The logic of "JBJ sucks, lets trade him for an all star on another team" really makes sense if you don't think about it. I think Pomeranz sucks, think we can trade him for Kershaw?

Throw in Swihart and I think they jump at it!

Well, 4 of or 7 hitters with a .265 BA in the last 28 days are named Leon, Nunez, Vazquez and holt

Chicken scratches.

Vazquez is PUZZLING. He doesn't swing and miss a lot, yet he can't buy a hit. Maybe because it's really weak exit velocity.

He doesn't have a great hit tool to begin with. He does make a lot of contact in the zone though. Right now his BABIP is only 229 (career average is 298). He's hitting the ball harder than he has in years past. It's just not falling in right now. Seems like bad luck to me.

The only feasible time to deal JBJ is in the offseason. A team in contention can't trade their starting center fielder without a nifty backup plan which we don't have.

*cough* Rusney Castillo *cough*

Hey, it's not your money or mine.

He hit well last season. This year he hits like he never seen an offspeed pitch.

He's still making contact and the contact is even harder than last year. It's just bad luck at this point. Or really good luck last year.

Here are Rusney's stats this year in Pawtucket.

BA: .316

OBP: .345

SLG: .436

OPS: .781

Even he hits .260 in the majors (his career average), that's a big upgrade over JBJ.

Maybe for a fantasy team? If Castillo hits 260 with meager power, I'd rather just roll with Nunez/Swihart/Holt.

No, but it's JH's money and he won't do it because the penalties for 2018 would be exorbitant, and not only financial ones.

The added penalty is not all that terrible, but when you add it to the already existing taxes, it adds up.

Along with the draft pick penalties for being over by $40 million plus.

Yes, my point was moving down 10 slots from 29th to 39th is not all that terrible.

if the Sox trade Bradley and his $6.1mill salary and then promote Castillo and his$11.7mill salary, they only increase payroll by $5.6mill, which is easily under the payroll penalty limits.

Doesn't leave much room for other upgrades. Or include the salary of any player acquired for Bradley. ..

I have us being only $2-3M under the $40M mark, when you figure in benefits costs.

Correct.

Which means even at pro-rated numbers adding Castillo and trading JBJ for no salary would come pretty close, if not put us over, unless we wait until August.

I don't think Castillo is worth the risk, hes a lost cause.

The biggest risk is that once you add him to the 40 man roster, there's no going back and then counting the salary against the limit until the contract is over.

As of now, the risk is too great.

Back to Jackie....

Barring news of some mysterious injury, this is stunning regression by JBJ.

NO DOUBT, Cora has him working overtime with the hitting coach? Of so you would think?? The troubling thing is seeing absolutely no evidence that he's trying to change his approach? This leads me to wonder if Cora is trying to take a low key approach to working with JBJ? Is there any chance that this could be the case. Just keep telling JBJ, "don't worry about it kid. You'll hit your way out of this...." If certainly feels that way? Why else would JBJ continue to swing aimlessly from his arss on every pitch. I'm not sure I've ever seen a guy so consistently rip over the breaking pitch down & in. It's stunning the consistency he shows on This?

If Cora is taking the Le se faire, "no worries kid," approach, what is the breaking point? When does Cora begin to worry that he's cementing back in JBJ's old bad habits, and potentially helping him dig a ditch too deep to swing out of?

It's time he was forced out of this. Very limited objectives on every ab. It's ONLY about making contact on every swing, and perhaps working the count? idk ?

He showed signs of changing his approach a week or so ago when he started going the other way. Seemed to snap him out of it for a few games but I don't recall him doing it much lately.

Agreed. In fact, in his inaugural season, that's exactly how he radically turned his young MLB career around. He suddenly started harnessing that raw power and pounding the ball to the opposite field.... We were having the same conversation..... "FANTASTIC CF'r, but can he hit MLB pitching?" And suddenly this fledgling GOLD GLOVER began to show us that in fact he could hit mlb.pitching. could even hit a semi-respectable .260+, while playing CF like few others ever have....... Still, he inevitably backsides for months at a time, only to get hot again. The cycle goes on & on with this kid. Well....... "This kid ain't a kid no more!" This full grown man inexplicably routinely forgets the basics of keeping his head ON THE BALL fully through the zone, and gives into the lure of swinging from his arss & pulling the s*** out of every pitch. NOW he daydreams about launch angle, and 30 bombs to DEEP RIGHT FIELD, while his rotating head rips his shoulders into Right field, while he repeatedly fans over one after the other breaking ball down & in. At least the fans down the 1st base line are regularly getting a nice breeze.

Well, it's back to the future.... can the 'kid.....' ah.... mature MLB cf'r remember how to hit with consistency? Can her CONSISTENTLY remember to keep his head and shoulders on the ball all the way through the zone? Can he remember to GO WITH THE PITCH and start punishing pitchers when they give him the outside of the plate? Can he pick up on the breaking ball down & in, and lay off?

Well..... Once again, mlb pitchers have figured out that down & in GAPING HOLE in JBJ's swing. They see that he simply can't pick up on the spin of the ball, and sees every pitch as straight inside cheese ..... like a Pavlovian mouse, Jackie can't lay off the 'whiff' of cheese..... On & on we go..... Will 'The kid's' .... mature GG'r make it back out of the maze, & remember every pitch ain't cheese????

It's maddening!

It's time for this mature MLB player to get back to the basics of a controlled swing, and give up the ghost of launch angles & right field bombs! Stop swinging from his arss every pitch. Keep his head & shoulders on the ball ALL THE WAY through the zone. Stay under control, and quiet down that swing. ....... Get that head under control & off the swivel.

DRIVE THE BALL under control to the opposite field!

Sorry to rant! Just needed to get that thesis off my chest.

Now go get 'em kid's! :) Go back to the future that kept you up for good in the bits. Drive & slap that ball opposite field.

package deal for Machado ? I'd do it in seconds .

For a half year rental? Pass. Those deals rarely help the team acquiring the big name player.

Maybe the best part of our farm being depleted is that we don't have the pieces to get Manny Machado.

Why trade for him in July when you can just sign him in November if you really want to?

Because we may want his bat for the playoff run, but fortunately we don't have the pieces to get him while some other teams do.

I don't see Machado coming to Boston under any circumstances. We don't have the pieces to trade for him before the end of the season and JH isn't going to go over the mega-LT limit after the season is over (IMO). And I'm happy about that.

Deadline deals are overrated IMO. Maybe get a reliever or two on the cheap, but not a high profile guy.
