There were some big acquisitions in the offseasons preceding each of the Sox 3 titles this century.

I'm not sure Vic, Napoli and Dempster were "big", but I guess combined, maybe.

The biggest acquisition for the 2007 ring was from 2 winters beforehand (Beckett).

“Momentum” Toward Reunion Between Red Sox, Eduardo Nunez

By Jeff Todd | February 15, 2018 at 5:14pm CDT

There’s “momentum” toward a deal that would bring infielder Eduardo Nunez back to the Red Sox, according to MLB.com’s Ian Browne (via Twitter). Indeed, the organization “could be close” to striking a deal with the versatile veteran.

Nunez, 30, has long been mentioned as a target for the Sox, who could use the depth in the infield and are especially interested in finding a fill-in for the still-recovering Dustin Pedroia. While there’s some optimism that the team’s long-time second baseman won’t miss an extended period to open the year, he has been banged up a fair amount in recent seasons. Plus, the organization is also preparing to rely on the relatively unproven (but plenty talented) Rafael Devers at third.

Though Nunez has spent most of his career elsewhere, he made an impression during his stint in Boston after arriving in a trade deadline swap from the Giants. Nunez posted a robust .321/.353/.539 batting line with eight home runs in 173 plate appearances after the deal.

Yankees have all the buzz ...Redsox are like following curling In the olympics .

Curling might not get all the buzz, but it is a most interesting and intriguing sport.

Momentum is good. Until it suddenly disappears.

I hope he gets signed. I would be happy to have him back.

5:29pm: The sides have a deal in place pending a physical, per Robert Murray of Fan Rag (via Twitter). If completed, it’ll be a one-year pact with an option.

Sounds good to me.

Because they didn't need to rush the decision?

Nunez back would be a great pick up.

Maybe DD should be given some credit here for waiting on Nunez. There has been interest in him elsewhere.

Maybe the timing is now right to sign him to a short deal as opposed possibly having to commit to more years earlier in the off-season.

"Or not".

yeah thats true but i was thinking maybe they were saving the money for martinez.

who knows?

I personally think they wanted to see what was happening with Martinez, first, but have now just got to the point where they need to make their moves to get the club ready for ST.

Martinez could still well end up here. I'm just beyond caring anymore at this point to be honest.

I hope Nunez has a rigorous medical.

Yes. This to me is the only concern that I have about bringing him back.

Nobody must have thought his knee was healthy enough to give a long term deal to. There goes the concern about Pedey right there. The old man can now return when he is ready. This is an interesting development as I assume to get Nunez on a 1 yr deal, they needed to give him a fair chunk of change. I wonder if this has been in DD's back pocket and he finally got sick of JD

Actually, this move likely ends the JD Martinez saga. I also think this satisfies the Hanley issue as well. For the beginning of the season, Hanley is a regular, Nunez moves to 2b and all is honkey dorey. When Pedroia returns, I think Nunez plays a lot of 3b, supplanting Devers to the DH role and relegating Hanley to platoon DH duties

I doubt that it ends the JD saga. But if our offer to him gets pulled I'm sure we'll find out pretty quickly.

Nuuuuuuuuneyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!.I don't know how this impacts JD ...but I'll tell you as a human being how I'd feel ...I would act like it didn't bother me ....but I'd be pissed at My agent and tell him to make a deal NOW !!!with Boston . Edited by Natick to NC

I doubt Nunez affects the JD negotiations, except to maybe add more pressure on Boras and JD to sign before we move on.

1) It all but guarantees HRam does not vest (unless 2-3 guys get hurt)

2) It allows Pedey to ease up a bit.

3) It provide better but not plus defense at 3B, if needed (Devers could DH).

4) It allows us to deal Holt and knock $2M off Nunez's deal.

5) It allows Marco to recover and start in AAA.

6) It gives Cora the flexibility he could use.

7) Say good bye to Marrero (out of options).

Give him a triple physical.

As a a defensively limited player with a career OPS+ of 98, Eduardo Nunez posted an OPS+ of 99 in 76 games with the San Francisco Giants last year before posting an OPS+ of 129 in 38 games with the Red Sox.

I expect Nunez, who turns 31 years old in June, to produce near his career norms. Depending on his contract, Nunez could be a wise pickup.

It doesn’t affect JD at all.
