I'm surprised Jacko didn't recommend amputation.

Looks like they're concerned about a stress fracture. That'd put him out for practically the rest of the season and postseason if that is the case

Ellsbury is not the only one who is hurt. Jeter is hurt again. His body can no longer take playing that position. I said last year after he hurt himself in the playoffs that he would never play SS for the $panks again. I was close, as he has played only a handful of games at SS.

Does this mean Ellsbury is definitely out for the rest of the regular season? Trying to figure out if I should drop him from my Fantasy team now or not.

But the announcement is that it is a compression fracture. He might actually be able to return from that sort of fracture. However it would likely mean he would be out for all of what is left of September. But it is possible to return from a compression fracture. He would not IMO be playing at 100% even in early October if he did return. But a return is not out of the question I don't think.

Sox: Ellsbury has fracture but should return

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff September 8, 2013 05:29 PM

NEW YORK — Jacoby Ellsbury has been diagnosed with a compression fracture in his right foot. But according to Red Sox manager John Farrell, the team’s leadoff hitter and center fielder should be back before the end of the regular season.

“We feel like he’ll return this year,” Farrell said Sunday after a 4-3 loss against the Yankees. “We’re hopeful the regular season.”

A specialist, Dr. Thomas Clanton, examined Buchholz at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., on Sunday. He confirmed the original diagnosis of a fracture in the navicular bone.

Ellsbury will wear a boot to take weight off his foot for at least five days.

“After that we’ll see how he responds to treatment and how he’s feeling himself,” Farrell said.

Ellsbury is hitting .299 with eight home runs, 52 RBIs and a major-league leading 52 stolen bases. His leads the Sox with 89 runs.

The injury happened Aug. 28 when Ellsbury fouled a ball off his foot. He came out of the game an inning later but returned to the lineup the next day and played seven of the next eight games.

Ellsbury aggravated the injury when he stole second base in the 10th inning on Thursday night. Dustin Pedroia a more severe type of the same injury in 2010 and required surgery.

“We’ll have to pick up the slack. He’s a big part of our lineup and our team,” Pedroia said.

Pedroia has spoken to Ellsbury about the injury and counseled him to be patient.

“It’s something you don’t mess with. You have to make sure you take care of it and you’re able to play and run and not be sore the next day,” Pedroia said.

That Ellsbury was able to play after the initial fracture suggests the injury is something he could recover quickly from. But he was out for an extended period in 2010 because of fractured ribs and again in 2012 because of a separated shoulder.

EDIT: Maybe hasn't played his last game. I thought broken meant broken and would need time to heal.

Boras: Expect Ellsbury back for postseason

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff September 10, 2013 01:24 PM

Scott Boras, the agent for Jacoby Ellsbury, said today he expects the Red Sox center fielder to be back for the postseason, likely earlier.

According to Boras, the biggest issue for Ellsbury is the swelling in his right foot and not the small fracture on the surface of the navicular bone. The swelling is affecting the movement of a tendon coming from the tibia.

Once the swelling has gone down, Ellsbury will be able to start swinging a bat and proceed from there.

"The Red Sox' interests and our interests are the same in this, we clearly want Jacoby to be back for the postseason and we're all on the same page to make sure he's available," Boras said.

Boras described the navicular bone as having three layers. Ellsbury has what he said was a "very minute" fracture running east and west on the top surface of the bone. When Dustin Pedroia fractured the same bone in 2010, he had a fracture that ran north and south through all three layers of the bone.

"No surgical intervention is needed. This is self-healing," Boras said. "But it got to the point where it was painful and I called [Red Sox general manager] Ben [Cherington] and said Jacoby should get an MRI."

The pain grew during the long game against the Yankees on Thursday night and may have been aggravated when Ellsbury stole a base in the 10th inning and eventually scored the winning run.

Boras, like the Red Sox, could not give an exact timetable for Ellsbury's return.

"I think it will be short," he said. "He'll be able to get into a tennis shoe and do some hitting and from there maybe DH a game or two before going back to the outfield.

"This is not anything that can re-occur like a hamstring. The issue is that it's merely a response to the surface fracture. The question is how long does it take for that tendon and the specialist gave us a plan how to treat that."

Ellsbury, Boras said, has confidence in the Red Sox medical staff.

"Everybody wants the same thing here," Boras said.

I hadn't realized that he originally got the injury 8/28 vs O's. Also read that some where in the Globe

About the best news possible all things considered ... Magic Number 12 for the division, 10 for a playoff spot. Better get his time off now - and Bradley and Victorino can cover it defensively.

This is one of the cases where Ellsbury wants to get back on the field, both for his next contract as well as this season. If he misses time it's because it's a real problem. For a guy with a reputation of "not exactly indestructible", playing with some level of nicks and dents is something he'd want to show to keep his FA star shining.

Where'd you see that?

Scott Boras expects his client Jacoby Ellsbury to return by the postseason, and perhaps earlier.

Ellsbury was diagnosed with a compression fracture in his right foot over the weekend. The Red Sox agree with Boras' timeline and believe their center fielder will be able to start in games by the end of the month. Ellsbury originally hurt the foot when he fouled a ball off it on August 28 and he aggravated it on Thursday when he stole second base. Sep 10 - 2:05 PM

Ellsbury started doing baseball activities yesterday so baring any set backs he should be back the final few regular season games. Even if he isn't the treat to steal that he was having him back at the top of the lineup and in center improves the Sox chances of going deep. Having both Ellsbury and Victorino in the outfield greatly improves the D.

Right you are on that one BEL. No matter how frustrated we may get at Ells' frequent injuries, in my opinion we are a lot better with him in the lineup, and he and Shane do give us terrific defense in the outfield. Hope Jacoby is ready to play a game or two before the Playoffs start.

Ellsbury could return as early as Wednesday

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury has missed the last 14 games with a right foot fracture, but manager John Farrell said he is optimistic Ellsbury can return to the lineup as early as Wednesday.

The Red Sox play their final home game of the season against the Blue Jays Sunday, before closing out the schedule with two games against Colorado and a three game set with Baltimore.

"Hopefully he's in the lineup Wednesday," Farrell said before Sunday's game. "The work he's going through right now, the baseball activities, are starting to wrap up. There's been no setbacks. That's an optimistic view, but I'd hope we'd be able to get him some at bats that day."

Wednesday's game is at Colorado, meaning there is no designated hitter, ruling out the possibility of Ellsbury easing his way into the lineup. Farrell was optimistic Ellsbury could start in center field.

Before Sunday's game, Ellsbury was on the field playing catch with bullpen catcher Brian Abraham. Prior to the foot fracture, Ellsbury was hitting .320 in his last 17 games.

Farrell said he is looking for Ellsbury to show "further comfort with the increase and intensity of work he's been going through."

Jackie Bradley Jr. is slated to start Sunday, and has started in 9 of the last 13 games. He's also 4 for 7 in the last two games.

It's a non-displaced fracture of a non-weight-bearing bone. He had been playing on it. Give him a lanacane shot like they gave Schilling the entire 2004 season. One way or another, I think he will be back playing this week. It's an opportunity to get back in sync for the playoffs which will be his showcase for free agency.

I see the Globe is predicting Ellsbury at $20-21 million now that Pence has been extended for $18mil. But Pence is a middle of the order hitter.

I wouldn't give Ellsbury that kind of money--he's not a big run producer. Plus they have Bradley waiting in the wings, who could be better. Ells is worth Bourne money--maybe $15 mil.

I can see them signing Abreu for this kind of money, letting Ells go, and starting JBJ in CF. The kid has more power than Ells--5 tool potential.
