That’s a start.

I don’t think the Angels will do that deal tho.

I’m sure Rico has a whole list of full time CFers that we can trade JBj + jarren + “other prospect” for?

Or maybe Rico would rather just keep ragging on JBJ.

We all know it's flawed, I think. What's your preferred stat for overall hitting production?

I never go for the one number quickie list. Don't care if it's OPS or WAR or any other single number, traditional or advanced. It is always an over simplification. Each hitter is unique and brings something different to the plate. I like to see if they are maximizing their particular skill set. For example, with JBJ and Moreland I focus on their extra base hitting. With Mookie and JD, I expect strong numbers in all categories.

With OPS, you are adding fractions with different denominators, PA's and AB's And all you are doing is adding together two traditional statistical calculations. On top of that, SLG is only a crude calculation of power hitting. So OPS is in no way an advanced or better metric than the very traditional numbers is is derived from.

If you focus on JBJ's extra base hits, you're missing the fact that he's second-best on the team, % wise, in getting on base without a hit, by BB and HBP.

OPS, while crude, doesn't miss that.

How exactly does OPS show anything that specific?

The Angels wouldn’t do that deal at gunpoint.

But maybe in the off-season the Sox can do something like a Duran/Dominic Smith trade to replace Moreland cheaply, assuming Duran is deemed a significant enough prospect and the Mets like him...

Interesting point on getting on base without a hit.

JBJ is actually 3rd, but when a guy is 9th in OBP, placing 3rd in this area is pretty telling. (1. His BA is so damn bad at .190 and 2.He gets hit by a pitch a lot. His BB rate is not all that much higher than most of the team.)

.163 Betts (45 BB+ 2 HBP/288 PAs)

.130 Beni (31+4/269)

.129 JBJ (22+5/209)

.121 Moreland (22+0/174)

.119 Bogey (32+0/270)

.117 Chavis (18+3/180)

.110 JDM (25+2/245)

.090 Devers (23+1/267

.058 Vaz (10+0/172)

BB%

15.6 Betts

12.1 Moreland

11.9 Bogey

11.5 Beni

10.5 JBJ

10.2 JD

10.0 Chavis

8.6 Devers

5.8 Vaz

2.7 Nunez

They need to make him a 4th Outfielder. You can't keep that bat in the order year in and year out. He is what he is at this point. He isn't going to discover a fix for stinking.

He's on his way towards another .700+ season and is one of our hottest hitters.

Wow! 700 OPS! Amazing!

Any outfielder, I don't care who it is. Hell, I could go out there and hit better than him.

.188 LOL

I’ll take that bet...

I said .700+, and for a GG CF'er, it's not bad.

I'm just wondering why people are all over one of our hottest hitters.

BTW, the way he's going, he'll end up over .800.

Jackie was at .350 on April 19th.

.399 on April 27th.

.444 on May 15th

.511 on May 23rd

.552 on May 27th

.600 on May 29th

.625 after game 1 today (June 8th)

.725 from April 20- June 7th (not counting today)

1.036 from May 20- June 7th (not counting today)

He sucked so badly before April 20th that his overall OPS still sucks, but I don't get why people are still bashing him.

Lets hope he doesn't slump badly over the next 10 days as we will face better pitching.

By including OBP?

But that doesn't tell me he is second best on the team getting on base without benefit of a hit, as you said he is. OBP includes hits. OPS does not tell me what his OBP or SLG pctg is by itself.

That depends on how much his fielding contributes toward winning games, at which he has excelled so far in his career.

No, but it includes BB & HBP.

Throughout the years, OFers like him have been relegated to the bench despite stellar gloves.

True, but not many were hitting over 1.000 over their most recent 18+ games or .800 over their last 35 games when they got benched.

I’m still waiting for someone to give a better option, that’s realistic than JBJ. JD should play OF as little as possible, so moving him there, especially with his injuries this year isn’t a realistic, or smart option. Who else would play out there? Holt so Nunez gets more AB at 2nd? Sam Travis? Pearce? Marco Hernandez? (Or Holt in OF and Hernandez at 2B). I just don’t see a better option.

Yes, and if any prospects are traded, it should be for a solid pen arm or better SP'er depth... not an OF'er.

I agree. JBJ has been turning it around, and is still a starting level OF. I’d bet he finishes season with a positive WAR again.

I think he's been plus since April 20th.
