

Deactivated/Released/Traded

Cordero

Rosario

Potts

Y.Rios

I am guessing Casas gets a cameo late this year and then has a chance to make the 40 man by mid next year. If JDM opts out, we need to sign Schwaber to take his place. Schwaber can play left field against national league teams in their stadia. I don't think we hold onto Dalbec for 2022, especially if Casas is projected in. Andriese, Ottavino, Richards, Gonzalez and Santana are most likely gone and we don't know enough yet about Robles.

If Mata is left off the 40 man roster can another team claim him?

If so are they allowed to move him off the 40 man roster to 60 day IL?

If so why can't we do the same?

Can someone explain to me the mechanics for someone like Mata?

You can’t shelter players on the IL over the winter. They take up a slot on the 40.

Bye bye Wilson, too.

Schwarber will be on the 40.

If we sign 4 free agents, someone goes.

It'll be interesting to see what JD does. He'll make $19.375, Sox being charged $22M for Luxury tax purpose.

I'm wondering trading for Schwarber was a hedge for JD opting out. Yeah I know he's a FA.

Would Schwarber take a 6 year $90M deal?

I'm an IU grad so I'd like for him to stay. His group turned the baseball program at IU. He hit 2nd and caught. He can hit.

It's difficult for me to justify paying JD the same amount as Xander who plays ss.

JDM is slumping now so teams might not be interested in him for $20 mil for 2 or 3 years.

A-Rod was saying on the broadcast that some teams believed Schwaber wouldn't be back until the end of August so lost interest in him.

Does he have access to schwaber’s doctors?

No, but he had talked to other teams that evaluated him before the trade and they may have known something.

Tough loss for Pivetta......

After retiring first 8 batters, he walks the ninth batter in 4 pitches. The leadoff batter hits a home run for 2-0 lead.

After a base hit, he throws a wild pitch, then a single brings the runner in.

When the team is not hitting behind you, you can't make mistakes.

JD's not opting out; he has a mansion to maintain. He'll be quite happy with the 19 million guaranteed. I doubt the SOX will even be able to trade him during the offseason w/o eating a lot of his contract. Something the SOX FO is familiar with doing.

Martinez bat speed appears slower than in April. He may be running out of juice for these last 60 games.

That's the nightmare scenario: JD Martinez has a lousy second half, doesn't opt out, and the Red Sox are stuck with him for one more year at 20 m. Will that impact the Red Sox's ability to resign Kyle S.? I hope not.

As far as Dalbec goes, I hope he is off the 40 man too, but the Red Sox front office seems to have some kind of blind spot for him and so he might stick around.

It would make sense to dump Dalbec, find a real major league first baseman, and use Kyle S. as the primary DH. No Dalbec, no Martinez. Alternatively, if JD doesn't opt out, he continues as the DH and the Red Sox resign Kyle S. for 1b in 2022. In 2023, JD is gone, Kyle S. moves to DH, and Casas is the starting 1b.

Mild disagreements:

-JDM being around for 2022 is not a 'nightmare scenario'. It's one more year and the Red Sox are a rich team.

-It's not really a 'blind spot' for Dalbec. They thought they could get reasonable production out of a guy who's being paid minimum wage, which made sense considering their payroll concerns.

Red Sox Stats

On swings at pitches in the heart of the plate Dalbec misses or hits a foul 67% of the time, that is 4th most among 197 batters with 200+ heart swings.

That's on top of his poor pitch recognition outside of strike zone.

Love to love him but he sure is making it difficult.

Yet another superb performance by Whitlock last night. Sure would be nice to see him start 2022 in the rotation.

It would be criminal not to do it.

As seen by recent slump all around, you need a line-up 1-9 to get through the 162 game schedule. You can't have two or three black holes in the lineup.

Everyone here got on my ass about not being dependent on 2-5 guys. Mathematically it's pretty hard to sustain team offense with 4 guys.

I think Schwarber will play first, and Dalbec will be confined to some starts against lefties and fill-ins.

At this point, Bobby Dalbec is in danger of being optioned to AAA.

I never meant to get on your ass about anything. My attitude has always been I trust Bloom and Cora to handle things as well as possible.

Some of us wanted to give Kike more time to get it going, and he did.

Some of us were skeptical about Duran's ability to step right in and rake MLB pitching, and that appears justified.

Aside from Duran, there weren't many internal options to improve the offense.
