Another mediocre talent that Sox fans often falls in love with. Right now it's Holt. Just because you can play eight positions badly doesn't make you a super utility guy. And then he takes out Kelly by going up the 'middle'. If I buy the Sox, he'd be first to go along with anyone else that oppose me.

Mark me down as a Holt fan.

If Holt makes the team - and he probably will - I'll cheer for him to do well. But he really doesn't impress me much and I agree with Nick's assessment of his defense. ..

Your right. Value probably is low. Every time he throws it just doesn't seem like he has #1 or #2 stuff as they say.

I go back to 04 07 13. Dominate starting pitching. Pitchers who were work horses in Pedro Schill Beckett Lester Lackey. At the moment Boston does not have a horse. We all thought Sale was that guy and Price in 16 but all flamed out in the Post season...

Maybe Cora will work magic with the staff but I still say ERod is over valued...

It really doesn't matter if ERod is 'overrated'. What matters is he's a 25-year old starting pitcher who has shown promise and is under control for 4 more years on a team that is going to be losing a lot of players over the next few years. He's a valuable asset.

Not the way he played the last 2 years, and I'll excuse him for last year due to injury. For a utility player, he was awesome in 2014 and 2015, despite the defense.

He may not play any position that well, but his ability to play just about any position has value in and of itself. For a bench player, versatility counts.

Me too.

Although some of his value is now diminished compared to the days when he would play 7 positions. The Sox have decent to better reserve players to cover some of those positions.

Regardless, he probably makes my team now.

Well said, and he's got nasty stuff that projects to better than his numbers show.

I do not think he he over rated at all. He had bad luck with the knee the last couple seasons, but he has a plus fastball and changeup. Yes the curve could be tighter, but his stuff is good. He operates nicely in the lower part of the strike zone.

If he stays healthy, he will have a break out season. He is a number 2 in a rotation, but needs to stay healthy to prove it.

People in love with Holt probably was sad to see Buchholtz go. But, but, but it'd only cost us $12M. I'm glad you don't manage my money.

I wish I knew what this post means.

The Phillies paid his entire salary after the trade.

I'm glad you don't manage the truth squad.

I think he was saying that it would only cost $12M to keep him, not to let him go.

I'm thinking that JD's final decision to come to Boston was when Arizona decided to use soggy baseballs this year.

I thought about that too. It could really dampen the offensive numbers.

Oh, okay. That makes more sense.

I don't really recall too many upset Buch fans after finding out Philly took the whole contract.

Especially after he didn't make it past April.

I think he had some decent value in the pen at the end of 2016. I wouldn't want him on my roster though.

If he had been making $1M, I'd have not complained.

So the deal in its entirety is interesting.

First 3 years at $23.75 mil.

Last 2 yrs at $19.375 mil

Opt out after 2 seasons gives JD an extra $2.5 mil buyout. (Hence $50 mil over 2 seasons) Opt out after 3 seasons gives no other incentive.

So this is either....

A 2 yr $50 mil deal

A 3yr $71.75 mil deal or

A 5yrs $110 mil deal

I would have signed on for any of those 3 options.

Nonsense.

It can be a good deal or a bad deal.

You guys keep ignoring the possibility of him not performing well and deciding to stick around for 5 years.

Pete Abraham calls me a pessimist. Well, to only talk about the good that COULD come from this deal while ignoring the potential pratfalls of another big money long term contract is optimistic.

I am a realist.

Sounds good to me!

Ok I've been patient ....why no press conference yet WTH is taking so long ???? What a freaking train wreck...how freaking stupid not to fly him to Boston to begin with ...handled like absolute clowns .

There are risks to all big contracts.

As someone who reportedly works tirelessly at his craft he seems a reasonable bet to perform well for the life of the contract.

Take a deep breath.

Relax.

All is good.

Well the delay could be as innocent as they say. Just an unfortunate set of logistics. Most of the time these things take 2-3 days at least to do but that is in the off-season. No one cares or even notices. Now, because Spring Training has already started, people get all nervous because he is not on the field immediately after the signing.

Or it could be because they found something undesirable in his blood and they are contemplating what they should do next.

I kind of like the soap opera qualities of this whole JD affair. It's so Red Sox and so Boston media.

Yeah if what Price has said of him is true, JD certainly has worked at becoming a better batter. A Lot.

My guess is he has two-three good years with the Sox.

J D Martinez is still not an official member of the Red Sox. The possibility still exists that he may not be signed because of medical concerns. Or, maybe they're finding something that will lead them to try to alter his contract like they did with Napoli.

Well the medical staff is in Boston, and Martinez has had a couple of major injuries in the past ... and this is a lot of money. If anything, I'd think there might be some extra haggling on injury clauses and such. But I don't think this deal is getting derailed.

Especially not since his only other interested suitor has since added two outfielders....
