They are being overly cautious with HanRam because they can afford to be. There is no other big DH hitter who would force him back to 1B.

Well, Chris Young is one of MLB's best hitters vs LHP'ers, and he's on the bench due to HRam's DH only cautiousness.

How often has he been on the bench when a LHP has started?

And so far this season he has hit much worse against LHP than RHP. Go figure.

He's started all 10, but I think some were as the DH, when HRam was hurt or playing 1B.

I could be wrong.

What would be a reasonable extension for Boston shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who has two years remaining before free agency, in light of the reported five-year, $70 million extension for Seattle shortstop Jean Segura, who would have had only one more season before free agency?

Since the start of the 2016 season the 24-year-old Bogaerts has posted 6.9 fWAR and 5.1 bWAR in 209 games while the 27-year-old Segura has posted 6.4 fWAR and 6.8 bWAR in 196 games. In 2016 Segura played second base, which gets less WAR credit than shortstop.

Segura, who led the National League with 203 hits last year, is currently on the disabled list for the second time this season.

Would the Red Sox even consider an extension for Bogaerts with Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley as other extension candidates?

However the red sox do it, they need to retain all three of their young nucleus players who have years more good baseball in them. Some of the mistaken big contracts of the past will begin to clear and give cap space for offering our young players what they are worth.

We don't seem to have a separate thread to talk about the last days/nights game, so I will use this thread.

Last night we saw the good in that we got a win against the Yankees in their home ball park. It was good that we have the bats to make a pitcher pay when they made mistakes across the middle as Moreland, Rameriz and beni were able to do. We also saw a lot of hard hitting from Bradley even though he hits into hard luck still. Farrell used his pitching staff pretty well to win the one in hand. Lets worry about tomorrow when that comes suited me. We have an outstanding closer, maybe the best in baseball at this time. Even Pablo fielded his position well last night.

On the not so good side, our pitchers are nibblers and the Yankees, like us, make you throw strikes. We had 3 and 2 counts over and over again, so Pomeranz only lasted 5 good innings and we had to use the strength of our bull pen, probably limiting what can happen today. Also, when we go to our defensive infield, we have Rutledge and Marrerro in the lineup and neither cann hit solid relief pitching. Still, we needed to make that move and the hope is Pedey will relief that situation when coming back on Friday.

With Sabbathia on the mound tonight, maybe it will be a good time to use Young and Sam Travis. If not against a tough leftie starter, then when?

I think we will see Young and Travis.

More code for 'random'? ;)

'Random' isn't a strong enough word if you ask me. It's more like inexplicable chaos that you're better off not even trying to figure out. :D

All reasonable thoughts, but playing Travis and Young doesn't help much--unless the Sox score a bunch of runs vs. Sabathia--with the pitching issue. I think Pomeranz is the worst nibbler among the starters, but last night he was even worse than usual, but he also gave up only 1 earned run in 5 innings. Sale, Price, and Porcello all like to throw strikes. ERod too. As you say, the price for Pomeranz nibbling is the bullpen had to cover 4 innings in the first game of the series. The good news is that Monday was an off day.

I thought the Sox defense was also lacking last night. Vazquez should have blocked that strikeout pitch by Kimbrel. Betts should not have thrown to 3B which led to an unearned run, and the announcers said he mistimed his jump on that double in I think the 7th inning.

Now there's a definition I can live with. Not everything in baseball is explainable by statistics and we're probably better off not even trying to figure out why those things happen.

I'm all for it, but there is a huge hiccup: Bogaerts (and BradleyJr.) are Boras clients. The words Boras and reasonable do not belong in the same sentence.

Boras really prefers to take his players to free agency, so extensions are rare. The original 3 B's are really going to have to want to stay in Boston for it to even be entertained. And it will cost major $$$$. A Pedroia type deal is not very likely for Xander; it is slightly more likely for Bradley but only because he hasn't been the same type of impact player overall as Xander. If JBJ figures it out at all offensively in the next couple years ...

All three are arbitration eligible starting in 2018; the Sox would do well to offer some pretty large $$ to them over the next couple cycles.

Posted

Boras is Satan.

also....the outcome of every game is random. do not waste your time or energy "rooting". it is meaningless....

your time would be better spent sitting around the kitchen table with your pals and rooting for coin flips....

Boras isn't a bogeyman. Sox have enough money to pay all the guys they want to keep.
He is convenient to blame when the FO wants to pocket some money instead of spending it on the roster.

He's also to blame for whenever ownership has overpaid a player that doesn't work out, which is even more ridiculous to me.

They can't afford to pay all the B's, IMHO. They can do it but it will put them in tax hell.

No, it's all the s***** other contracts that will put them in tax hell.

The question is, who do you sit?

Beni seems to be breaking out of his funk.

JBJ is clearly doing much better and has inexplicably been hitting lefties was better than righties so far this year.

I can see giving Moreland a day off for Travis, but HRam as a DH only is squeezing Young and our lefthanded-hitting OF'ers.

Or, they can do it and not replace (in kind) Porcello and/or Sale.

Yes, exactly. Those $25-30 million annual salaries add up in quite a hurry. :)
