If nothing's happening and you're on a forum called talksox, what else are you supposed to do:

1. try to initiate sox talk

2. complain about or disparage posters who try to initiate sox talk you disagree with

3. wax nostalgic

4. get pissy and threaten to leave forever

The circle of life.

The Sox aren’t a “total yawn” as you’ve got no idea what team will take the field. If Bauer is in Sox red, ERod is back and the Sox sign a couple back end relievers, then you’re gonna be eating your words

For the record, getting Bauer without having to give him a 7 year deal, would not, um, upset me. ;)

The 1978 team was the most star-studded Red Sox team of 'em all, I think (sigh).

That was such an enjoyable summer for me.

I appreciate the Ghost's spontaneity. His passionate posts are more fun than those whose only positives are how positive they are that only they know what's best.

Ouch.

Are there only stars and jabronis in your books, Denny?

In between the stars and jabronis, you have the ham and eggers. And there are different degrees of each category.

The 1980 team actually had more Hall of Famers. The '78 Sox had Yaz, Eck, Rice and Fisk. But in 1980, they added Tony Perez to that same foursome...

In '78 the Yankees and Red Sox were the two best teams in baseball. If they had a wild card back then, and best-of-seven playoffs, they would've had some wild ALCS...

...assuming Boston got by the KC Royals; those 70s Sox were terrible turf teams.

What???

No full blown, long term rebuild?

We don't agree on very much in terms of baseball, but you do crack me up. That's a good thing. :)

Those Royal teams were flat out nasty. Against the Sox, Dennis Leonard and Paul Splitorff always looked like Cy Young candidates.

But I liked thoseRoyals for two reasons.

1. They were usually the last AL team standing vs the Yankees, so I was obviously rooting for them. And

2. Their shortstop was the diminutive Freddie Patek (actual height: 43 centimeters), and as one who has always lacked for height, he was a bit of an inspiration to me...

And they called him The Flea (averaged 40+ SBs per year '71-78). I vaguely remembered this... it was the '80s:

Which was the year they were essentially a .500 team, then came out of the All-Star break and remarkably won 20 straight?

I think you are thinking of the 1988 team with Morgan Magic...

No mention of Adam Kennedy?

The guy hit 7 HRs in 2002 and then hit 3 in one game in the ALCS...

Or how about Marcus Lynn Betts? That player who will never be worth a longterm contract because he's so short; you know, the guy who already has the most three-homer games in history and is just entering his prime...

They offered him longterm contracts on more than one occasion, actually. But they balked at a paltry $400 million - the nerve of the cheapskates.

Have become the last thing on anyone’s mind in sports .I don’t think I can get up to watch another brutal paint dry season Jake Ordirizzi ? Hill ? Are you f***ing kidding me ? This GM is a terrible fit here .Next World Series title under Chaim Bloom is NEVER .

The team has won 4 World Series in 16 years. That is one every 4 years. In my eyes that is a pretty damn successful team. That’s the problem these days, as soon as a popular team has a down year or two or three..... people want to hop off.... think about people who cheer for the Mariners......

I’m looking forward to the upcoming Sox season.... as I always am. I don’t post much in the off-season as I watch the colts and am following them (9-4 baby). I will be there rain or shine for the Red Sox when they play game 1. I always am and always will be even if they finish dead last. That is what a fan is.

The tangent of notin's post was physical size. I wasn't referring to the organization at all, just the pundits who told us all last winter how much physical size matters when considering the size of baseball contracts.

Well I think that Betts' proficiency with 3 home run games hardly makes any of his unlikely...

... except the first one; he's only five feet, nine inches tall and weighs less than a bowling ball!

Only 5'9"??!

At that height, he would be the center on the All-Patek team!!

Any pundit who said Betts's physical size was a factor would be an idiot, of course.

I don't think anyone is gushing these days about how great Judge and Stanton will be in 6-7 years.

Do big heavy muscled guys have better longevity in baseball? I don’t think so.

At what age did Big Hurt stop playing D? Probably 10 years before he retired. I saw him up close when he was with the A’s. The guy is huge. You could hang two billboards on his back. He made Papi look small.

I don't think they have better longevity, but I'm not sure if it is worse.

1998, which was about 8 years too late for the switch. (Chi Sox were rotating through Bell, Franco and Kruk at DH during the mid 90's until Thomas was moved there after the baseball strike)
