It is sounding more and more like Duran will get the call soon.

I am guessing that relief pitching is high on Bloom's radar.

Relief pitching should be on everyone's radar. So many games come down to a battle of the bullpens these days.

If we end up being sellers, Barnes & Ottavino might fetch some nice returns.

Let's not even talk about that until about a month from now.

How likely is it that hang’em Chaim is a seller at the deadline?

Our minor league pitching is so lean, it makes a toothpick look fat. Trading off major leaguers with value for quality pitching prospects makes a lot sense for long term success, but it sacrifices short term success.

This team is imploding. Forget the score. Look at the way they're playing. They got bailed out by Pivetta.

We are stubborn about not bringing up a leadoff batter that's tearing it up in AAA, not AA, but AAA. How many more bats do you think he needs seeing the same AAA pitchers?

Why not try Whitlock as an opener then stretch him out each outing?

The team needs a left handed bat and infusion of some athleticism.

Speed kills.

I'd think Duran is ready, but I'm not an expert.

I don't think we are imploding.

I see 3 of our SP'ers starting to show signs of coming out of their 3-5 start funks.

Sure, I hope they DFA Santana and call up Duran, tomorrow, but if they wait another day, week or month, I'll trust they have the right reasons.

I'm also not sure how the Olympic commitment plays into the timing, but I sure wish they'd call him up. I won't criticize them, if they don't right away.

This could be a sign of a rotation turn-around:

Most recent start(s)

IP H ER BB K

Pivetta

6.2 0 0 2 8

5.0 6 3 3 6 (3 HRs in the 5th)

ERod

6.0 7 3 1 7 (2 runs on infield hits)

Nate

last 2 starts combined

10.2 10 3 2 8 (2.53 ERA)

3 starts before June 9th implosion:

16.2 17 3 3 18 (1.62 ERA)

(3.00 ERA in his last 6 games.)

Martin Perez was at 3.09 on June 7th. He had 2 bad starts, then...

5.0 3 1 2 3

Richards: forget about it.

Get ready, we’re about ONE week away from Duran being called up.

Some have been "ready" since opening day.

Why one week and not tomorrow?

I've been wrong on a few roster move ideas, like...

Sending Dalbec down right before he got hot.

Sending Taylor down.

Calling up Santana.

So, here I go... (moves to be made, soon, or when players are healthy)

DFA Santana

Add Duran 40 and promote him to CF/leadoff

DFA Andriese

Add Kaleb Ort and promote him to Boston

Put Richards on the IL (phantom or otherwise)

Call up who ever is healthy and ready from this list (in order)

1. Houck

2. Valdez

3. Bazardo

4. Gonsalves

When Arroyo is ready, demote Chavis

When Plawecki is ready, demote Wong

When Brasier is ready, DFA Workman or demote Rios (see below)

When Sale is ready, demote Rios or DFA Workman

I would do the following NOW:

1. DFA Santana, add Duran to the 40-man and promote him to CF/leadoff.

2. DFA Workman, add K.Ort to the 40-man and promote him.

3. Send G.Richards to the bullpen. When Richards' spot comes up in the rotation, promote Houck (who replaces Richards in the rotation), and DFA Andriese (opening a spot on the 40 man roster).

4. Begin trade talks for a starting 1b. Dalbec is not the answer. In fact, I'm starting to think that 1b is the Red Sox biggest need going into the trade deadline. With Houck, Sale, Braiser, and a potential contributor in Olt the Red Sox might have all the pitching reinforcements they need, but they don't have a major league starting first baseman on the roster or at the Triple A level. The Royals C.Santana would definitely be an ideal trade acquisition.

I'm with you on all the moves. Need to platoon for Dalbec. Would it be Marwin?

Marwin sucks at hitting. If we call Duran up, Kike can play 1B

If you bring Duran up now I think you plug him in LF.

The thing about 1B is you have so many options in the pipeline. Bogaerts may move to 3B pushing Devers to 1B. We have one of the best prospects in baseball in Casas who looks like he could be MLB ready by this time next year.

With so many other questions looming over this roster I’m not sure we want to spend assets on 1B unless the right deal itself, I’m not investing top prospects in a premium player at first.

A position he's never played?

I think he plays CF and Kike platoons with Dalbec at 1B and plays some 2B until Arroyo returns.

The Red Sox lead the majors in errors. In a scoreless game with a runner on second in the 7th inning they pinch-hit a guy batting .194. It's time to make some moves or wait until next year.

Since I believe Bloom will trade Barnes in the next month, here's one way to shore up the D, fill two glaring holes, and lengthen the batting order: Barnes, ERod and Downs to KC for Carlos Santana, Whit Merrifield and Michael Taylor. Boston would instantly have three reliable big leaguers at three positions where they currently don't: 1B, 2B and CF.

A club like KC may not be able to sign both Barnes and Rodriguez, but maybe they like Downs' future (p.s.: this deal was an exact match on baseballtradevalues' simulator).

If we add a 1Bman, it will e a cheap 2 month rental. (Moreland type)

Why does KC want high priced rentals?

Downs, yes.

Maybe a three-way trade.

Yup, just throwing it out there. I'd bet the front office will be huddling together looking at many options in the next month. I know some posters want internal moves, but I just can't see Bloom letting Barnes and ERod walk for nothing if he's not prepared to sign either to longterm deals at market value -- which he has not done with one single player yet since he took over.

Man, I can't wait to see the reaction of Red Sox Nation and media if he trades Barnes at the deadline.

It's true that it would kind of suck to let him go for nothing. But not as much as throwing in the towel on a season.

Unless we flounder bigly between now and then (which is certainly possible), it would be a stunning decision.

I'm not sure how many teams want ERod, as of now.

Trading Barnes is certainly something they must be thinking about. Ottavino, too.

This isn't Tampa, anymore, but I'm sure Bloom still sees the value of such moves.

I'm not sure the fans would.

When we were talking about this before, I think we figured out that the only time in history a team in contention at the deadline traded a significant player was when the Rays traded Kazmir.

That was the only one we thought of. I also remembered the Sox trading David Wells, when many felt we still had a shot.
