Who still collects baseball cards?

Even if someone did -- if the baseball card printers decided to print up a series of GM cards along with the Manager cards they've printed for decades -- yeah, people would collect them. Why not? Ever since the Moneyball era began, if not before, general managers have been front and center of any conversation about a baseball team, and we talk about various GM's and FO's nearly as much as we talk about the players, especially in the offseason.

General Managers have been a big part of the "story" of the game for decades now, with well known GM's becoming household names in baseball circles right along with the uniformed stars. They don't steal a lot of spotlight when the players are playing, but they certainly reach the level of exposure where everyone has an opinion about their own team's guy.

I have always been amused/annoyed at the prospect of someone telling me that I am not open-minded because I don't agree with them, especially when they show no willingness to listen to my arguments. What is more annoying are those people who think they know what my opinion will be with regard to a hypothetical situation. I don't even know myself.

When I answer a hypothetical question I do it with a hypothetical answer. That seems fair... to me, anyway! :D

Of course we had to have laundry clips!

I doubt that many of our members ever did this. Just the old guys!

Did anybody pitch cards when they were a kid?

What is pitch cards?

We did a game I don't remember exactly how it was played. I think if the cards thrown in were all up, or one side would win. If the cards were all down, one side would win. If there was a card that was up and one that was down, then we dealt three cards off both our decks and then threw in again. I remember playing that anywhere and everywhere, school recess we would play or after school.

We had some hustlers in our group. I saw someone lose two entire card books of baseball cards that had a few Clemens rookies, and Ricky Henderson rookies along with many other great cards in a hour of poker. Those books were worth hundreds of dollars when I saw that happen around 1990. That was a ton of cash to us then. Those cards probably would be worth thousands now a days.

Never trust a person who goes to a dog or horse track frequently............ they will make an ace pop out of a deck and squirt cider in your ear.....

In my neighborhood pitching cards was a mano a mano game of high skill between young boys!

Two boys each with their collection of baseball cards or hockey cards or whatever they were, would stand a certain distance from a wall. You would each pitch a card low toward the wall. Whoever came closest to the wall was the winner and collected the two cards. A 'leaner' against the wall was the perfect pitch. But if you pitched a leaner first the other guy could knock down your leaner and win. That's all I remember of the rules.

Good memory on the rules. We used to flip cards too. If you matched the other kid's combination of heads and tails, you won all the cards.

I remember watching other boys play some card game. I did not like to do it myself because I valued my cards too much and money was really hard to come by.

I was wicked good at the paper triangle football game and the three penny "hockey" game.

I just saw that EE is looking for a 5/125 deal.

I think that he will get it. But not in Boston.

Too bad.

I think he might get $90M/5 with a $15M option and $5M buyout, so essentially $95M/5 or 105M/6.

I hope to hell- not here!

The job was Theo's dream job when he started. The job lost its appeal because he was not allowed his philosophical ideals in building a team. He was 'forced' to make moves that went against his beliefs. He didn't turn his back on his dream job. He walked away from a job that he was clearly unhappy with.

Theo had no idea what might have happened if he tried to 'wait it out'. You are kidding yourself if you think he should have.

It's one thing to have a dream job growing up as a fan. But once you're in the game - it's an industry, and it's a gig. Chicago offered him a promotion - imagine that.

Its interesting to see what some of our rivals are talking about in the off season. The Yankees are actively trying to move McCans and also Gardner in hopes of getting starting pitching. Gardner's possible destination is the Orioles who need an outfielder since Trumbo is likely to leave. A trade between rivals is somewhat unlikely as Baltimore doesn't look to have starting pitching that would be attractive to the Yankees. On the other hand, Baltimore may well go after Reddick on the FA market. No loss of draft picks required there, only money. Meanwhile McCans is being dangled at Atlanta who needs a catcher. Again, the hope the Yankees have is getting young starting pitching.

Interesting to see what folks other than the Sox are doing as they will be our competitors in the offseason for FA and trade deals.

Just about everyone needs pitching, and the FA market sucks for starters and set-up men.

I don't call them Set-up Men anymore I call them Holders. Becoming more important than then Closers, especially guys that can go multiple innings. 6 outs you need now to not burn out a BP.

The 'hold' is often a higher leverage situation than the 'save'.

But don't get me started on 'holds'.

And welcome. :)

Teams often will try to emulate the previous WS winner. This whole thing with how Tito used Andrew Miller may upset the applecart in regards to how relievers are used.

Oh yeah... and Welcome, OF!

I don't know how realistic that approach is during the regular season though. The postseason is a whole different animal.

That said, I do think there's going to be a focus on the set up men.

Given the fact that we have Kimbrel as our closer, I can see Koji being used as Miller was used in the playoffs - to put out the fire regardless of the inning, and then turning clean innings over to the rest of the pen.

Yup. I agree with all of this.

The problem with doing the Miller thing is that then you have to plan for your relievers to pitch 40-50 times a season instead of the 60 or 70 you actually see.

Also, part of the mission in the regular season is to cultivate some of these folks anyway. Figure out who the pitchers you trust are, etc
