Sad but not surprising. I was 8 his rookie year, so I've idolized him for most of my childhood. He and Ortiz were the two Sox players that I was young enough not to remember a time without them, so thanks moon for the reminder that I'm getting old LOL

Just read that they put him on 40-man roster. Given that he's not going to play this year, nor is he going to give up the money they owe him, what's the purpose or what are the implications of this?

Right now they have to; everyone on the 60 day DL must go on the 40 man or be DFA'd. Thems the rules.

If he retires, they'll likely pay him whatever he's owed for this year (even if it's spread out over several years) and free up the spot.

It frees up a 40 man roster spot until Spring Training, meaning one less player gets DFA’d...

OK. Thanks. (And on Notin's remark above, does this mean that in order to get that spot open, they will have to DFA him in the spring?). I guess what I don't understand is why, if the Sox and DP agree that he can't play this year, but he will get paid, they don't just DFA/retire him now?

I don't understand any of it either LOL

I think they might be trying to work out the details of when and how he retires. Maybe some sort of financial agreement will be made, involving him staying in the organization in some capacity as a non player. There is no rush to do it, this second, but maybe by November 20th. If he is on the roster on NOV 21st, I'll be surprised.

We don't even have 40 men on the roster, right now, so Pedey is not taking anyone's slot.

Maybe they are trying to set up a deal where they have a day for him at Fenway, when there are fans in the park. Give him a nice sendoff. Something like that. Meanwhile , this is not causing any real roster issues.

You don't just kick off a guy that's meant so much to the organization.

It's about doing it the right way. Pedey knows what's coming. We're simply giving him a courtesy call and asking his permission to get him off the active roster (we don't need his permission obviously). Nothing more.

You do it out of respect.

Nothing, nothing changes in terms of financial liability to Pedey and there's no impact on luxury tax implications. We own it.

I don't like the way he was taken out of action. It wasn't clean. The guy who did it is an *******. I remember him trying to step on 1B's foot also intentionally. Dirty player.

He took away 4 years of playing career.

I've been saying this, all along. We have the weakest down roster in decades. Our bottom 15-20 can all be easily replaced. When we add the 6-7 rule 5 protected players and maybe 1-2 rule 5 draftees, we'll still have 5-10 players that have very little promise.

Now, do we keep Pedey on the roster, just so we can have some special Pedey day where maybe he gets one AB? I'm not sure having him on the roster makes the day anymore special.

I think he will be removed from the roster- most likely by November 20th. I don't think we lose anybody all that good, if we keep him around, but it makes little sense keeping a roster slot for him.

Exactly. It sounds like Pedey sees the writing on the wall and those talks will happen soon.

Thing is, you cannot lessen your tax burden by turning his contract into an org or coach contract. So this meeting is likely to set the press conference

The meeting could be about an organizational role for Pedey after retirement.

They don't want to push him out the door. They want him to make the decision and pick the day. It's PR.

Yes, it's Pedey Respect.

And at this point, they can't get him off the luxury tax calculation and the free agent market is colder than dog s***. No reason to rush this situation.

Not to mention, the uncertainty surrounding the 2021 season means this off-season could be less eventful than the last two...

It's going to be very slow moving IMO.

If we assume 150 FA's will sign over the next 90 days and each FA will sign a contract that's approximately 100 pages long (addendums and such), the MLB offseason will move about 152 ft/day, which is much slower than a sloth that can move at about 14,400 ft/day (astounding speed, really). Snails move at about 360 ft/day (ignoring sleep), still about 2x as fast as MLB. Now, even the fastest glacier moves at about 98 ft/day can't keep up with the speed of MLB paperwork. We can correctly ascertain that MLB moves at a pace greater than glacial speed, but slower than a snail's pace.

Probably time to do this deed--at some point.

While I agree Pedroia had more than his share of grit, he was actually a very good athlete and baseball player. Thus in 2007 when he first came up--to be the starting second baseman, no less--the FO was unconcerned when he couldn't hit for the first month or so. They knew he was going to be good, and he was that very year (ROY). Small body, big skills--and the attitude to go with the skills. Very competitive, maybe too much so. Remember the sign stealing caper he was part of? Or when he was taking grounders on his knees? You could not be a Sox fan and not be a huge Pedey fan.

That last injury to his knee, the one he never recovered from, was by his good buddy Machado, whom Pedroia defended after that play knocked him out of the game and the season and the rest of his career. Some buddy.
