I love the argument that since poor people have to struggle to get by financially, then it's perfectly ok for comfortable middle-class people or the filthy rich to scrape and claw for every nickel they can get as well. Note above, how JH's frugality is seen as comparable to the micro-economies of people shopping at the 99c store.

Strawman.

High taxes , whether income, property, sales or whatnot, has an effect on the economy of the state involved. You will tend to see higher rents, higher cost of goods and services, etc. All of this is okay if you can afford it and don't mind paying. But for a lot of folks, it is a serious problem.

Maine is a beautiful state but also very expensive to live in particularly when the darker colder seasons come. there is a lot to be said for being able to stay active when the skiing is done. As for me, the warmth, the length of the day, as well as the cost of living makes a big difference.

I live in one of the most highly taxed zones in the world. The top personal tax rate is 54%, and we pay 15% VAT on just about everything.

OTOH most of our health care costs are looked after and education is generally affordable.

We have quite a number of friends who come to Florida during the winter months. It is very interesting discussing the differences that exist between the two countries administratively. Not to mention that all of them are in love with the game of hockey.

I was in Halifax a couple of months ago. I found Nova Scotians more upbeat than other Canadians I have spoken with recently. Unscientific I know but I found it interesting nonetheless.

“Poverty is a choice!!”

Unlike many posters here apparently, poor people do not choose where to live based on state taxes.

The subject, as you know perfectly well, is not "economic considerations generally"; the subject is STATE TAXES, which a number of you were arguing was a key factor in determining where to live. Now just in case there's confusion here, let me state my position again: anyone who bases 'where they live' on the difference between state taxes is someone I just cannot relate to.

(Now for further clarity, I'm not even saying it's BAD or MORONIC to be a money-grubbing Scrooge who would sacrifice happiness for a few extra bucks. If that's what someone wants to do, go for it.)

The number of New Jerseyites and New Yorkers moving to Southern Delaware the last few years has been staggering. Invariably when asked why it is because of State taxes. A similar style house here vs New York or New Jersey will be about 15 000 less in property taxes per year.

Agreed. Nova Scotia is a great place to live, all things considered.

Most common move in 2020 was NYC to Boise. Telecommuting made it possible, and the tax differences/cost of living was reportedly immense

It is well documented that folks are fleeing New York because of the tax differences.

Usually, where there are high taxes, there is also a higher cost of living.

People often move to places where they can get more bang for their bucks.

And moving to connecticut where the taxes are even higher.

What's the tax sitch in the DR like?

18% goods and services tax called ITBIS, a scaled income tax (which rich people game very easily with tax breaks and underreporting).

I'm lucky that a lot of my income as a lawyer is practically undetectable, as a lot of people don't want to report taxes on legal services. That's on a personal level, services provided through the office however, pay both ITBIS and contribute to the calculation of the tax bracket for the income tax reported by the company AND both partners.

All I know is I have a heck of a lot of new neighbors who used to live in Connecticut.

Yup, people move out of connecticut, but in recent years there's been a huge uptick in NYers moving here. I saw my property value double, I bought my house for $350,000 in 2018, and today it's worth over $700k. All the New Yorkers moved here, and they decided to stay because they can all work remotely now. The price of things tells all.

Don't let them come any further south.

Then why are more of them going to Connecticut/New Jersey than Florida?

Not of retirement age…

Well I'm not going to pretend that the people I personally know of retirment age moving to CT are an accurate representation of the demographs. But overall, CT has seen a population increase and the largest in decades the last several years. That's well documented too, and most of those people are coming from NY, and we have higher taxes.

It takes a unique mental outlook to live everyday down here.

I think most of the retirees are moving to Florida and those not of retirement age and still work in NYC move to NJ/CT…

Many working age families are moving to Texas.

Florida is the number one destination for fleeing New Yorkers, but Jersey plus CT surpasses that.

People move for a whole host of reasons, but I certainly wouldnt' argue with your take here. Florida has always been a retirement destination.
