Meanwhile in Portland

Frank German came out of the bullpen for the first time this season, tossing three innings of one-run ball. He struck out four and did not walk a batter as his ERA stayed at an even 3.00 in June.

German was part of why we paid Ottavino's salary for 2021. His ERA was 8.47 in 5 starts in May. He had started 8 games before his recent relief stint.

Hopefully Bloom knows more about pitching than Ben does.

Ben: walks to get the boss a coffee, the first barista who gets the order correct gets drafted #7

Watched Leiter pitch for Vanderbilt today. We need to draft this kid in the first round! I hope he is still on the board when we draft.

I'd be thrilled to get him, but I like Davis, too.

Rocker would be sweet, too.

Slim picking on catcher free agency. Odd thing about catching position is that there are many, old guys still in the league and excelling. Vaz is relatively 'young' for a catcher at 31.

I wonder how long it would take for Davis to be major league ready.

AL East

3-0 Rays

3-0 Yankees

5-4 Toronto

6-3 Orioles

17-7 combined.....we're +10 in AL East and +4 against all others.

Watched the umps patting down DeGrom before the Met's game yesterday. I only hope they felt as stupid as they looked. An absolute travesty . Even DeGrom had to laugh .

Plawecki to go on IL.

Promote Wong?

Promote Hermann and DFA Santana or Rios?

@ChrisCotillo

I guess they aren't ready to DFA Santana, or just didn't want to use a newly created slot for a catcher.

I would think Herrmann would have been a better choice. (Bandy, too.)

They probably plan on Vaz going most of the way. Maybe they know more about Wong than the boxscore shows?

Vaz is already second in MLB in catcher innings.

It's interesting that it wasn't until very recently that Vaz caught his 500th game for the Red Sox. Tony Pena reached that amount in just 4 years with the Sox. Vaz first debuted in 2014.

@SPChrisHatfield

As

@IanCundall

and I discussed on the podcast episode dropping today, Wong was a better option that Herrmann because he's on the 40-man roster.

Wong missed 3 weeks with a hamstring injury, but that included time on the MLB taxi squad. Clearly comfortable w/ what they saw then.

Honorable Mention: Franchy Cordero (Worcester) per Overthemonster

If you’re looking just strictly at the stat line, Cordero certainly had a case to be in the spot held down by Duran. The outfielder hit .375/.565/.625 in the six-game stretch, walking a whopping seven times while striking out only thrice. Like I said, the heroics for Duran pushed him over the top for me, but Cordero may get the last laugh as he seems like a much more likely call-up. The outfielder has been tearing it up for Worcester since being demoted, the Red Sox are getting nothing from Danny Santana, and they need a lefty, at least for the bench. I would be mildly surprised if Cordero isn’t up within the week.

I would like to see him again.

Santana leading off....just wonder what goes through Cora's head when he makes up his lineup.

Does he fill out 2-5 first, then 6-9, checks to see what position is not covered, picks a player and puts him as the leadoff batter?

Santana is 4-36 with 4 singles in June. The guy with power and speed has 0 HR and 0 SB. He's been on base 7 times so maybe he's running the bases well.

Please bring back Cordero.

They've been using Kike, Arroyo, Marwin or Santana at leadoff depending on handedness of starter and matchups.

Obviously the results have not been great, but that's what they've been doing.

Put it in Perspective...

There's a chance we'd win the Division and be seeded #3. Likely opponent would be the White Sox, with Houston being seeded #1.

Soxes have one thing in common in that both rotations have been very healthy. Both teams have gone basically with 5 starters.

(sorted by games started)

Red Sox

ERA--WHIP

3.90-1.27 Eovaldi

4.32-1.40 Perez

4.36-1.35 Pivetta

4.36-1.61 Richards

6.21-1.47 E Rod

White Sox

ERA--WHIP

3.98-1.34 Keuchel

3.99-1.30 Cease

3.86-1.10 Giolito

2.14-1.00 Lynn

1.83-0.84 Rodon

Sale and Houck should be in play to start for us. We just don't measure up what with recent downward trending. We have scored 60 more runs than the White Sox in 72 games so we have that going for us.

It makes sense not to make a 40 man roster move over a back-up catcher.

Is Plawecki only expected to miss 10 days?

I know this thread is about 2021, but if Sale and Whitlock show they can be solid starters in 2022, maybe we can do this...

Extend Barnes

Sign a RP'er like Ottavino or Hand

Sign Kris Bryant

Move Devers to 1B

Keep Dalbec as a possible future DH, 1B, 3B sub.

1. Verdugo LF/CF

2. Bryant 3B/LF

3. JD DH

4. Bogey SS

5. Devers 1B

6. Renfroe RF

7. Duran CF/Dalbec LF/1B/3B

8. Vaz

9. Hernandez CF/2B/Arroyo 2B/Cordero LF/Dalbec

Is Cordero a leadoff hitter? That is what the Sox could use and yes they need another left handed bat. I think Duran goes to the Olympics and Cordero comes up.

We're 18-8 vs AL East. We win the division if we keep that up.

Sox now 15 games above .500 for third time this year. Let's get to 16.

Rays 2 games behind in the loss column.

Life is good. Even Santana got a hit today.
