Sox needed to go on a streak like this and they finally did. I'll take it as a good sign that while every game counts a little more as the play-offs approach, they seem like they're in full gear. Slasher, what team would you rather face in the first round?

right now i am very hopeful that we can finish with the best record in AL and have homefield advantage. i believe that means we would face the WC winner in the ALDS? in that case - Detroit.

Ironic. DD's team last year vs. DD's team this year. Could it be that this guy is onto something?

I'm not sure if Detroit can overtake the Orioles, they are 1 1/2 games back. Orioles also won the season series so they are 2 1/2 games back?

Detroit 4 vs Cleveland, 3 vs Atlanta

Baltimore 3 vs Toronto, 3 vs Yankees

Detroit is playing Cleveland, a team that can rest anyone they want to. After that, they can feast on Atlanta.

O's are playing Toronto, a team still fighting for its playoff life (Jays final six games are against Sox and O's).

If the Tigers sweep their next series, they are guaranteed to be only a 1/2 game out no matter what happens in the O's and Toronto series.

Fixed.

Braves have been playing really well - amazingly ... so it'd be fun if the Tigers spit the bit on that series.

From where I sit, that's a big freaking IF if there ever was one.....now that would be a bet I'd be more than happy to wager on.

I think the Orioles get the other wild card slot, but I ain't much at predicting. I don't like the Orioles one darn bit, but I'm kind of rooting for them in this case to give the AL East bragging rights for having three teams in the playoffs. A cursory check of the Sox schedule for the season says we are 2-4 against Detroit, all games after the All-Star Break. My guess is that Toronto gets to the ALDS and will not be an easy out.

Season series doesn't matter for who makes the WC. If they are tied they will have a playoff.

The number to clinch ALE is now 1 thanks to the Yankees beating the Jays tonight. We are 6 up on the Jays with 6 games to go.

And we are up 1.5 games on the Guardians for 2d best AL record and tied with the Rangers for the best record.

Tomorrow night it's Price and the Sox at Yankee stadium vs. Cessa, a righty who gave up 3 runs in 5 innings on the 16th in Boston.

Texas lost so we now officially have the best record in the Al with a half game over Texas! Keep the train rollin'!

Number one while playing in the toughest division in MLB by far!

No division has 4 teams with more than 74 wins. We have 4 with 80 or more.

No division has 3 teams with more than 82 wins. We have 3 with 85 or more.

No division has 2 teams with more than 83 wins. We have 2 with 86 or more.

Yes, two divisions have a last place team with a better record than Tampa, but how can you blame TB for losing in this division. They hung tough vs many AL East teams until the end.

Here's an interesting look at some numbers:

Record vs AL East: only 6 AL teams have a winning record vs the AL East...

.600 42-28 BOS

.594 19-13 SEA

.559 19-15 DET

.552 16-13 CWS

.529 37-33 TOR

.514 36-34 BAL

Big positive for our side. Home and Away records are identical! When did that ever happen? To any team over a full MLB season?

I saw something on sportscenter yesterday ... only four times or something in the last 15 years the team with the best record won it all? Twice were Boston titles.

Semi-off topic question ... The Red Sox clinched a tie last night with the Jays. If the unthinkable happened - would the Sox and Jays play it out if both were guaranteed playoff spots? (since the bye to the division series is a legitimate advantage)

If both teams have the same number of wins and losses, tie-breaking procedures are used, with no additional games being played. On the other hand, teams tied for the division title will now always play a one-game playoff for the division title, even if both teams are already qualified for the postseason. This is in contrast to the earlier wild card format used, for example in the 2005 season when the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox tied for first place in their division but did not play an additional game as both teams were qualified for the postseason in any event.

The Sox could have clinched tonight but Price was getting hit hard and was left in too darn long. Also Ortiz, Betts and Hanley couldn't get a hit and had ample opportunities to drive players in. The time to clinch was tonight but we frittered away the many opportunities to do so. We used up some of our bullpen as well when the horse already left the barn. Pedey, Bogaerts and Beni certainly hitting well. Hope we get more aggressive and go for the win hard tomorrow.

I totally felt no sense of urgency........ I'm not getting why you did.

If the same result happens today like yesterday, with Owens now pitching Thursday you may feel different with your sense of urgency. I know your kidding around but they need to win one ASAP.

Perhaps you were more like JF in not feeling that sense or urgency to put the AL East away. In my view we came in with one of our better starting pitchers, a fresh BP and a day off. The Yankees came in with maybe their 3rd or 4th starter, a depleted BP and having arrived in NY at 3 am following a tough series. It looked good on paper to clinch but of course in MLB on any given night, any team can win.

So Price came in throwing 92 MPH fastballs belt high and the Yankees were hitting him hard. On a projected basis, he would have given up 9 earned runs in a full 9 inning game with probably 4 HRs. Not good for him or us, as he needs to find the corners and get lower or higher in the strike zone to be effective.

So JF had to recognize the situation, as it was pretty obvious. JF though reverted to his reluctance to make a move until after putting the Sox in a tough hole. He had been very good at making early moves during the winning streak but he waited. The result was he wound up using his BP, but after the game was in the Yankee favor.

The table setters hit and Beni and others hit but the heart of the order took the collar. When the 3, 4 and 5 hitters are stymied it gets tough to win. It was the way they looked at the plate that was discouraging. They were swinging at balls well out of the strike zone. Another day tomorrow and these guys are too great to have that happen to them again, at least I hope so.

Urgency is what is needed here. Clinch, take the pressure off and then try to win home field advantage. That will be tough facing the Blue Jays who are hot now. At least clinch now.
