Perhaps there should be a separate thread on base running. The Sox have had a ton of outright mistakes this year and today was no different. First we had a lack of movement on a ball hit to second and dropped. The runner then came back to first, not seeing or being coached about the dropped ball and to make mattters worse, Moreland was doubled up not able to get up the line in time. It was a tough play but we looked bad.

Much worse was Pedroia. You have to criticize a guy who has just hit a double, but then he could have easily gone to 3rd on a ball that got away from the catcher but didn't appear to be paying attention. That cost us a run as there was a single by Bogaerts. Might have cost us the game but fortuneately not. That gaff was later compounded by Pedroia trying to stretch a single into a double. Somebody tell him, he isn't that fast. I didn't see the game the previous night but understand he also ran the bases poorly then as well.

Today is just one of many incidents this year. You wouldn't expect one of your most experienced players to be so careless.

Thanks to good pitching and Betts, we won and we needed to.

I dunno.. I don't think we want our players running on what appears to be a caught line drive. The replay clearly showed that the ball was dropped on purpose to set up the force play. Again, the umpires blew the call. Unfortunately that play isn't reviewable. (Who makes these stupid rules regarding what is and isn't reviewable, anyway? Why isn't everything except balls and strikes reviewable if there's reasonable doubt?)

I had trouble believing that Pedey hadn't gone to third on the passed ball too. I don't know if Jerry was covering for Pedey by saying that the pitcher may have been in his line of vision but I watched for it on the replay and it's plausable.

However, trying to stretch that single into a double late in the game is unforgivable. What was he thinking???

He came around first and hit the jets. I think he saw how the ball was being fielded and his little big man ego said "f***, I got this".

I don't think he was really going for two until he rounded 1st. You could see the moment he made the decision from the outfield camera on the replay.

I believe that was what he was thinking.

Moon, what do you think of Michael Chavis? He's had recent power surge. Any chance he will push Devers to 1B if Travis doesn't show enough power?

Ultimately I'd like to see power hitters in corner positions. Beni and Betts have enough power. Moreland is adequate for now.

Nope. Chavis will take over 2b.

Devers is the better third basemen of the two.

At first, I felt Devers looked more like a 1Bman than a 3Bman, at least as he matured, but according to reports, he has done a very good job improving his defense on the farm.

I see him as our 3Bman of the future, until he proves otherwise.

(I still have not given up on the idea of acquiring a top defensive SS and moving Bogey to 3B. This would allow Devers to play 1B.

Drop us a line when he does.

I won't have to. There will be dozens of posters coming out of the woodwork claiming they hated the trade at the time.

We will just have to see about Espinoza. So far, it has just been hype. And he has not lived up to it as yet. Hard throwing young pitchers are becoming very commonplace. Time will tell if he is special. There is no way to know that at this time.
