The next pick in the draft:

Carlos Pena 1B

The rationale:

Pena turns 31 this season and is on his way to his best season yet. His power has improved since he came to Tampa and this season, it is going into overdrive. In combination with his slick fielding and his eye, he should be a good choice to perform through the next 5 yrs in a Ray lineup that should improve around him.

Make the picks in the pick thread, and have your rationale in this thread.

You have the next selection as well.

Cueto and Pena were selected, see draft thread.

Rationale behind Cueto:

Absolutely lights out repertoire. Had difficulty sustaining it in his rookie yr. This yr, he looks poised, has good command and has simply been unhittable. A young guy looking this good should only bode well over the next 5 yrs. He will likely fall off the wagon again this season as he builds up endurance, but over 5 yrs, I expect him to be a solid pick

And if I may, I had the first pick in the draft and YOTN selected Troy f***ing Tulowitzki? That might be the worst of all choice ever made by any human being. That's like pressing the meltdown button on a nuclear reactor. What the hell were you thinking?

Crap, Cueto is an excellent selection and if he ever gets out of the Great American Ballpark he's going to have a ton of success.

He was definitely on my radar for sure. Excellent choice.

Yeah, I felt that way when Jair Jurrjens went off the board. I would easily have picked him instead of Granderson.

Hey Kilo, it's a bit of work to you for me to suggest it but could you maybe take that chart on the draft thread and start recording which round we take our guys??? Overdrafts/underdrafts are a big topic for conversation so making sure we remember when we drafted who makes sense.

Like my first pick was Shields and my second was Greinke so under SP1 it'd say "Shields (1)" and under SP2 it's "Greinke (2)" and under CF "Granderson (3) and so on...

...Jurrjens was still available when you picked Granderson. I should know because I only recently picked Jurrjens.

I can do that later this evening.

One does one's best to emulate the crowd.

yea like the other day i was shootin some hoops at the local boys and girls club, when a fight broke out. so everyone crowded around and we were watching from the other side of the court where we were shootin. then all of a sudden the whole big group of 30 or so must have heard a siren in the music they were chillen to, and just f***in scattered. and i dont know why, but me and my friends who were just watching started running for our cars too, haha, and about half way there i stop and say "hey... what the f*** are we doing?" Crowd mentality is surely a funny thing

Die in a fire Kilo

THX

Rationale for the Uggla pick - while not the best defensive 2B, his power is pretty much awesome. Offensively, he's a run below the Utleys and Kinslers of the world and on par with a Pedroia, IMO - more power but slightly less plate discipline.

I have four players in mind for my next two picks. f*** you if you take any of 'em. There, warning shot fired

I didn't really want to take Volstad this early, but starting pitching is getting a little thin. Judging by the trends I figured the next time my pick came up there wouldn't be much left. Volstad is still largely unproven, and I was torn between him and Scherzer, but so far Scherzer hasn't been able to go deep into games whereas Volstad has. I think Scherzer has a chance to be the next Schilling. I think Volstad has a chance to be the next Halladay. Still, I would have liked to have taken a position player in this round.

Volstad would have been a reach, but since he's your third starter I think it's a fairly solid move. I like him but I'd like to see his K/9 numbers improve more.
