Im not sure if this will be put the the sox offense thread, but looking at a couple posts and seeing what JBJ, Xander, and Papi is doing in his final year, i figured Id start a thread for it...

We can talk about JBj and Xanders hitting streaks, Papi climbing up all the offensive numbers lists in his final year making history, or even some of the old teams of the 70s (or earlier for some folks older than me) or the 2003 team with the crazy offense they had...

A thread about records that have been broken or still stand for our players throughout history...

Red Sox player that made, or are making history...

Ortiz is putting himself into rare air with the offensive numbers he will end up with. it will be very difficult for the HoF voters to keep him out.

HR: 514 (22nd all time)

Doubles: 604 (13th all time)

OPS: .928 (40th all time)

SLG: .550 (26th all time)

RBI: 1,682 (27th all time)

XBH: 1,137 (13th all time)

Being pretty much a career DH along with the PED cloud over his head may hinder his chances.

Yeah, this should have been put in the offense thread.

Why keep making extra work for YOTN?

JBJ - at what point does the nation get into the hit streak? my guess is when he gets to 35.

Let him have something to cling to. David Ortiz not only tore the hearts out of millions of Yankee fans, he came back for their livers & kidneys over the years.

The babestrikesback probably wakes up in a cold sweat after chanting 1918! In his sleep.

I have no need to "cling" to anything.

If you don't see the PED cloud associated with Ortiz you are either blind or a homer. Maybe both.

You do realize, I hope, that the very word cloud is nebulous and ill-defined. As I recall, he tested positive one time when almost everyone was tested and none of the results were to be made public. More to the point, MLB is fully capable of putting a confirmed--please note the meaning of that word--PED user on leave or probation or in a program. This has not happened to Ortiz but has happened to many others.

The PED cloud, I hasten to add, has hung over all of MLB for literally decades in large part because the all-powerful MLBPA didn't want a firm policy against PED use. I believe that era has pretty much ended, but it has left a residue. The acid test for Ortiz will come five years after he retires and is up for the HOF and the sportswriters will have to vote on what they believe. So far, I think their judgment has been pretty good.

And how do you know that Ortiz isn't in a program?

You're darn right the PED cloud has hindered candidates, and I agree with the sportswriters. My prediction is it won't affect Ortiz, but that doesn't mean much because he could be kept out because he's a DH.

I thought being in a program was made public. If not, I can only say the program must be working because Ortiz is better than ever right now. You're guy A-Rod might be in a program too, and he sure doesn't look better than he ever was.

Back to the record-setting. We count everything in baseball, of course, but to me the real significance of this team is sum of the parts, a blend of Ortiz's last hurrah, Pedroia and Ramirez hanging in there, and those five regulars who are 26 and under. Plus the bullpen. Plus our knuckleballer.

Being in the program is not necessarily made public.

And since he's "better than ever right now" it could suggest that the program isn't working so well.

"Nitwit"? What is this, 1955? Oh, and both of you knock it off. Just ignore each other and continue your discussion, no need to insult one another.

As far as the topic, the record I'm most interested in at this moment is obvious: the hit streak. Yeah, Jackie is only halfway there, but he's hitting at such an incredible pace that it seems much closer than it did when Rollins was doing it a few years ago. I'm genuinely excited about it.

For now I'm looking at the other Dimaggio hit streak. One more week and he has the red sox record.

It is crazy to think that as good as this streak again, he has to do the whole thing over starting today to tie Joe D.

I'd say at 30 it becomes espn mlb home page material. 35 sounds like a good point for it to be at least national sports news.

I don't know how many 28 or 29 game hit streaks there have been, but there have been about 50 of 30 or more. I would guess there are around 10-20 29 gamers and 10-20 28 gamers.

To put it in perspective of other baseball rarities, his streak is far more rare than a no-hitter or hitting for the cycle (about 300 each). 5 more games and he is in perfect game territory (23 total).

Some fun facts about Joe D's streak:

After the streak ended (in part by 2 great plays by Guardians 3rd baseman Ken Keltner), he immediately got a hit in 16 more straight games. 72 out of 73.

The 56 gamer wasn't even his longest. He put together a 61 game streak in the Pacific Coast League before he broke in with the Yankees.

BDC alums, do you remember the saying at the old site: Don't Feed the Trolls

Amazing, simply amazing, that the old guard on this board obsesses about how many threads there are while allowing TBSB to openly troll.

I would agree, 30 sounds about right.

Incidentally, the first mention of Joe D's streak was the day after he got 2 hits off of Bob Feller to extend it to 19 games.

Again, not trolling, clown.

Having a discussion. If you don't like it don't participate.

It's a different style, personally I kind of like it. I always thought we had too many threads and too much clutter over at BDC. At time we could literally have 4-5 threads talking about the same exact subject. That made no sense.

Although he didn't get a hit in game 57, he did walk. His streak of reaching safely went to 74 games, which is only surpassed by the Splendid Splinter's streak of 84 straight in 1949.

the only reason you posted on this thread was to disparage david ortiz.

tell me more about the mitchell report......

I am a Sox fan and will freely admit that I want to see Ortiz in the HOF.

I used to think that if he got to 500 HR then his credentials were good enough.

Now that he has eclipsed that milestone I still believe that regardless of what he does before he retires, that PED "cloud" will be held against him.

The media made a big deal out of it and it has never gone away. Anytime an open discussion of his HOF worthiness is undertaken, the "cloud" of PED use is mentioned.

So I do think that it is a real issue. Even if he has never been proven to have done anything against MLB rules. It's just the way things are.
