Why not add Judge?

If they’re extending all those guys they probably still have JBJ too and the payroll is around 280-300 million. No pitching, weaker farm, better offense. I posted this yesterday, in this scenario they probably don’t sign Story and have Kike at 2nd

Or, Moncada at 2B

Well no, I think they still trade for Sale in this scenario. They were good and looking for that missing piece, Sox needed an ACE. I think if they were in extending all their guy's mode it makes trading away prospects easier.

You always make the trade when you can bring a true ace in.

You definitely do when the offense is set and you're "going for it"

So, Mayer for Lopez and berti?

If the Sox had signed Correa, I could see trading Mayer. But right now he’s the biggest glimmer of hope on the horizon and trading him to salvage 2023 right now seems unwise. Unless Romero turns into an equally impressive stud (which does seem possible with his impressive start).

Just upgrade the defense with players at SS and RF and recognize that 2023 rests largely on the shoulders and elbows of Sale and Paxton. If both are healthy, that is definitely a true upgrade to the rotation over the whopping 7 IP they combined for last year.

Of course, the chances both are healthy are very, very low…

Nope, Lopez is not a true ace. Put it this way, on bb-ref, his top three similar pitchers are Randy Wells, Steel Arm Tyler and Henderson Alvarez III.

I swear to Boggs, I didn't make that up.

2 years of a #2 for Mayer. No. Lopez isn't a guy that's going to lead a staff.

If you're trading for an ACE, you gotta bring back at least a guy similar to Manoah, Cease, Gallen... Lopez is much further down that list.

Holy hell that's good...

At this point, I'm not trading Mayer for anyone. It's not just because of his prospect status, but because of where the big league club is.

...and the gaping hole at SS, plus the fact that Story is likely much better at 2B.

Mayer is a guy that headlines a trade for a young star, who is either under team control or is committed to an extension. Like Juan Soto if he agrees to an extension, or someone like Sandy Alcantara. Pablo Lopez is good, but he’s not THAT good.

Neither of those are realistic options right now and the team sucks, so there is no reason to trade a top prospect

Would the Sox give Soto 400M?

Would the Sox give Soto 400M?

Depends on the M... if it's Martinis -- no. If it's Macaroni... that's about a box; I'd boil it for him personally (but the sauce would have to be jarred).

If it's Money... ponder this: Soto will be a free agent in 2025. Will Bloom still be boss of Boston then?

The list of players to give that contract begins and ends with Soto…

With the way the market has been this off season, it won’t be surprising if the numbers start approaching $400 million, especially with how young these stars are getting now.

Verdugo benched for being late, "character issues" go way back. This is from a LAD site in 2019-

"Of course, there have been intermittent reports of his lack of professionalism and poor attitude since his initial call to the bigs back in 2017. On occasion, he’s even been late, a circumstance the team believed it nipped in the bud two seasons ago.

If his professionalism is indeed bad enough to keep him relegated to the pine, one would think that the organization would have pulled the trigger on one of the many blockbuster trade opportunities the team was supposedly presented with over the past few years. When rival clubs engage in trade talks with the Dodgers, Verdugo’s name is normally one of the first to surface".

A month, or so ago on here when Dugy was going good someone asked Mookie who. Oh have the mighty has fallen.

No matter how certain fans try to defend it or slice it. Trading Mookie Betts was unfathomable at the time, and watching him go off for the Dodgers every night makes it worse.

The "Mookie who?" comment was clearly tongue and cheek, and you were told it was, at the time, yet you persist.

Perhaps the greatest Sox "what if" since trading the Babe to NYY>
