  1. Why in the f*** are you walking Alvarez?!?!
  2. Bang bang play. No chance to overturn.
  3. Wasted chances. Story of the season thus far.
  4. Giants are going for the every other year deal again. 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016??? MadBum and Cueto are a pretty sweet 1-2 punch.
  5. Well... can't say I blame him if he gets a deal well north of what AZ offered. Would've liked to get him here, but not at the price he was looking for. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/giants-sign-johnny-cueto.html
  6. Yeah it would make me a bit nervous as well. I was just curious considering that when FA started the idea of getting Cueto for 6/120 would've been laughable. Now it seems that's about all it would take for the Sox to grab him. And compared to the rest of the contracts being doled out, it's not horrendous. Either that, or a shorter term deal, say 4/95 would be great. Not having to give up our draft pick would be nice as well. LOL... just looked at my original post and realized I completely forgot Porcello in the mix. Have a tendency to do that a lot with him. That said, a Cueto signing would let us move Kelly to the pen as long relief/spot start/flamethrower when needed. Makes us more complete from a pitching depth standpoint. All depends on the money though. I can see Cueto waiting it out and losing dough to sign late in FA/spring training. Would not mind a rotation of Price, Cueto, Porcello, ERod, & Buch. That would be legit against any other rotation IMO.
  7. I tend to agree. Just seems like Henry and Co. made a big exception to the rule on big contracts to 30+ yr old pitchers with the Price signing (Cueto will be 30 in Feb) and I can't imagine them doing it again for Cueto. But with DD at the helm, old thoughts and feelings seem to have gone out the window. Lets just say I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to make something like that happen.
  8. Not that it's breaking news but Cueto seems to be enamored with joining the Sox or so he's said multiple times. If he could be had for the 6yrs, $120 million he turned down from AZ, would you pull the trigger? $20 million a season is pretty much the going rate for a starter these days and Cueto would easily slot in as our #2 behind Price. Have to think that would put our rotation in a really good spot with Buch, Kelly, & ERod bringing up the back end and Johnson/Owens available as depth from AAA. Money would seem to be the issue but they've spent more for less many times over.
  9. That's what most everyone said would happen. Just needed Lester to break the dam
  10. It is if they can complete the rotation with a top level type guy. If they don't, it may backfire.
  11. Kelly/Masterson will be the 5th starter/BP swing guy. They're going to go hard after a #1/#2 type very soon.
  12. Absolutely love the moves in response to the Lester news. Sox FO is not sitting around lamenting what could have been. Stockpiling solid inning eating arms now and still have more than enough $$$$ and prospects to make an even bigger move this offseason.
  13. I'd be surprised... scratch that... completely shocked if Miley is the best arm we acquire this off-season. I have absolutely ZERO doubt that this is but a precursor to bigger moves the Sox FO had in mind when they were waiting on Lester's decision. I suspect we'll see a move to sign Shields and they'll go hard to get Hamels as well, especially since the Phillies have finally relented and decided to blow up their s*** ass team like they should've done ages ago. A rotation of Hamels, Shields, Miley, Buch, and Kelly to start the season would be pretty damn nice IMO. Combined with our lineup, I'd say we'd be back on track in a hurry.
  14. Probably. But the point still stands that it would've been hard to project Lester having the kind of season he did. Should they have come in higher on their initial offer? Sure... same could be said though of Lester and his camp, as they could've easily countered with 6/120 and kept the conversation going instead of just shutting it down immediately. If he really wanted to stay in Boston as he said he did, I think he would've done exactly that. Most of what happened took place for PR purposes only, on both sides IMO. Happens all the time. Lester pushed all his chips in, Sox tried to play as if he was bluffing only to find he really did have a flush in his hand. Sucks for us but it is what it is... looking at it now, I'm ok with the way we handled it in FA at least. We made a very fair offer and he took the most money. Don't blame him one bit... I'd do the same.
  15. No one could've predicted Lester would have the kind of season he had. Look at his career numbers... there's nothing to indicate he would go out with a complete performance from start to finish. Most every season he started poorly and then turned it on in the 2nd half. Last year was an aberration IMO. The Sox FO may have erred by underestimating Lester's desire in his walk year but most every FO would've done the same.
  16. Do you really think they won't go hard after him? I know the Yanks are saying they're not in, but come on. It's New York... they always do this kind of s***. They'll come in when no one expects it and drop $180 million in his lap to think about.
  17. Yep. Scherzer is worth at least 15% more than Lester given their overall track records IMO. That's $178 million at the very least. I suspect Boras will not even consider anything less than that to start and it will end up close to $200 million. When Scherzer turned down $144 million last spring, he told everyone what kind of money he really wanted... $200 million or bust.
  18. Last spring an offer of $120 million would have been excessively high. Of course it would've got it done. Same could be said for any player we've lost for that matter. The Sox wagered the market wouldn't change much and they lost because Lester went out and had a great walk year season. At least we got a solid trade chip in Cespedes for him. Most teams would be looking forward to a draft pick and 5 years of waiting for promise to develop in return.
  19. Not really. I could care less about the FO to be honest. They aren't as good as some people think they are but they're not as bad as some people think they are either. I'm just looking at it after the dust has settled and feel like all the hoopla over the supposed lowball offer is just hyperbole really. They made what they felt was a reasonable starting offer. Lester thought otherwise, bet big that he'd perform to higher standard, and won big in the end. Can't blame him and can't really blame the FO. It is what it is... we made a fair offer in FA or the decision would've never taken as long as it did.
  20. Would anyone here really be happy this morning if we had signed Lester to the deal the Cubs did? $26 million a season is a s*** ton of money for him... not trying to discount what he's done in his career but I don't think he's worth anywhere near that kind of coin. 2nd highest AAV for a pitcher only behind Kershaw. Lester is good but he's not Kershaw good. Sox offer at 6/135 was more than fair IMO
  21. Bingo. I don't doubt we could have done better last spring but to say Lester would've taken 5/105 is stretching the bounds of credulity. He knew he could deliver a solid season and earn at least 6/135 if not what he got. And he made it happen. Can't blame him and can't really blame the Sox FO either. It is what it is at this point. We made a fair offer in FA and he took the highest bid instead. At least it wasn't the Yanks snatching him up. I can live with the Cubs... they haven't done s*** in a century. Hope he helps them get back to relevance soon.
  22. Have to say that a rotation of Shields, Miley, Porcello, Kelly, and Masterson/Webster/Rubby/etc wouldn't be horrible. Not super exciting but it could work and wouldn't cost us the world in prospects like Hamels would.
  23. I agree that they could've avoided all of this by simply offering better last off-season, but the more I look at it, the more I think Lester planned to go to FA all along. If he'd of really taken 5/105 last spring, then a starting offer of 4/70 should've been seen by him/agents as a starting point and not a low ball. Those two deals aren't that far off. Compared to what he ended up with, the original offer is ridiculously low but that includes the benefit of hindsight, something we didn't have last spring. I suspect his agents thought that with a solid season, a 6/150 deal would be attainable and in the end it was. Hence the reason they immediately tabled talks. Had the Sox offered 6/135 instead he would've signed but no reason for us to have done so at this point last year.
  24. Looks like the Sox are in and talking with the D-Backs on Wade Miley according to Rosentwat. Not sure what it would take to pry him loose but I wouldn't mind that move. 1st year of arb, left handed pitcher, etc
