From the Globe:

UPDATE, 8:05 p.m.: It appears the deal was done without an extension. Look for the Red Sox to come to an agreement but not announce it until after Opening Day. That would allow them to save million on the luxury tax.

It is likely that the Red Sox and Gonzalez have an understanding of what the extension would be, otherwise it would be risky to trade three prospects for one year out of the first baseman. This is basically what happened with Josh Beckett last spring. There was a deal in place that was announced after Opening Day.

It also would allow them to make sure Gonzalez recovers from the surgery he had on his right (non-throwing) shoulder. But that is not a major issue.

Tom Yawkey was a very generous and caring man. Let's not besmirch him in this way.

Even racists can be generous and caring.

Can I just say, if this is true, thank you God for getting it done before I had to go back to work. In the same breath, damn you God for inventing the internet and the second-by-second updates that make this Red Sox fan upset.

Sherman (NY Post) is speculating that the Sox prefer to announce the extension next spring anyway to help out on the luxury tax front... gives us room to potentially add another bat (Crawford?) without getting killed financially for doing so.

Heyman just posted the probable numbers for the extension...

Appears #redsox will add about 7 yrs at about $23 mil per to a gon's $6 mil '11 salary. But no extension will be announced yet.

Nevermind, saw the above posts. What's your complaint now GoBruins? Moron.

It'll be hard for him to complain anymore, what with being permanently banned and all.

You're welcome, TalkSox.

Ken Rosenthal

Names same, per @jonmorosi. #RedSox conf of extension. Per @alexspeier, delay could be for lux-tax reasons. Also Gonz's sholdr.

Basically, they agreed to the trade with no extension in place. Werth is no longer an option so they s*** themselves and went through with the deal. Until I hear there is an extension in place, I am not counting on having him beyond 2011. This was a save face decision by a FO that took a major credibility hit today. I'm fine with this. We have a stud for 2011, but let's not paint this as a major FO accomplishment yet.

I hate seeing anyone banned, but that guy was one ******* that needed to go.

Is this a legit question? Come on man. Without fans these organizations aren't s***. Without us fans to buy tickets, beer at the games, jersey's, and everything else these f***ing clubs would all fold into nothing. We don't watch this team for our f***ing health. We put blood, sweat, tears, and money into being a fan, and it's ******** if we don't get the same in return. I'm fine with transitional years and all that but after a while we do deserve to see the team put some effort into improving themselves. I'll be damned if we have to spend more years going out getting player's at the tail end of their careers instead of locking up younger talent for years to come. The front office needs to spend money to make money. They need to take risks. If it turns out there is concern about his arm/health then fine, I can see not offering a large contract, but offering a 28 year old a contract until he's only 33 is pointless. How fair can he tail off by 36? Even if he starts going downhill by 34 so what, that's 2 years of decline and he's gone. Younger talent will be waiting by then. And even if he puts up current David Ortiz numbers by that age it'd be fine with me. Unless there is a legitimate health risk then botching this trade so far has been ridiculous and makes the front office look bad.

edit: herp derp, deal is apparently done. I resurrected myself and bitched for nothing. damn.

Welcome back! Some of us have missed you!

Excellent post.

Let them help themselves. Treat it like when you buy a car and they put you in a machine catching as many dollar bills as you can in a minute or two. Just don't put sandwitch picks in there or the GM will have a stroke.

Would you hurry up and get yourself banned please?
