What you said was "any comparison with Freddie during his tenure in Boston makes me chuckle".

Good - I'm glad about the chuckle my friend! I am actually a fan of JBJ also but I couldn't keep my stripes from showing on this one though.

the "observer" looking at every play is kind of silly.

JBj is the best defensive CF in MLB right now.

JBj is easily the best defensive CF the Boston Red Sox have ever had.

just watch his first step on contact - on contact- every single play.

How old are you anyway Slasher?

Some of you youngins just don't get it. Put all your defensive metric material aside and go conjure up some vintage video of Lynn roaming cf for the Sox and then get back to me. Hey I bet you guys don't believe that Russell is the greatest bb who has ever played either! lol

Lucked into a few bad pitches. It actually says that right on the trophy. Says the same on Steve Pearce's WS MVP, in fact.

Hahahahaha!

I don't know. I was a great fan of his, but in all the games I saw, Wilt outplayed him. After all, in basketball and in life itself, 20,000 scores is hard to beat.

I defer to no one on complaining about JBJ, who I don't think is the best Sox CF ever or the best CF in the AL or MLB today. Plus his hitting is just miserable.

All that said, right now he's not a bad fit as the Sox starting CF because the three subs are Leon, Pearce, and Nunez, none of whom are hitting well. Plus JBJ in CF solidifies a pretty solid defensive outfield and lets JDM be the DH. Most times, Cora can go with 8 other guys over .800 OPS (Beni, Betts, JDM, Moreland, Bogie, Devers, Chavis, and Vazquez) in the lineup plus JBJ with his miserable .450 OPS.

When Holt gets back, maybe it's a different story, but right now I'm fine with JBJ in CF despite by attacking him continually on this very thread.

So which do you believe, do you believe that he was 1/3 of a win per year better than a replacement player, or that "he was damn good on defense"?

I don't mean to be a jerk about this but you can't have it both ways and I'm trying to make a point here.

I think Lynn was a great defender while with the Sox. maybe I was a little wrong, and he was just good. I don't think dWAR was as good then as it is now.

Also, dWAR and UZR/150 are not supposed to be used in small sample sizes, so I don't use them-- like with JBJ's 2019 numbers.

I'm not "having it both ways."

I would not say he "is" the best in MLB, but I will say he's the best Sox defensive CF'er I have seen (since 1970).

Could be right about Lynn. As for Bill Russell, I agree he was the greatest NBA title winner ever. He arrived in late 1956 after playing in the Melbourne Olympics and when the Celtics had Sharman and Cousy at the guards. Cousy had I believe been voted something like the best player of the first half of the 20th century, but couldn't win a title until Russell came along. When Cousy retired, he said he would not be missed as long as Russell stayed, and he was right. KC Jones stepped right in--not as good as Cousy, but good enough. And Sam Jones replaced Sharman--and so on. Russell was a great rebounder and defender and pretty effective on offense, but never as the primary scorer. Plus he was smart and very determined--and, for all we know, playing in front of racist fans (Russell says that) may have spurred him on. I could be wrong, but I believe that the Celtics never sold out the Garden during all those seasons Russell played. Not so the Bruins. Not so the Sox.

Russell also won 2 college championships along with the Gold Medal and NBA championships.

His picture is in the dictionary next to the word "winner."

I live in Chicago, where apparently basketball before Jordan was basically an Aur Bud movie, but without the skill. Any time anyone challenges Jordan as the best player all time with Kobe or LeBron, Chicago sports fans instinctively chant “SIX RINGS!!! SIX RINGS!” To which I respond “But Jordan played for 19 years and only got 6 rings. Bill Russell played for 13 years and won 11.”

oh but wait jad - We have been schooled and it has been spoken - greatness can only be measured by the number of rings on the fingers - Russel's run of championships puts this debate to rest.

i say this with a little facetious smile on my face for sure. Russell is the greatest champion in the game of basketball but in terms of him being the greatest player not even I am going that far. I really only am mentioning this to show how ridiculous i think that it is when someone tries to convince me of any player's or coach's talent and elevation being determined by championships won as a deciding criteria. There have been plenty of bad coaches who have been on title teams and there have been plenty of great coaches who never won one. Respectfully as always - i think that Alex Cora did a great job last year and he may someday be considered a great coach as for me the job Dick Williams did in '67 was part of a miracle.

Russel was my hero. Before Jordan, there was the "Doc" (Irving) and before him another great one in Connie Hawkins.

Hiensohn is another one who is rarely mentioned and he obviously was great along with Mr. Havlicek and I have to include Satch Sanders in this mix.

2 championships in NCAA (SF went 57-1 in his last 2 years there), a Gold Medal (championship) and 11 in 13 NBA years. That's 14 championships & Gold medals in 15 years!

That will never be repeated in any major team sport.

Plus high school state titles his last 2 years at that level. One of his high school teammates was Frank Robinson.

So, if you count those twice, he's got 16 championships in 15 years.

He's an automatic out at this point.

He's looked horrible for over 6 weeks.

I'm not sure how much longer Cora & Co. will give him.

Finally a homer but still just 1 for 5.

Whe I saw the lineup today with Pearce, JBJ and Leon as our 7th, 8th and 9th hitters, I thought it would be our top 6 to provide any offense and that is a lot to ask. It turned out that our bottom third contributed today so overall se scored 12 runs. Toronto's pitching isn't much, but a win is a win. Chavis cntinues to impress.

Interesting kid and potential low cost CF replacement in the fold. Still has a long way to rise, but this is what was said this past week.

Boston Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week.

The 22-year-old left-handed hitter went 12-for-27 with a homer, five doubles, eight RBIs and seven runs this past week.

Duran is batting .406 with a .462 on-base percentage, .555 slugging percentage, 1.017 OPS, two homers, 11 doubles, three triples and 16 RBIs in 38 games (173 plate appearances). He’s 13-for-18 in stolen base attempts.

He's too far away to think about, IMO.

could be time to see how he does in AA though?

Need about 200 AB's before they are moved up (reduces the SSS factor and allows clubs to see him for a second series). He's at 158 right now. I think a call up in early June makes sense.
