What would you propose to do with our lefthanders? Trade Price, Sale, Pom or E Rod? Just so you can have a balance?

You deal ERod who is injury prone and has shown no sign of being a dominate Starting pitcher. All the hype surrounds ERod because the Sox traded one of the best Relievers in the game to get him.

Cobb or Arrieta or perhaps a future trade to bring in a RH Starter..

Oh he has DEFINITELY shown signs of being a dominant starter (or at least an occasionally dominant starter). It's the injury thing that's the rub. That deal has always been a very good one.

Ha. I knew this was coming. I just didn't think it would be coming so soon. :)

Line up protection is largely a myth. If our underachievers have bounce back years, it will be due to the fact that they were likely to regress.

Having JD certainly lengthens the line up, which is how his presence will be felt.

It is simply what I heard coming out of the Red Sox camp this morning. I'm not trying to start a battle with you. You have a strong opinion about this - so do I. If it matters to the men playing the game, I'm going to buy it. I will always trend in that direction. You won't change my mind any more than I could change yours. When a pitcher says that when Papi was in the lineup, he started thinking about him when he was 3 hitters away, I'm just guessing that the boys hitting before him saw some good pitches to hit.

erod might be one of our best pitchers this year and his knee has been surgically repaired.we dont need to trade anyone we need to add a pitcher though.last year this group struggled from aug on.

Put it in the chart Jacko.

I wasn't afraid of the Yankees before we signed JD. I'm certainly not afraid of them now that we've signed him.

Lol.

Amen.

The forums aren't the real world, but i think he might have been booed a few times in 2009 before he started hitting HRs.

I am not sure what year it was but if 2009 was the year when he struggled he was booed. I remember being shocked by it.

Just because someone doe not remember it happening does not mean that it did not happen.

Price had an arm injury last season, correct? You had reports of the injury being a ligament tear.

I never claimed Price did not have issues. I just compared him to Sonny Gray who has had way more injury issues.

Any pitch thrown by Kelly Barnes at any time is cause for concern

Kelly and Barnes are moving from our 2-3 RP'ers (where they did pretty well) to our 4-5 RP'ers, where they will be favorably compared to other league pitchers in those roles.

I disagree. Inconsistent at best

Id take Price over Gray any day of the week. I just think Boston has not done enough far as Rotation and Bullpen depth

I really like Gray, but Price is much better, and I think the health risk is not really in Gray's favor.

I think they are looking at it this way...

We added starter depth by assuming Price and Wright will be healthy all year.

We added pen depth by assuming Smith, Thornburg, Workman and Maddox will be available for 100-150 more innings this year over last,

It remains to be seen, if the assumptions come true.

I think we wait it out and make a move mid season, if needed. We might only have enough budget room for a partial season contract or two.

He's only 24, and he's never really had a long stretch of brilliance, but he does have some nasty stuff. He's been pitching with knee issues for much of his career, so maybe this surgery is going to make the difference. He certainly has a lot of promise.

A 5.0 WAR in just 365 IP is pretty good (97 ERA-). Only 12 pitchers have less IP and a higher WAR.

His 1.29 WHIP in the last 3 years is as good as Pineda's and better than Lance Lynn's.

He was definitely booed a few times, and there was definitely some over critical people all over Red Sox forums. I remember people actually suggested we cut Ortiz mid season.

You can deal him, but I don't know how much value he has right now. You'd probably get more for Pomeranz who has a good chance of massive regression this year.

That's true. I remember one TalkSox member proposing that Ortiz be replaced by Daniel Nava who had still not played a game in the majors. To the discerning eye (like mine), it was obvious that Ortiz still had his bat speed, and patience was urged.

When? He was still in A ball at the start of 2009. After July 1, Ortiz hit 20 HR and went 250/341/521. Nava wasn't able to hit that OPS in AAA until 2012.

That person was under some delusion.

Rmember Nava's first at bat in the bigs for sure though!!!

Maybe it was 2010. I think Ortiz was in a slump at the beginning of 2010 too. I quote that TS member in my signature.

I was there for that game -- a drizzly Saturday afternon game against the Phillies and fat Joe Blanton.

Ortiz struggled for 2 weeks in April and then mashed in May. What a weirdo.

For a year or two, yeah, and even then, only righties.

(I loved his grit.)

Another mediocre talent that Sox fans often falls in love with. Right now it's Holt. Just because you can play eight positions badly doesn't make you a super utility guy. And then he takes out Kelly by going up the 'middle'. If I buy the Sox, he'd be first to go along with anyone else that oppose me.

Holt "opposes" you?

Feb. 22: An announcement [re: JD Martinez] will not take place today, the team told reporters including Rob Bradford of WEEI.com (via Twitter). It seems the physical is still yet to be completed.

The doc probably had an early golf game.

Your right. Value probably is low. Every time he throws it just doesn't seem like he has #1 or #2 stuff as they say.

I go back to 04 07 13. Dominate starting pitching. Pitchers who were work horses in Pedro Schill Beckett Lester Lackey. At the moment Boston does not have a horse. We all thought Sale was that guy and Price in 16 but all flamed out in the Post season...

Maybe Cora will work magic with the staff but I still say ERod is over valued...

I was not trying to imply that it did not happen because I don't remember it happening.

I was, in fact, suggesting that it probably did happen based on the criticism that I read in the forums.

ERod could have a great second half for us.

If Price can stay healthy, I love our rotation- top to bottom.

I think Price (if healthy) will have a big year.

I also think Porcello will have quite a bounce back from last year.

However, I think Pomeranz is going to drop off some.

If we stay healthy, we'll have one of the best rotations in baseball.
