I'm not sure the trade is worse because of the DFA. We already knew Downs sucked.

Downs - bad

Wong - backup catcher at best no

Verdugo - turned into LF only defender with average bat

This is not an adequate haul for Betts even if you are getting salary relief.

They were never c going to get an adequate haul. How many superstar players traded in their final year got back a haul? I’m sure there are some, but not as many as you think…

Betts may be the best player of this generation not named Trout. Letting him go and not getting anything back substantial is embarrassing. Think of all the deadline deals where decent prospects are obtained.

Jeter Downs was DFA. This trade gets worse and worse…

1. Downs’ struggles in AAA the past two years already accomplished this

2. If you think a DFA makes the deal worse, bear in mind they very likely get to keep him. Getting Downs through waivers isn’t going to be a struggle. The struggle was watching him fall behind Hoy Park on the depth chart…

Most teams also don’t trade superstar players in their prime, and force a team to take on another massive contract while doing so.

There have been notable players traded for big hauls, with even less contract length than Betts. Mark Teixeira was traded for 5 prospects at the deadline and two of them were the Braves top prospects.

Go back one decade when we saw Miguel Cabrera traded for Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin. Certainly Miller eventually got good, but it didn’t help the Marlins. And Maybin had a long career as a borderline starter. Yippy. Detroit still has Cabrera.

It did suck, and I was the loudest of the Keep Brusdar bandwagon, but it’s not unique and it will happen again…

I mean I thought it sucked at the time too, but a lot of people thought getting Jeter added was a “big get”.

That is also the Marlins. They are a cheap team who trades away every star they ever have…

Fell behind? Park was DFA'd first.

And yes, any return for Devers will be underwhelming, but objectively better than a comp pick.

Humph... :(

I get it it sucks, prospects will break your heart. NO one can predict a human beings future with precision. Think how the White Sox felt trading away Sale for the #1 prospect in all of baseball? Bloom could have done better than Downs and that guy still could have bust.

To be fair, Verdugo was part of that trade too and he’s no slouch. Yes, he’s no Betts either but we traded away 1 year of control for 5 of him. There’s real value in that.

Don't forget our back-up catcher!

Had we pulled off the Kolten Wong trade, Bloom could have said, "Two Wongs make it all alright."

You think we would have learned our lesson in 2012 that prospects coming from the Dodgers will crash and burn.

That trade was a salary dump and not for some great hopes in DLR or Webster.

Correct. The Red Sox got something valuable from the 2012 trade despite not getting talent in return. However, some people had high hopes for those guys. I did not.

Maybe "hopes," but I don't recall them being all that high.

Maybe, BDC was less foolish than this site.

I remember seeing some people saying those guys had “high ceilings”, more so DLR than Webster, but I don’t remember anybody being too excited

I remember thinking, if we get anything from them, it's just icing on the cake.

I called that trade "a top 3 Sox trade in my lifetime."

It turned out we didn't spend the money as I wished and spread out the wealth. (Sound familiar?)

A ring came very soon, afterwards.

Optimism is part of being a fan. Some of us have it even though it gets repeatedly crushed LOL

I've been optimistic the last two seasons, but never felt like we were a top contender. I'm not in the "Playoff Crapshoot Club."

I lost my optimism earlier than just about anyone else, last year. Other year's I'm one of the last ones holding out hope. Not sure why it's worked out like that.

I thought we should have traded everyone, at the deadline, who was going to be a FA for the best we could get, even if it seemed unfair. I realized Bogey had a no trade clause, but if he saw everyone being traded and realize there would be no QO attached to him, after being traded, I think he'd have okay'd one.

We'd have reset, had some more prospects or useful players added to what we have, now.

if everything since 2019 had gone perfectly, this could have been the 2023 lineup:

1. Masataka

2. Betts

3. Devers

4. Bogaerts

5. Schwarber

6. Story

7. Renfroe

8. Vazquez

9. Benintendi

Why not add Judge?

Judge never was, or is on the Sox now. I’m taking a wild guess, but the rest were, or are on the Red Sox now. Easy peasy.

Wow, thanks for pointing that out!

Silly me!

Now if you would have said one of Bloom’s favorite players JBJ I could have understood that.
