He’s currently hot and his OPS is still below his usual. When he eventually cools off (you know he will), how far below .700 will he go?

Chances are very good he will finish the season above .700. It's what he does.

He'll end up closer to .800 than .700.

He's been hot for a month. Since May 27, he is hitting .317/.414/.623. That is a solid month of action. We have all seen this before. He won't hold this forever when he goes ice cold again

Yes, he has "gone cold again," but last year he got hot on the exact same day as this year (May 20th) and held onto a .793 for the last 106 games of the season. If you count his playoff numbers, he was over .800 for 5 1/2months. His highest OPS of 2018 was on the last day of the season (.717). He was at .614 on this date last year.

He's not always bad. He has long streaks of decent to great offense.

Since May 20th, this year, he's hit .301/.406/.628/1.034 in 134 PAs (not counting tonight's 0-4), which is nearly half is PAs on the season.

Back on May 10th I looked at how JBJ stacks up with the rest of the batters in the league, and basically found him 88/88 in most categories; i.e. the worst batter in the league. So now that it is June 5th, has he improved?

Batting average: 84/86

On-base percentage: 82/86

Slugging percentage: 83/86

OPS: 84/86

RBIs: tied for 121st.

So ... a couple guys dropped off, and he's ahead of Jeimer Candelario and Rougned Odor. Improvement? A smidgeon.

I'll check in again around the July 4th holiday.

I missed the July JBJ check-in (I was on holiday myself), but now that it's August I think it's time to see how Jackie's doing again.

Batting average (.226): 72/75 - Rougned Odor, despite having such an interesting name, is the league's worst hitter at .208

On-base percentage (.320): 52/75 - congratulations to Jackie! Here he's made some real strides. Rougned Odor is also the worst on-base player right now at .270

Slugging percentage (.394): 66/75 - Yolmer Sanchez of the White Sox has the dubious pleasure of being the league's worst slugger at .328

OPS (.714): 64/75 - Yolmer Sanchez "leads" this category as well at a measly .638

Home Runs (11): tied for 86th

RBIs (41): tied for 77th

Steals (7): tied for 35th

Walks (40): tied for 25th, Jackie's highest showing

So, he's clearly better than Yolmer Sanchez and Rougned Odor, but they do have the cool names advantage over him. Overall, I think he's plateaued for the season, but I hope I'm wrong.

I said it a while back we should've made a trade for Pillar/RP from the giants. I was told then I was crazy on this board. JBJ is not dominating CF like most think. His bat is a black hole in the lineup!

The OTHER JBJ, the one that trudges to the batters box and trudges back to the dugout is almost in full bloom AGAIN. He is what he is.

News flash: Pillar is an even worse hitter than JBJ.

News Flash: numbers don't lie so let me throw a few at you!

Pillar- .239 Avg, 98/H, 25/2B's, 13/HR, 57/RBI, .666/OPS, 52/R, 64/SO

JBJ- .226 Avg, 78/H, 21/2B's, 11/HR, 41/RBI, 714/OPS, 45/R, 104/SO

ohhh and not to mention JBJ is making 8.5 Mil compared to Pillar's 5.8 and JBJ will be up for another increase in Arb in 2020

if JBj limps the final 2 months i doubt he gets a arb raise.

And OPS is the most commonly accepted stat now for overall offensive production.

All that I am saying is that, we could've(should've) dangled him out there and tried to pull some RP out of SF and JBJ should've been the piece to make that happen. However, if's and butt's were candy and nuts we would all have a Merry Christmas

The problem with trading JBJ for a RP'er was at least two-fold.

Any team trading for JBJ would be a contender and not likely to give up a quality RP'er. (It would have taken a 3 way deal.)

We have no OF depth. Playing JD in the OF would be very risky. Playing Holt or Travis in the OF would be such a step down, the gain in the pen would not likely offset the loss in the OF. (Plus, who DHs with JD in the OF?)

Jackie has a seven year career . He has established what he can and cannot do . No surprises here . He is what he is . Take it or leave it . Right now , we do not have a better alternative, no matter how you slice it.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm a defensive guy to the bone and love great plays in the OF. However, it's not like JBJ is making the run saving play as often or even being the best to roam CF in MLB. His inconsistency is killing his spot in the lineup. Can a player be added to the 40 man this late in the season. The reason I ask that, we have Rusney getting paid more than most guys that are actually starting in the league. He seems to be putting up decent numbers and maybe his bat would be an upgrade. Hell, maybe bring up Duran and see how the show effects him and see if he has the potential to be the future in CF. I know all this may actually happen when the roster is expanded come September.

To be fair, Rusney Castillo is batting .290 at Pawtucket, they just don't want his salary added to the luxury cap.

Rusney is not an option due to the tax, and part of the idea of trading JBJ would be to save us money on the budget next season.

Maybe next year.

He might be making less than Bradley at that point...

Castillo's only added cost is the tax. 2020 could be his year!

Rusney Castillo, Panda Sandoval, Carl Crawford, Pearce, Nathan Eavoldi...albatross salaries

Pearce's is more like a pigeon compared to the others.

JBJR is the only guy on Earth who is too good defensively to leave off the field, and with Vasquez becoming a bonafide hitter with some power, JBJR's weak bat is acceptable. Leave him and that situation alone. The SP suck enough and would suck some more without him out there manning (not rick) CF.
