That's what I think, too.

I was kind of shocked we paid him that much, despite still being able to re-set.

I'm sure Boras is part of the issue, too.

Scott Boras is always part of the issue.

The market paid what the market would pay.

He’s an older player that wanted longer term stability. If he was willing to sign a 1 yr deal, you’d probably take it and deal him off. You’re not winning anything this year, so it behooves you to kick the tires on reclamation projects like Cordero and Renfroe more than getting a .250 hitting CF with declining speed

JBJ won't be playing CF for the Brewers either.

@Haudricourt

Craig Counsell: "Lorenzo Cain is our centerfielder." And he left it at that.

I don't think it was too much money for JBJ. He has earned it. And Boras is the king of agents. Now the Sox have rid themselves of their entire championship outfield. Wonderful. Just wonderful. Let's just hope the new group produces the way we have come to expect.

My sig. pays tribute to Sox 1975 outfield squad. But for three years at least, 2016-18, the Thriller Bs comprised the best defensive outfield any Red Sox fan alive has ever seen. There was certainly none better. The only trio close was when Yaz, Lynn and Evans aligned together; legends all, albeit with mostly inferior dWAR...

Hey let's not forget about Lewis-Speaker-Hooper...

I wasn't alive then so I can't remember them... but I heard they could go get 'em, when the ball was a rolled-up, pair of socks, soaked in tabacky juice (yuk-yuck).

I know, I know: context. Ask Ottavino about whiffing The Whammer.

Oh nonne of us saw them. Not even bosoxmal. But 2 of them are Hall of Famers. Can any other Sox outfield make that claim?

Nope, but I did say "no Red Sox fan alive" has seen any better than the Bs...

JBJ finally traded. Now, if we can just get rid of Boggaerts and Devers, maybe dump Sale and Eovaldi, we'll have close to the team Bloom dreamed of having in Tamps. We also won't be troubled by having any fans in the ballpark.

The survey should now offer these choices:

A. Kiki

B. Cordero

C. Verdugo (meaning Renfroe plays RF)

D. Duran

It should be Kiké, but I have a suspicion it'll be Verdugo.

Yup, for most games.

If Cordero can stay healthy and do well, he could be "the man."

I didn't think of Cordero there, but I suppose he is an option.

I wanted to say the outfield that had both Ted Williams and Willie Mays, except the racist scout the Red Sox asked to check out the teenage Mays refused to go... so the Giants signed him, instead.

Duran had a HR and double in three trips. The kid is helping his cause.

Probably needs to start in AAA, but that season doesn't begin until May. If he's hitting well, may as well give him a shot.

Would love to see Duran hit about .800 with 10 bombs in Florida: Cora and Red Sox Nation salivating with hope, writers campaigning for Verdugo to stay in right where he belongs... and then see if Bloom tries to sell sending him to Worcester "just for a month, to work on getting better routes in center" (or something like that).

AAA not starting until may really changes the choice process.

Sure, players will still be working out, but not letting Duran and others see live action for a month, is a big factor.

(x) doubt

As Mays recounts in the book, when he was a teenager playing for the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues, the Red Sox had a minor league team that shared a field with them. Multiple teams scouted Mays, including the Red Sox, and former Sox scout George Digby actually had a deal in place to purchase Mays’ contract for $4500 in 1950 before it was scuttled by the front office.

“I had Willie Mays bought for $4500,” Digby told me when I interviewed him in 2005. “I called up the Red Sox. I said, ‘I got Willie Mays. He’ll break the color line.'”

“The owner of the Black Barons had told us we could have Mays for $4500. I said, ‘I’ll be back to you by tomorrow.’ Glennon had asked me, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘I think he’s a big leaguer.’ We could have had Mays in center and [Ted] Williams in left.”

Instead, as Digby recounted, Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey and General Manager Joe Cronin passed on Mays, saying they “already had made up their minds they weren’t going to take any black players.” Indeed, the Red Sox had years earlier passed on signing Jackie Robinson, with then General Manager Eddie Collins and Yawkey passing for the same shameful reason.

Thanks for clearing that up (I had read there was one scout involved, too). So if it was the owner and GM who were racists -- and they already changed the name of one street -- shouldn't they un-retire Number 4?

Tom Yawkey's racism was well known. The Red Sox to their disgrace were the last MLB team to integrate. This undoubtedly helped explain why the team declined so much during the 1950s

Good point. It's also worth noting they couldn't win the pennant again until '67, when they had Scott at first, Foy at third, Smith in center, Howard at catcher, Santiago in the rotation, and Wyatt in the bullpen.

Well, this end the debate.

To me, the fact that he got that much, makes it easier to accept his loss.

Not to me. I don't like or dislike players depending on their salaries.

Who said anything about not liking JBJ?

We have a budget. You can wish we don't.

You can argue We should have signed JBJ over Richards.

Yes, but it's not like the racism ended in the late 60's. (See the Tommy Harper incidents.)

i'm wondering if there were any other racist owners living during that time?

it has been very frustrating for me to watch the dismantling of this team in general for sure although I do understand a couple of the moves. Benintenid's glove in my estimation had nothing to do with why we might have kept him. he was decent but I think that it was about his bat not his glove. Although i will forever be a JBJ fan, I don't think that paying him 12 million per made any sense at all but I am glad that he did not suffer a cut in pay. Losing Betts is pathetic in my estimation. Now, if Duran continues to look like he has looked which is better than just about everybody else going forward, I would put him in center field and enjoy the show.
