JBJ is expendable now. The problem is that there is no interest from other teams.

And their best suitor just got Marte. This is a dumb move on Bloom's part. He never should have been tendered. Clearly he saw the market wasn't there. Why risk it? Or maybe his plan was that $1.1 mil wasn't a huge risk to see if the sox could move him prior to opening day. If you cut a tendered player in ST, you're only on the hook for 10% of the outlat

Could eat some of the contract and move him to PITT?

Agree with the tender issue. It's why I made that post way back when. Don't tender a guy to overpay him when you're trying to cut salary.

I think he overvalued him. JBJ's defense was merely average last year. His worth is tied to his occasional pop and his world class defense. If the defense slips, then his worth is gone

Should have non-tendered him, but re-signed him in FA for about 2/10M.

With how rough he was last year and with how the mediocre market has just tanked, they could have NT'd him then signed him for 1yr $4 mil-ish. NO need to guarantee the second year. If JBJ is fading defensively, then he is useless

Trading Betts would clear $27M, and if the Padres ate half of Myers' deal then the Sox would only be paying him about $10M, a net savings of about $14M (when you factor in the other players in the deal). I think they could still do it even with Moreland's potential $5M on the books.

The AAV on Myers contract is $13.8mill. He does have roughly $67mill remaining on the heavily backloaded contract. If the Padres paid half (~$33mill over 3 years), the Sox would only be responsible for $2.8 mill of that AAV, right?

But if they trade Mookie and get under the $208 mill, there's no big issue with keeping JBJ, is there?

That's how I view it.

I'd hate to see Myers in our OF. LF might be tolerable, but then moving Beni to CF would be cringeworthy.

Imagine an OF or Myers, Beni and JBJ in RF.

His 2020 projected fWAR is 2.1. One-year defensive ratings are known to be unreliable.

Relax.

Yes, and he's gone next year, so we'll have more money freed up to make a solid run for Betts.

No, but they could have used the $6M elsewhere. Brock Holt?

I bet he's back on a smaller deal. The Sox don't really have a CF replacement in the organization.

Personally I think Bloom knows what he's doing with this kind of stuff. He might rate JBJ higher than some of the posters here.

@redsoxstats

If Price is traded the Sox will obviously need to spend some money coming up, but I'd say the top priority would the window you just created to sign a Devers extension that gets his 2020 minimum salary included to lower his AAV long term.

But there are comparable guys still sitting unsigned in FA. It's clear to me that this seems to be an overpay.

I doubt in Fenway.

Benny has never played that side of the field before. I'd just leave him in LF. Myers would be underwhelming, but I'm not sure Benny would be any better.

FanGraphs and the trade simulator don't seem to think so.

I said Beni in CF, Myers in LF and JBJ in RF.

Bloom has to win any Betts trade or it's no deal.

We might as well shut down the simulator, because Bloom has to get a prospect haul; it's the first year of the most important job of his life, and this transaction could very well define his career going forward.

I read where someone said Verdugo for Betts is equal, because it's five years of Verdugo for one of Betts. It is unfathomable to me that any Red Sox fan truly believes that. One year living in the penthouse isn't the same as five in a treehouse -- even if the latter has the potential to have a roof installed, then shingled and insulated, and maybe even get electricity and plumbing some day.

I like Verdugo, but what is his ceiling? Is it even Benintendi (who was once the MLB's NUMBER ONE prospect)? I know Betts could become McCutcheon, but based on his consistent accomplishments he could also continue on his Mays-Aaron trajectory. With Verdguo, all we've got now is to hope he's Josh Reddick and hope he's not Ryan Kalish...

What if Chaim Bloom loses Mookie Betts to free agency after another postseason-less year? Would that define his career?

Verdugo's ceiling is higher than what Benny is right now. Benny is nowhere near his "ceiling" but it seems like he won't get there. The Reddick/Kalish comparisons are silly IMO. Neither were the prospect that Verdugo is right now.

FanGraphs projects 2.1 WAR, which would equate to a dollar value of about 17 million.

So you think he'd get a 1 year deal at that rate on the open market? I say no.

No, because that would mean Bloom's bosses wouldn't pay for the rest of Mookie's career. Bloom would be more remembered by Red Sox fans as the guy who kept the face of the franchise for as long as he could.
