I don't think there is any question about pitcher's careers being shortened back in the day. It is a big money issue now obviously.

Exactly. And comparing a relief pitcher whose entire career was relatively coddled to the relievers from the 60’s and 70’s isn’t fair.

And comparing those old relievers to relief pitchers from the 1930’s and 40’s - where relief pitchers were starters in between starts - is equally misleading...

I agree 100%. I miss Ellsbury. Remind me again, how did Ellsbury do this season with the Yankees?

Put up MVP quality numbers for them

I would consider selling high on Bradley. It is only a matter of time before he goes into an 80 game slump where he looks like he has been struck blind. They have Rusney Castillo ready to step in.

It is possible (and hopefully unlikely) they sell high on Bradley. But I’m not so sure about Castillo.

Dombrowski attended Castillo’s tryout and reportedly left with the opinion that Castillo was, and I quote, “a fourth outfielder.”

Maybe a few years in Pawtucket has changed DD’s opinion. But has it changed it enough to take on the remainder of that contract? I’m doubtful it’s increased that much....

With the advanced analytics in every front office, the impressive five-game postseason series would do little to enhance Jackie Bradley’s trade value.

It's been more than a five game postseason series though.

And even back when he was still slumping, he was hitting the ball with authority.

That said, I don't want him to be traded, and never did.

I am happy that he and Price, both of whom have taken more than their share of criticism this year, are having their postseason moments. I am happy for both. :)

Yep, I'll say what she said.

JBJ has been my favorite Sox player since before he was even called up.

He still is.

Even during all of the softlaw calls for him as the best player ever?

I hated being on the same side of any issue with softlaw, but as always, he took things to an extreme.

Going to wait for him to go super saiyan again in 2022.

Will he just be a platoon? If so it could be horrific.JBJ seems like he’s not even close to being a plug and play bat but Defense won’t suffer .Suzuki needs to be the guy we go after and make JBJ a 4th outfielder .Prospects acquired for Renfroe for pitching ? Maybe Oakland gets a subsidy for JBJ in such a deal also ? .

Come on, get optimistic -- this isn't football, where every bet is placed on what teams did the week before. Jackie's an old pro. He's already been partying with his old/new assistant GM and some former Red Sox teammates just this week!

I'm wondering if we might not flip JBJ to another team for a pricey pitcher.

Maybe he's the place setter for Duran.

He's an awful expensive platoon/defensive 4th OF'er.

The prospects are the only thing that makes this deal look like a possible winner.

Emphasis on possible.

I suppose he's still young enough to put up another .800+ season- or even just .775, but it seems doubtful.

What about the defensive upgrade?

I can’t see it coming close to outweighing the negative offended, and I’m afraid it might make it easier and more likely to use Kike at 2B more than I’d like to see. Now, that would improve 2B defense, but cancel the gain in the IF.

If we get Suzuki, big changes are coming.

In wouldn’t hold my breath on a tumor started by SG.

Granted, he’s working with the same level of info I am, do not sure if that underscores or dashes my credibility. But I think that got JBJ for one reason - to play CF. Maybe they use him to work Duran into the lineup. But I think primarily he is going to play CF.

Right now all the Sox have for the corners is Verdugo and Duran. Not so sure it stays like that. But whoever this other corner OF is - Kris Bryant, Michael Conforto, Nick Castellanos, Manny Margot, whoever - it will be someone to make up all or part of the offense Renfroe took with him…

No chance of JBJ or Kike in RF?

Sure there is.

I suppose then instead of a corner OF, they’d be looking for a 2b. But it is easier to ramp up the offense with a corner outfielder…

Renfroe was a good get a year ago, but his offense -- home runs and strikeouts -- is hardly irreplaceable nowadays. Including his negative dWAR in '21, his overall WAR was 2.3 -- better than 0 WAR in '20, close to his 2.4 in '18 and '19; his career average is 2.2. Bradley, in comparison, has a career average of 2.8 WAR; with six straight years of at least 2 WAR before his negative NL season.

BB-ref considers 2+ WAR the benchmark for MLB starters, with 5+ "All-Star Quality". Fangraphs rates a 2-3 WAR player as a "Solid Starter", 3-4 a "Good Player", and 4-5 an "All-Star". No matter which site you prefer, JBJ was 5+ in his AS year in 2016. He may never approach that again, but chances are he could be worth 2 wins again... given the opportunity.

If not, there should be plenty of other options available. In 2021, 35 MLB batters had as many HRs as Renfroe's 31, and 125 guys had WAR scores of 2.3 or higher...

JBJ is NOT on your team right now to start. He is a very expensive 4th OFer. Bloom bought Bradley's salary to increase prospect return. In typical Bloom fashion, I bet he thinks a focused utilization of Bradley can maximize his production, aka value, and he might be able to find a taker who would give him something of value back after this year.

Sox fans need to understand what Bloom is. He is a descendant of moneyball, an architect of Rays-ball and will literally deal off your most sentimental player if it adds value to the club. He is the epitome of the corporatization of baseball. Your team should benefit from this, but I wouldn't get attached to any players. The days of guys hanging on and having a fanfare filled farewell tour will be over in Boston. But there's a good chance you'll hang banners

JBJ has a pretty predictable curve on a season does he not ? Spectacular Defense ,painful slump ,Hot as molten Lava ,Slump once again ,Playoff hero .JBJ is not the problem and really never has been .Xander and Devers Defense to me is a problem Bloom needs to grow a pair of balls and demand Cora moves them off short and third .Start JBJ in my opinion in CF or RF every game . No way I have JBJ on the bench period .The man along with Kike can rival the days with Mookie .That being said opens up some discussion though .Duran And Verdugo ? Which one would you keep moving forward ? Is Verdugo only Benny 2.0 ? Is Duran the next Swihart ? I would trade Duran over the two .Suzuki ? Is the rumors true and this is plan A ? If so are we looking at Kike as a full time SS ? Ahhhhh see what I did there ? Why not blow up payroll this year and get Kris Bryant also ? Kike Kris Devers Xander all can play multiple positions and give the team flexibility.Sorry for so many posts it’s been a minute for me .

I would doubt this.

Now if transactions resume and we get a 2B, then JBJ is a forth OF. But given the options available at 2B, it looks like it might be Kike back to the infield and JBJ/Duran in CF...
