Ok so what is going on. If Hanley had the kind of value that some think that he has, why has he not signed some where with someone? if you could get him for next to nothing, why would you not take a chance with him. Unless of course there might be actual reasons that we don't know about as to why he has not already been signed.

Maybe he's too good a player to accept a bench role and wouldn't be happy.

Maybe harmony is right and teams are worried about that option. Could be language in that contract we don’t know about.

I really hope that you are right but I personally don't really believe that. My guess is that there was more to this than Hanley just not hitting. The Sox cut him loose and if people want to think that the only reason was the impending option, that is all good. If he signs soon with someone maybe it proves that point. On the other hand if he is not signed soon by someone, there really might be a little more to this story than his biggest supporters want to hear. Whatever, the Sox have cut him loose and it doesn't look like they are losing sleep over that decision.

One thing is positive, any team that signs him has no responsibilities or obligations under his Red Sox contract. That hasn't even been questioned by those who trolled the issue.

Maybe he is just doing a Papelbon. He has made a ton of money. He could just be going off into the sunset instead of uprooting his life once again.

I hope that that is the case.

Maybe he is in no rush to sign with the first options that have been presented to him? After all, he is still making all of his 22 mil this year weather he plays or not.

But if he plans to play MLB next year he better get back in the box soon and earn some interest by performing.

Otherwise he is AAA bound.

And I doubt that he loves the game enough to ride the bus again.

Teams are worried that he’s a negative WAR guy who won’t go to AAA.

No worry there- just cut his ass, if he sucks.

But he already sucks so why bother bringing him in at all?

Especially with teams falling out of Play-off contention. There is many of them. Might as well give the at bats to the kids, who are the future with Teams. Detroit is a good possibility, they are only 4.5 games out of first, still in it.

Detroit could just slide VMart to 1b and flex their DH spot.

Most contending AL teams are set at 1b/DH tho.

Maybe there is more to the story than the PAs for contract extension. Perhaps something was going on which the Sox believed would not make him close to a viable player either the rest of this year or the next. Not idea what that might be so it isn't worth speculating as to the nature of the issue, but it seems to be realistic to believe the Sox felt he was not going to be viable.

I think the Sox would have kept him a while longer at least if it wasn't for the vesting option, which proved to be a real albatross.

I think people are reading too much into this. It's only been roughly 2 weeks since Hanley became a free agent.

I heard that Hanley returned to the Dominican Republic, happy to take some time off. He does not appear to be in a rush to join another team just for the sake of joining another team. Maybe he doesn't want to play for a team like the Os?

Either way, I'm not buying the insinuation that Hanley has been a 'problem' and, therefore, teams don't want to sign him.

Of course they would have.

.. which is probably why Hanley is waiting for some key 1B or DH to get injured before signing anywhere...

How does the new team pay Hanley. If there's competition for him and say he gets 4 million, is that deducted from what we owe him this season? Or does he get both salaries? If the former, I can see why he would have little interest in signing with a new team.

It is intuitively obvious to even the most casual observer that Hanley is content to sit on his ass and collect his money. He will sit out the majority of the season, see if a contender wants him in late August, then enjoy the ride and publicity in a possible post season run to up his value for next year.

Hanley was released and no one really knows the entire story. I believe that there is more to it than the vesting option. That was certainly part of it but I'm thinking that the Sox are happy to be rid of him regardless of what the real reasons might be.

I am absolutely no Hanley fan. I hated the signing before it happened. But I must say that from what I understand, I don't blame him for not playing right now if he can only receive the pro-rated league minimum. That's like 275k so maybe the sunshine and beaches are preferable to a millionaire. But he'll sign on fairly soon just to set himself for next year's new contract... unless of course he's mulling over retirement.

He would only receive the pro-rated minimum from his new club; he still gets paid $22M for the 2018 season whether he plays or not. the Red Sox pay whatever difference there is.
