Marrero has been optioned to bring up another arm, Velazquez, I believe. I guess Velazquez so he can piggy back off of Johnson if needed.

Looks that way.

Pablo lives another day.

For what though? If they won't play him, then they should just DFA him and get it over with.

Perhaps not this year if the FO doesn't think the team has what it takes, but there is an impetus to win a title within the 3 year window, IMO. If the FO thinks that the team is one piece away, Dombrowski will pull the trigger.

The Betts window is at least another 10 years.

Maybe I missed it but any updates on Holt and Thornberg?

Put it this way: their return this year is so uncertain that you might as well forget about them.

Thornburg was told to stop his long throw rehab, so there's no time table. There's also no diagnosis yet either. Strange.

I'm not sure even Holt knows when he can start rehab.

Carson Smith is supposed to start pitching in the minors soon. Maybe 30 days to MLB.

Given that the Red Sox have traded their share of highly-coveted prospects in recent years to land the likes of Craig Kimbrel and Chris Sale, it isn't surprising that the club took 26 college players in this Draft. College players traditionally get to the Major Leagues quicker.

Moon, what we talked about. Drafting college kids to get ready for impending cliff diving.

Good call.

I do not disagree with any of this. I have confidence in Mookie to know what he has to do.

Mookie's last 7 games:

AB R HR RBI SB Avg OPS

13/30 6 2 4 2 .433 1.361

lol ...What more does he HAVE to do?

They could move him down in the order to create more RBI chances, which some of us have been calling for... for two months now.

OTOH it's kind of nice to know he's going to have more PA's than anyone else.

I see where Maddon just moved Rizzo to the leadoff spot.

Yes, and couple this with the theory that some of our 2nd and 3rd tier prospects are doing very well this year, so far, maybe "the cliff" can be transformed into just a steep hill.

From another thread...

Betts is not the only player on the rise:

JBJ .537 to .807 since May 14th.

Pedey .638 to .759 since May 3rd.

Leon .496 to .639 since May 5th.

HRam frrom .641 to .750 since April 28th.

Pablito from .616 to .647 since June 9th.

Vaz from .754 to .788 since may 20th.

One of our most consistent hitter this year, Moreland, has gone up from .765 on May 16th to .877 today. He was at .807 0n June 4th.

Even Bogey is back on the rise after going from over .870 to .812 a couple days ago. He's up to .834 after tonight.

Yes, I cherry-picked the sample dates, but we're 16-7 in the last 23 games, and our offense has improved just about top to bottom.

I usually just look at # of games above .500. We're up 9 games now which I believe is season high. In many respects, it's unreal. We haven't had full complement of players yet.

Also, the Sox reportedly approached Betts with a multi-year deal this past offseason, but Betts declined, saying that he was comfortable going year to year. That may not mean anything for his long term future with the team, but then again, it may.

Yup, good call. The cliff may not be quite as steep as it was, but it is still looming large.

Well nothing more if he keeps hitting like he has in the last 7 games. Prior to that, he was scuffling. Looks like he's back on track.

Mookie should be hitting 1st or 4th, IMO. I think ideally he slots into the 4th spot, but I have no problems whatsoever with him leading off.

With our lack of power, I think Mookie up 3rd or 4th is better.

With Bogey's lack of power, I feel he should be batting 1st or second.

I like Beni one or two, but I have no issue with Pedey up 1st or 2nd.

I agree that Bogaerts, with his high BA and low power and good running ability might help us more hitting 1st or 2nd while Betts might be better 3rd. Pedey is also a good hitter without a lot of power and also needs to stay early in the order. Beni can hit a little later, perhaps 5th is reasonable for him while Moreland is our best cleanup hitter. Hanley hasn't shown much this year and for that reason I would move him to 6th with JBJ 7th. After that we have whoever catches and whoever plays 3rd base.

If we do somehow get a better 3rd base prospect (Devers or Trade related), then the lineup can change again.

Sounds like we agree, in theory.

I expected a high-scoring game tonight.

I'm glad Pom came to pitch tonight. Nice to see him last to the 7th.

I'll be at the next two games as well.

Some recent news...

Trevor Plouffe traded to Rays fo cash considerations.

John Farrell was "ecstatic" over a 33 pitch session by ERod. He may be back earlier than many of us thought.

Tyler Thornburg will undergo surgery to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome. Thornburg, will miss the entire season. Several pitchers have had this surgery: some bounce back: some don't so well. The team expects Thornburg to be ready for the 2018 season. We'll have two more years of team control after this season.

The Red Sox announcedthat they’ve placed left-hander Brian Johnson on the 10-day disabled list due to a left shoulder impingement.

Sox have selected the contract of right-hander Austin Maddox from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Southpaw Roenis Elias has been shifted from the 10-day DL to the 60-day DL in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Maddox.

Jim Callis also lauds the Red Sox for the talent they secured in rounds three through 10.

On the farm...

Jake Romanski had three hits and Rafael Devers roped his 17th double of the year and drove in a run. Mike Olt reached three times with two hits, a walk, a run, and an RBI.

Porcello and Price need to come to pitch as well.

Hanley had 610 or so plate appearances in 2016. He needs 1050 combined for 2017/2018 seasons to force Sox into picking up his option for 2019. He SHOULD be motivated to see the field every chance he gets. He just seems injury prone these days. I'm at a point I'm praying he fails to reach 1050 plate apperances.

Ben really f***ed up with Pablo/Hanley (remember for him to play left field?) signings. What we can do with $40M right now. How many of us get to keep our jobs for royal screw up?
