If you could reverse any trade/FA signing in Sox history, what would it be?

For me, I'd make sure that Babe Ruth never went to the Yankees. That would be such an alternative timeline that you wonder how the rest of the franchise history shakes out for both clubs.

Bonus points for it taking $$$ out of CHB's pocket because f*** Shaughnessy.

Signed Andre Beltran.....he was a perfect fit in Fenway. Hard ass, good defender, always a threat offensively

Future HOFer Adrian Beltre. That guy was a monster and we picked him up on the cheap. That would have solidified our 3B situation and we wouldn't have Pablo.

The comp pick we got is currently our 3rd string C who is currently hitting .208/2/11 and OPSing .625 in AAA.

Carl Crawford is the worst in my lifetime.

What if they had signed Jayson Werth that offseason?

I wanted them to sign Adam Dunn that offseason. He was terrible in 2011, but OPS'd over 100 for the remainder of his career.

We got out of that Crawford trap and won the Series the next year. Thank you Ned Colletti Flenders.

I think we miss the opportunity to sign Max Scherzer instead.

"We did this for our fans. We want to win now," said Johnson, whose group bought the Dodgers in March for $2.15 billion. "When you bring in the type of players that we've brought in, it sends a message to our fans that we want to win. Our players are extremely happy."

"We understand that you have to spend money to be good in this league, and we understood that before we bought the team," Johnson said.

I love reading the news articles from August 2012.

Trading Fred Lynn.

I agree. This one was like a punch in the gut.

Losing Fisk was a travesty, but that wasn't a "signing" or "trade"- just sheer madness and incompetency. .

The CC signing was horrendous, but we got out from under it, so I'd say the Pablo signing was the worst signing.

He turned out awesome, but I remember a lot of whining when he was first signed by the Sox.

Not that it's necessarily the worst signing, but the one I'd most like to undo is the Pablo signing.

Maybe the best is for David Ortiz

The Seattle Mariners got only a supplemental draft pick in 2010 after the Red Sox signed Adrian Beltre, who was merely a Type B free agent under the antiquated compensation system in place at the time.

With the compensation pick, the Mariners drafted righthander Taijuan Walker, whom the M's traded with Ketel Marte six-and-a-half years later for Jean Segura, Mitch Haniger and Zac Curtis. Heading into today's game, Segura and Haniger had posted 1.3 fWAR each this season despite injuries that have limited the duo to 22 and 21 games, respectively.

Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena. Arroyo has been a mediocre but serviceable starter almost every year since and would have been a huge relief in all the intervening times the rotation was being pieced together due to injury. Pena gave the Sox one memorable grand slam in a game against Baltimore and was largely irrelevant otherwise, and has already faded into the obscure statistical history he was always destined for.

I thought is was odd that the Sox moved Arroyo so soon after extending him. His contract was a bargain, too. They must have thought Pena was something really special. Legit power bats are always at a premium and the Sox thought that they were getting their eventual Papi replacement, I guess.

Still, the deal was not completely bad. After all the comedic value of Pena in left field was worth something. Right?

Trading Bagwell for 2 months of a middle reliever is historically bad.

Giving up Cecil Cooper for an old George Scott.

Trading Ben Oglivie for Dick Mcauliffe.

I would rate these as the 3 worst trades in my lifetime.

More than Bagwell?

More than Lynn?

More than Burleson?

Burleson trade favored the sox, he basically had a career ending injury, while we obtained Carney Lansford and Mark Clear. We then turned Lansford into Tony Armas.

In the 80s and 90s signing washed up sluggers like Jack Clark and Andre Dawson were not the worst moves, but not good.

Burleson was a little before my time. I was just looking at his stats and don't see anything even above average and just 1 gg. Was there something that about him that doesn't show in the stats?

It was an era of weak hitting shortstops, he was decent offensively for a shortstop with a great arm. Most important he would do anything to win.

Need to get butts in the seats. Those were better signings that Dante Bichette and Jose Canseco.

Bichette and Canseco were both trades, we traded Otis Nixon for Canseco and made a multi player trade for Bichette. Easily out of those 4 Canseco had the best year for us.
