So the Sox should go back to those power offenses from the 1980’s that crushed AL pitching non-stop right up to September 30, when their season abruptly ended?

They’ll add a bat or two.  And probably move a player most of us never though of moving, like Contreras or Abreu…

How about that power offense in 2004?

#1 wRC+

#1 Runs

It wasn't the offense that failed them in 1986. Maybe you are just misremembering it?

The guy has had two injuries in his career so far.  Hes not like Mayer, who got hurt every season in the minors.

I said at the very beginning that the hand issue was a problem and that he needed surgery. Seems like rest didn't fix it!

I like Duran and wish hi,m luck on whatever team he plays for next year as long as it isn't Boston, this offense needs professional hitters instead of a bunch of has beens injury prone utility players because they are cheap

Pitchers are throwing velo more and more every year. They can't stack the offense with guys that can't hit it. Duran needs to go for sure (-15 RV vs 4 seamers).

Dont assume hes your superstar until he proves you otherwise.  Hes lost that.

This is the point I was trying to make yesterday.  I never said that I didnt think we had a chance.  All I said was win, lose but show some offense despite losing, or realize we need to get hitters.

And people immediately started planting excuses for why even if we dont hit, we dont need hitters.  Or have nowhere to put them.  And Im just like come on.

Everyone on the ground was like we are set up perfect for B-b-b-b-bregman and Alonso.  But the same people who told us noooooo, we dont want them.  The same ones who fived that Bregman, Alonso, and Devers are all on other teams - the ones who told us we didnt need those guys....Are back, and they will go to any lengths necessary to convince us they were right and we are dumb and spoiled.

Like how they are telling us that Crochets injury is the reason why we couldnt hit in the playoffs last year, finished 23rd in offense this year, and cant hit in the playoffs this year.  And they are also telling us that from a positional player standpoint, we are historically set up.....And that our needs this offseason is starting pitching and relief pitching....And as long as we are 15th in OBP next year, it doesnt matter if we are 25th in runs.....

Everyone that hit last night:

Roman - still injured

Duran - bad

Sogard - bench guy

Monasterio - bench guy

Story - typically IL, horrible swing decisions when healthy

Durbin - can't really hit, fine enough for bottom of the order

Rafaela - good glove, fine bottom third bat

Abreu - streaky, on a cold stretch right now

Contreras - power, but doesn't know the k zone at all, has no clue where it is

Adley - fine for a catcher

Just not a recipe for success this fall. I still contend: fix Roman situation (surgery or trade), move Duran, Arias to 2b, Mead to DH (or better), Elly to SS. They need to figure out who the long term guys are and make that the team. Cut bait on everyone else even if there is 1-2 years of control.

Correct.  We cant just be fine with average or this will keep happening.

I do, too. I just don't see him as helping this team, going forward. If he was going to make $4-6M on his arb, that would be okay, but $7-9M is too much for a tight-fisted owner's budget. I know $2-4M doesn't seem like much, but that could be the next T Guerrero. Jones and White.

Since Jones and White are out of options, and Anthony and Yoshida can play LF, we'll have enough OF'ers for 2027. The DH position looks like the best slot to upgrade our offense, so slotting Anthony in LF and maybe trading Yoshida could be the best plan. That plan would mean Duran is on the bench.

It's one thing signing a guy like IKF for $6M to be a utility infielders, but $8-9M for a 4th OF'er when we already have White, Jones and maybe Yoshida just doesn't seem like a shrewd budget choice. Yoshida could also be a decnet FT DH in 2027, despite the aging and injury issues.

Here's the rub: if Duran is not worth $8-9M, how can we sign him and trade him without adding money? It would make more sense to non tender him or sign him at $6M/1 ir $11M/2 before non tendering him. (Then, maybe trade him.) I'm not sure that is likely either.

Further complicating the DH-LF situation is the fact that we have Story-Mead-Arias at middle infield, which could easily help fill the DH slot. With Sogard, Seigler, Monasterio & Cheng as middle infield depth, using Story or Mead at DH makes even more sense. That would put more of a squeeze on Duran's usefulness for 2027.

Ideally, Brez could find a way to trade two from Yoshida, Duran and Story. Maybe we trade Jones or White, if we keep Duran. This is much easier said than done, even if we pay big chunks of salary owed. It might be easier with less money owed now, but Yoshida's injury and Story's age might offset the less money aspect of these trade options.

Let's say we trade Duran for a AAA SP'er depth piece. We trade Story + $18M for a RP'er. We trade Yoshida +$14M for another RP'er. We'd gain some pitching depth we lost with the recent trades, and we'd be left with everyday options like this:

C: Rutschman & Wong/Gasper/JoGarcia

1B: Contreras & Sogard/Romy/Casas/Gasper

2B: Mead & Sogard/Seigler/Monasterio/Cheng/Rodgers/Romero

3B: Durbin & Sogard/Eaton/Monasterio/ Romero

SS: Arias & Monasterio/Cheng/Sogard

LF: Anthony & Jones/White/Campbell/Castro

CF: Rafaela & White/Eaton/Ward

RF: Abreu & White/Eaton/Campbell/Gonzales

DH: ___FA____ & Campbell/Gasper/Romy/Casas/Gonzales/JoGarcia/Brannon

I have no use for Casas but if he can't be productively moved on, let him play 1B or DH at WooSox until Wilson leans over the plate one more time

what is the status with Casas anyway??   Had totally forgotten about him .

Injured. Multiple injuries. Not really doing any baseball activities.

Story and Yoshida were both abominable signings.  The only times they let Bloom spend on free agents and he whiffed twice.

He could hoard prospects like a greedy dragon and churn the bottom of the 40 man, but he did not know how to build a 26 man roster.

Or just fixing Anthony's messed up hand.

LF - Anthony replaces Duran, or consider trading Anthony in a package for a real middle of the order bat

DH - Mead replaces Masa

2B - Story replaces the carousel

C - Adley full year replaces Narvaez, find better backup

SS - Arias replaces Story

Fixed it for you.

They aren't moving Story off SS. It's more likely they move him off the 40 man.

Big difference between assuming he’s a superstar and assuming two injuries are not the historical norm…

Only to the 60 day IL to open a 40 man spot for Arias.

I like the idea of Story at 2b, but don’t consider it likely…

That was so long ago.  When they did try to do that, it looked like a good idea…

Right now, the hand injury is the norm until he shows he's healthy and productive again.

Story was PR signing if I ever saw one.  Not signed until March 23, only days before the season began…

Depends how bad it is.  Is he out of the lineup today?

Not sure it was even a PR signing as it didn't impress anyone. I think they thought he was a good deal at the time and would slide in as an easy replacement for Xander who they weren't going to re-sign. If they really thought it was a PR move, it was an even bigger swing and a miss.

If he was hurt enough to leave midgame and then within a few minutes of the game being over in order to not field questions, I think he's done for the year.

It was made at the last minute and still went 6 guaranteed years.  It looked to me like they were screaming  “See!! We’re spending money!! We’re really not going to work on a Tampa budget!!”…

It’s possible.  Leaving midgame didn’t strike me as the death knell.  And neither does not answering questions.  But there is enough there to make one wonder.

If he is done, activate Mead?
