Perhaps it's time to find a more exciting team to follow.

Or not.

Stars generate interest. Everybody in town knew the day of the week Pedro was pitching. It was an event. Sale had that. Mookie has star power. This roster doesn’t have anything close to that.

We don’t have Sale anymore?

hmm What day of the week going in to next season do you anticipate him pitching?

Thursday. I could never get the hang of Thursdays...

Of course stars don’t always translate to winning. The Red Sox trotted Hall of Famers out into left field to stand in front of the Monster for 50 consecutive seasons and gathered exactly 0 rings during that time...

Winning generates interest. It the team is winning, fans will watch whether the team has any superstars on it or not.

Superstars will typically sell tickets. This is a problem that we had with Lucchino. He wanted those shiny new toys that would put fans in the seats. While superstars may or may not translate to winning, the philosophy of signing players to draw fan interest is not a very good practice, IMO.

Guys, why do we still respond to his spam? Just ignore him and he'll go away

I don't think he'll go away. He has an uncontrollable urge to start a thread every time a thought pops into his head.

Bored. Other discussion topics related to baseball are lacking.

I could start a thread about my disappointment in missing out on David Dahl for$3mill...

There's been some on and off talk for awhile about starting an announcers thread. Is that something people would be into?

Springer should be the guy the team opens the wallet for and then let’s talk About players who should retire Rich Hill.Boston sports has lost Tom Brady and Mookie Betts can we all agree that we need to make a splash with George Springer ? If you don’t agree ? You are wrong but I won’t tear you down for it .Boston is not the Rays we are not Seattle we are not some small budget fans or team .I spend thousands on tickets on gifts for Christmas supporting this team .I understand we have won world series and divisions .I just want a watchable product ! Can we please stop acting like Boston isn’t starving for a huge star player accusition ? I hope you don’t think I come here to Troll I don’t .I never attack anyone who attacks me here .I have in the past though and can dish it as well .I just choose to ignore as you can . The thing is, if you make a big splash for Springer, it won't leave enough money for pitching.

And this team has made plenty of splash signings over the last 15 years or so, and most of them have been major busts. Why should Henry want to do it all over again?

Big splashes lead to ticket sales (normally) and higher TV ratings...

2004 Chock Full of stars: Pedro, Schilling, Manny, Papi

2007 Chock Full of stars: Schilling, Beckett, Pedroia, Manny, Papi

2013 Stars: Papi, Pedroia, Lester, Ellsbury

2018 Chock Full of Stars: Sale, Price, J.D. Martinez, Betts, Kimbrel, Bogaerts

A single star in LF may not bring a championship, but you need stars to win a championship, and no stars equals no excitement.

I doubt we make a big splash signing, but a big splash trade could be possible.

Any thoughts of a big splash signing would have to be for a SP'er, and Bauer is the only guy.

Does anyone watch the Tampa Rays? Plus, it is pretty hard to win without star players. Very very hard.

A last place team will never be exciting to watch, but certainly the owners have enough resources to field a competitive .500 team while rebuilding with enough talent to keep viewers interested. They are a zero in the pitching department right now— minor league quality. The few star hitters that we have can’t clime out of the holes that the pitchers dig for them.

True.

Many of those stars, along with others, were on our last place teams, too.

Despite its current small budget, Seattle historically has not been a small-market team.

As recently as 2018 the Mariners had a Top 10 payroll and again this year Seattle did not qualify for a competitive balance draft pick for small-market and low-revenue teams.

The Mariners probably are not looking to merely slash payroll but the rebuild necessarily involves the acquisition of young players with lower pre-arbitration salaries. Just as the Astros did in the past decade, the M's are saving money to spend later when the rebuild approaches fruition:

Seattle does not want to be the worker who lives paycheck-to-paycheck without saving for the future.

You could argue that 2011 might have been our most "star-studded" year

But the point is -- in all of those years we still watched and rooted and even attended. Last year's team was often unwatchable to a lot of fans by mid-summer (basically when it began). Even Cora said he turned off games before the last outs.

The Sox still had stars, but most were no-shows -- with injuries, illness or brutal off-years. Many may rebound, but an injection of new blood (and not geriatric blood) could be as potent as a second dose of the vaccine.

Many of our stars were on the IL, but we still had a lot of stars on the roster. Many just did not play like one.

Players are considered " stars " for a reason. It is because they are very good. You are more likely to win and generate fan interest when you have very good players. It is much more difficult to do that with a bunch of jabronis. That should not really be arguable . Obviously , you do have to pay the stars more than you have to pay the jabronis. That's life.
