Was it a favor to Jackie Bradley Jr. to be stuck on a team out of the race with a 12-22 record?

Fair question.

Let me answer this way: I don't see how the Red Sox did themselves any favors by not trading him. As I said, only Bloom knows the reasons.

It's not a fair question.

Might as well ask, would it have been a favor to trade Jackie to another city farther away from his wife and 4 year old daughter?

Teams do not owe it to players to trade them when the team struggles. JBJ knew what he was signing up for, and he signed anyway...

The question is more why wouldn't the Red Sox trade him for whatever they could get?

History has shown that position players are in less demand at the deadline than pitching, which seems obvious. Teams need only one CF or one SS, but they need an entire pitching staff so it gets easier to upgrade.

Maybe no one wanted a starting CF at the deadline. (Colorado was clearly OK with getting a backup OF.) The Sox were selling just about anyone, and while they did move Moreland and Pillar, they also dealt several pitchers (Hembreee, Workman. Osich)...

If you count each pitching slot on the roster as a separate position one would expect about an even number of pitchers and non-pitchers being traded at any given time, since about half of everyon'es 26 man roster are pitchers.

Does anyone have a breakdown of the percent traded for each group?

(I would expect more than 50% of players traded were pitchers, but maybe not by a lot.)

Or it could have been that JBJ was simply not that attractive a player to other teams because Boston thought more of him than the rest of baseball and wanted more in return than other clubs were willing to pay.

Are you trying to say that JBJ who has yet to sniff a contract this offseason wasn't a hot commodity at the deadline last year? Inconceivable!

Even if not a hot commodity, you'd think they could get something.

We got Potts and Rosario for Moreland.

Pivetta and Seabold for Workman and Hembree.

You'd think JBJ plus a lil cash might have gotten us something in between those packages.

Moreland is currently under contract. JBJ is still unsigned. Maybe Moreland has more value than JBJ?

Moreland doesn't more straight value. He has a lower price.

Moreland was pretty hot, last year, when we traded him, but JBJ was doing well, too.

I think JBJ had more value, especially if we made up the difference in sending some cash with him.

I think JBJ will get more than Moreland got, this winter, too.

The "with cash" part makes it a tough comp. Maybe the Sox did not want to include cash.

Do you think Pillar had more value than JBJ, if we paid enough cash to even out the cost to the other team?

Now, we only got Jacob Wallace for Pillar, but you get my point, right?

What's JBJ's current offer?

Reportedly he's got more than one offer in hand.

I will predict he signs for a higher AAV than Mitch.

Good point (often overlooked by armchair baseball executives).

Jackie Bradley Jr., apparently posted last week from Naples, Florida, 35 miles south of Fenway South Park in Fort Myers:

FWIW

Bradley's agent, Scott Boras, also represents J.D. Martinez, who three years ago signed with the Red Sox on February 26. Martinez reportedly remains in contact with Bradley:

Naples is also just a drive away from the Phillies, Mets and Astros who have also been linked to JBJ.

Clearwater, Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach are each at least two-and-a-hours from Naples.

But they're in the same time zone.:)

Is that not driving distance?

Is he commuting from Naples currently?

According to public records, Jackie Bradley Jr. and his wife have owned a home in Naples since November 2014.

That may not answer your question.

It doesn't. You originally noted that he was posting from Naples and that it was close to Ft Myers. It's relation to Ft Myers is only important because that's where he used to play in the winter from 2014 - 2020. The fact that he's there now has no bearing on his interest in signing with the Sox. If he wanted to sign elsewhere, there are a few teams also currently in FL that showed interest. Maybe he's down there in hopes of latching on with another team? Maybe he's down there just to get away from the winter? I don't think it's any indication of his willingness to play for the Sox.

So if oft-injured Franchy Cordero is actually injured to start the season, who are the candidates to replace him?

If he is the LF, is Marwin Gonzalez the likely replacement? But what if he is in CF?

The 40 man roster has only two other outfielders on it - Marcus Wilson and Jeisson Rosario. Rosario has never played above A ball and Wilson is not all that impressive, but is at leat close to MLB.

Duran? But someone has to go to get him on the 40 man. Chavis? Is he really considered OF depth?

The obvious choice is EHern with Arroyo, Chavis & Gonzalez splitting time at 2B.
