Anti-Fantasy League Draft and Discussion Thread

I think Danks is a bit of a reach here. I was debating whether or not I needed to select a pitcher in this spot but I went with Quentin because he's probably a top 10 OF over the next five years and would not be available when I selected again.

I have a few pitchers in mind but feel it's far too early to select them.

im down with guys like johan and lincecum going so early, but if you didnt make a point to get guys like that i think its a little late. and then guys like webb and cain and danks go off the board and to me it seems a bit reactionary.

But this is different from a fantasy league; here we're trying to make a realistic baseball team. At least in my opinion, pitching is much more important in real baseball than in fantasy.

Oh, it was definitely a reactionary pick. I didn't want my turn to come around again and have all of the pitchers I wanted to be off the board. Young pitchers with live arms and raw potential are a dime a dozen. Young refined pitchers are hard to come by. And Joe Morgan speaks the truth. If you don't have pitching, you won't be competitive. The Yankees have been a prime example of that the last few years.

In this sort of draft you have to reach for some players. All of us are going to take chances on young semi proven player, over maybe a more proven player that is older, Halladay for example. He is an ace now, but 5 years from now is iffy. Danks may be a reach, but a reach with major upside.

My understanding is that you pick three outfielders' date=' regardless of where they play regularly. But obviously if none of your outfielders can conceivably play center field anywhere, people will take that into account when judging your team.[/quote']

Hmm, I thought we were doing LF,CF,RF while taking defense into account like a real team. I'm going to draft that way because it's different from a normal fantasy league.

I might've taken Danks a little too early' date=' but I didn't want anyone else to snatch him first. He was and is the true ace of the White Sox. He's young, fearless, attacks the strike zone, changes speeds well, and will be a work horse. Don't let his rookie campaign fool you: he's an elite pitcher.[/quote']

I think Danks is a very good pitcher but I wouldn't call him elite just yet.

I really like Quentin. Plays an ok LF, should threaten 40 hrs every yr, pretty good obp skills, and doesn't strike out a ton. You have to just hope he doesn't hurt himself after a bad at bat again.:D

Perhaps, but if he's not elite right now he soon will be. If Jon Lester is considered elite, Danks should be as well.

Wieters is an excellent pick, if he lives up to the hype.

i really like my middle of the order, and although 3b and 1b are kind of stacked positions they dont have a lot of great young guys looking to take over. Votto being available later definately entered my mind and i like him a lot, but i REALLY dont want to reach for pitching in the first three rounds. Im likely going to have to with my next pick though

Yeah, position scarcity helps Weiters.

Jones is a bit of a reach but I love the dude too, think he's going to be a big time player.

Its been brought up about a few picks that they "couldve been gotten later" but its like any real draft, if you like a guy enough, pick him. Don't leave it up to everyone else to pass on him

Something I've noticed as the draft progresses is various team's patterns. Most notable is CrespoBlows, who has picked three SPs thus far: Santana, King Felix and Lester. He'll likely end up with the best rotation in the league, which will go a long way in judgment. On the other hand, Billerica has picked three infielders: Morneau, Pedroia, A-Rod.

That's what I like about this league as opposed to fantasy; you can watch the draft progress slowly and you get to notice patterns and quirks.
