MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Dodgers will not deal shortstop Gavin Lux (MLB's No. 2 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline) in a Betts trade package, but they are willing to include outfielder Alex Verdugo -- a former top 100 prospect himself.

With Mookie Betts entering the final year of his contract in 2020, the '18 American League Most Valuable Player Award winner will be the focus of plenty of trade talks this offseason. Below is a list of the latest news and rumors surrounding the 27-year-old outfielder.

I don't know how you don't make this trade if Verdugo is the centerpiece. He gone...

Verdugo's ceiling is higher than what Benny is right now. Benny is nowhere near his "ceiling" but it seems like he won't get there. The Reddick/Kalish comparisons are silly IMO. Neither were the prospect that Verdugo is right now.

You wouldn't be happy with a Reddick-type outfielder, a guy who can hit 30 HRs, win a Gold Glove, and break .800 OPS and 4 WAR a few times?

with the GOAT about to leave the Boston area perhaps trading away mookie will fly under the radar....

Right now the splits on the fates of Brady and Betts on Boston sports talk radio and TV is about 99% TB to 1% MB...

Below 100 OPS+ last two years

So you think he'd get a 1 year deal at that rate on the open market? I say no.

I say no too. But 11 mill is not a big overpay IMO.

I'm confused. The Dodgers are putting together a package for Betts. But how do they have time to deal for him, since they are busy planning their World Series parades for the past, what, three seasons? Then too, since obviously the only reason LAD didn't win the WS on tthe field, but only in tthe hearts and minds of good people all over the globe, was that Betts was being given the signs, why would they want such a mediocre player on their team?

Good point, Jad; you know the Dodgers will bench Mookie in the WS against a righty pitcher... just like in '18 when they benched their TOP 3 HR leaders -- Bellinger, Muncy and Joc -- vs. Boston lefties Sale, Price and ERod. Of course, that had nothing to do with Boston beating them.

Bellinger had a .681 OPS vs LHP that year. And Pederson had a .512 OPS vs LHP that year. Granted that was only in 87 plate appearances. I can see benching them. Heck they benched Pederson all year against LHP.

Muncy was .891. His benching made no sense..

Clay and Joc had slump-filled postseasons, but platooning might have something to do with that, not getting regular ABs vs. the MLB's top competition. However, if I was a Dodgers fan, I still would've been ripshit (if that's possible for mellow baseballers on the Pacific coast -- anyone with experience out there, please clue me in).

Imagine the uproar here on the Atlantic side if Boston benched its top three HR men: JD, Mookie and Bogey. If my TV didn't explode, I'd make sure to put it out of my misery with a 34" Old Hickory, thin handle, traditional knob, charcoal finish/ebony stain.

It would have been absurd to stop platooning Pederson for the playoffs after doing so for years.

Bellinger's platoon was questionable but not absurd.

Muncy's was strange, but we don't have all the information.'

By the way, did you know the Sox won a ring in 2013 while benching 2 of their top 4 OPS guys that season?

.959 Ortiz

.842 Napoli

.831 Nava (replaced by #9 Gomes .771)

.804 Salty (replaced by #16 Ross .681)

verdugo Benny JBJ is a pretty good outfield . But with Pedey out and a massive black hole at second I need Seagar in this deal 2 years to Evaluate and extend or Casas is waiting in the wings ? Why not move Xander or Seagar to second ? Devers,Xander Seagar,Chavis is a pretty dynamic infield also .May slots in as the closer Barnes and Workman slot back seems like a hell of a team.Price And Mookie in this deal .

It's a pipe dream.

We won't get 2 of these three, let alone all 3.

According to one source, Dustin May, Corey Seager and Alex Verdugo have surplus values of $55.4 million, $52.1 million and $50.1 million, respectively:

https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/teams/516/

... for a combined value of $157.6 million.

Mookie Betts has a surplus value of $50.7 million and David Price a negative value of $55.3 million:

... for a combined negative value of $4.6 million.

Do the math.

We might get Gonsolin, Stripling and Cartaya for Betts, but even that is an overpay by BTV. Gonsolin, Stripling and Wong might get it done.

If we add Price without taking back negative value (like Pollock and/or Kelly), we'd be lucky to get just one of Gonsolin or Stripling.

I'd be happy to get them to take Eovaldi.

Betts & Eovaldi for Pollock, Gonsolin, Stripling and Wong.

Baseball Trade Values approves a trade of Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts for Alex Verdugo, Corey Seager, Julio Urias and Austin Barnes (giving a slight edge to the Red Sox).

The Red Sox aren't going there.

If the Sox get Verdugo without sending any extra talent, that’s a steal. If the Sox get Verdugo plus then it’s a highway robbery

How's this (accepted by BTV)?

Betts & Workman

for

Verdugo, Kelly & Gonsolin

This was also accepted and rated as exactly even to both teams:

Betts & Workman

for

Ruiz, Gonsolin, Stripling, Taylor & Kelly

If the Dodgers are offering Verdugo, I go that route. He’s an OFer with pop who has always carried a solid BA through the minors. He turns 24 in May, so still very young. He’s got 5 years of control and just started showing power the last two seasons. He’s also a good OFer and will likely steal double digit bases on a yearly basis. He will never be Betts, but he has the ceiling of an all star caliber player. He put up 2.2 WAR last year in only 373 PAs. If the Dodgers are offering more than Verdugo, I’d try and get someone close to big league ready or insist on a big league ready starter like Stripling. But Verdugo is better than anything I thought the Sox would get back for one year of Betts at that price
Posted

I’d be surprised (and also thrilled) if Verdugo was part of this deal. Even more so than if Urias was.

If the Dodgers acquire Betts, where does he pla, with them having Betts, Pollock and Bellinger for OF.

My thoughts are Verdugo in CF. Bellinger to 1b. Muncy to 2b.

I doubt Verdugo is in play here...

Posted
Verdugo is good enough to be a one for one with Betts. Not that he’s better than Betts, but 5 years of Verdugo is worth more than one year of Betts, especially for a team looking like 2020 isn’t going to be their year
Posted
It is when he’d probably only get 5M on the open market.

Your point has validity.

I'm just assuming that Bloom was aware of all this too, and that he had his reasons for not doing the non-tender. Maybe it was because he was fairly sure he would be trading Betts, and he didn't want to also have to deal with the possibility of having to replace JBJ if another team signed him, so he wasn't concerned about a few extra mill.

That is what I have believed too. Otherwise, he just vastly misjudged the market.

Who knows? Maybe he believes he knows how to utilize JBJ better and make him worth it or just values his defense more than I do?
