I liked Arroyo too. I disliked that trade too. But the guy has made over $80 million in his career as a perfectly average pitcher, so I don't think he really needs my sympathy.

Players are money grubbing fiends, agents are money grubbing fiends, they're all money grubbing fiends.
Players if left to their own devices would almost all be broke within 5 years of the conclusion of their careers. They are not professional money grubbing fiends like agents and owners.

Players hire agents to take care of that, and they don't hire Boras because he's a nice guy.

And they should hire people to represent their interests or the owners would fleece them at every turn.

Oh, I don't doubt that. But I do think players have gotten pretty freaking greedy in their own right.

They are not playing for free, but there are some players who are naive and don't have a clue as to their worth. There are no naive owners. They are all professional money grubber -- no exceptions.

I don't like this entire situation of big salaries and bigger owner's profits, but OTOH the only way to change that is for the fans to stay away, and that's not going to happen.

Which Scott Boras does very well, probably better than any agent ever..

Actually, it might as alternative forms of entertainment arise. Sure, baseball will always have it's diehard mainstay fans, like most of this board, but the casual fan dollar can wander to another venue...
