And? He fetched 2 top 100 MLB prospects. The equivalent of us giving up Eyanson and Gonzalez right now. Jeffers is a rental, yes, but he could be the only well above avg C available, with numerous teams in need of one. If anyone thinks we are getting Jeffers without a mininum of one of our top 3-6 guys and probably another top 12 guy, I say they are dreaming.

For the record, I would be more than happy to eat my words on this. I’m not anti-Jeffers, just anti getting into a bidding war with multiple teams on him, when I believe there are more prudent options out there.

No, Duran did NOT fetch two top 100 prospects last year.  Tait was ranked 90-100.  Abel was not ranked.

And Duran was NOT even a rental.  He’s not a free agent for two more years…

Per MLB.com…

“Trade Return Details

  • Philadelphia Phillies received: RHP Jhoan Durán (noted for his 100 mph fastball and high-leverage bullpen dominance).
  •
  • Minnesota Twins received: C Eduardo Tait (MLB No. 56 prospect at the time) and RHP Mick Abel(MLB No. 92 prospect). [1, 2]

For 3 years of Duran.  Not really a good comp. Jeffers is a free agent In November

After the Mead deal we don’t have much to deal if there is interest in keeping Arias which i think they should.  I would be surprised if any substantial deals for us get done.

Huh? I never said they were a good comp. You brought up Duran, not me. I’m not saying Jeffers is worth Eyanson and Gonzalez, but that IS the comp of what Philly paid for Duran.
I’m saying to OUTBID the Yankees, Rays and Dodgers, among others, Jeffers price will be far above what he is worth. Love how you just ignored the part where I just proved you dead wrong, too. Lmao

So I ask, again, what do you think it will cost us, specifically, to land Jeffers?

Yeah, hope that Monasterio stays hot or IKF gets healthy, dont think they will call up arias, but maybe.  I dont hate it.

If we get the pre-injury IKF, and if Monasterio keeps up even close to this pace, then that's my SS platoon.  I wouldn't consider Story or an outsider.

Springer is 36 and less than a year removed from 32 dingers and a .959 OPS. He has championship pedigree. And we shouldn’t need to give up anyone that we should be too worried about giving up in the division.
Bleday is decent, but not a great track record, and Cincy has no huge motivation to move him so would likely cost us a slight overpayment.

Springer is ancient, but the recency factor comes into play.  If he's been playing well for a month, there is a pretty good chance he can play good for another 2 months.

Bleday is a lefty, and with 2+ years of control, he would cost a fair amount.

Springer and Sonny Gray are nearly the exact same age. Springer is currently healthy and hitting the ball well. As a rental, his age is entirely irrelevant. The only thing that really matters is what he would cost us.

Not sure why you brought up Lowe then. lol I’m trying to talk about realistic scenarios.
Again, for the same price, I might take Jeffers. But I disagree they are anywhere near the same price.
To me Springer would cost us no more than say a Valera and Romero type of package, or something in that range. They might even be interested Mayer. If our offer for Jeffers is Valera and Romero, the Yanks or Rays can beat that easy, and will thank us for not driving the price up higher.
What do you honestly think Jeffers would cost us?
And sure, get Gleyber too, for another mid level prospect. He should cost less than any of them.

I think Springer would get more than Jeffers and G Torres. I could be wrong.

I mentioned B Lowe because I really think he fits our positional, power and LHB needs. I'm not 100% sure PIT is not selling. I'm fine with not talking about him.

I'm a huge Valera fan, but I think your suggested off type is about on point. Maybe Azocar, Gonzales or Godbout might be demanded instead of Valera.

I've always felt like the best way to improve the team is to identify the weakest 2-3 areas and look to upgrade as many as you can. I may be the only one confident that Romy filling the DH/2B slot vs LHPs, and despite all my calls to trade Yoshida, he's an okay DH vs RHPs. I'd be fine with upgrading DH and or LF, in case Anthony does not return, but I doubt we make 3 moves, let alone 4, and these are my top 3 moves in order of highest need:

1. Pitcher

2. Catcher

3. Short Stop

4. 2B or DH/LF

I'm not trying to say I'm an expert and my top 3 is better than yours, and I get the idea that "BIG BAT" kinda trumps all positional needs, but the fact is we have 2-3, maybe 4,  high positional needs, and I feel we can get a big enough bat at one of those slots and actually improve one of our worst positions, not our 4th or 5th worst.

The seasonal stats show our DH has sucked. The last 5-6 weeks show it's not a very high need area.

Bleday walks in November.  Thats their motivation.  Bleday also bats left-handed, which Boston probably needs more…

That’s all totally fair. I’m prepared to be wrong on my assessments. If Springer costs more than Jeffers, than ofc you go Jeffers. I just don’t see how that could be. Yanks and Rays aren’t going to just let us have him without a fight, Yanks C duo is worse than ours. And Rays are rumoured to want him as well. I just don’t see the same competition for Springer, but again I could wrong. I’d be surprised if we had to include Gonzalez or Azocar for him. Maybe Godbout which I’d be fine with. Him and Holobets maybe?

One more fun stat of Springer’s to consider. He owns a career .947 OPS at Fenway.

Walks where? Spring training for the Reds? Do you even look things up before posting? Google is your friend. He is under team control for a few more years.

That's one of the things I like most.  When TO gives up, I think Springer goes cheaply.  His skill is probably not highly prized (Philly maybe).  Anytime a player is more important to us than to anyone else, they become a relative bargain.  So if he hacks it up, we only lose a mediocre prospect (who immediately becomes the RSN favorite player) and a few $$$.

Just in general, while I have no objection to big moves, I believe smaller, more strategic moves, will serve us better in the long-run.

Springer pulls the ball, but he'd only be a platoon DH. Is he an upgrade over Jones or Romy? At least they can play the field.

If Romy goes back to being a platoon 2B, then Springer becomes a platoon DH, and insurance for LF.

That's more or less what I've been saying. But people trying to tell me that he's gonna cost more than Jeffers.

Yes, he is a clear upgrade over both those guys, imo. Why would he be a platoon? His career OPS vs righties is ,820...

He would not platoon. He's even .809 v R since 2024, although this season is under .700.

What a Springer deal might do is push Yoshida to LF take Duran's place and Romy to platoon with Seigler at 2B. That should help both positions improve their OPS, but not the defense.

I was going to say that he's not the same player as he once was an reference his OPS vs RHP the last several years but Springer has reverse splits.  He's better vs. RHP than he is against LHP.  Or at least the last several years he has been.  Except for this season, he has a .687 vs RHP and a .804 vs. LHP.

The idea of Yoshida in LF scares me, but IMO Duran is toast. I hope they can find a taker for him. He may be one of those perfect change of scenery guys. I doubt we get anything of value back. What a shame.

So much talent, but the loose screws messed him up, badly.

what is our infield situation right now?

1B Contreras (.945) 1ST IN AL

3B Durbin (.704) 7TH IN AL BIG CLIMB LAST MONTH

SS Monasterio (.774) 12TH IN AL AS A TEAM

2B Seigler (.743) 15TH IN AL AS A TEAM

LF Duran (.589) 14TH IN AL

CF/RF Gold Gloves (.768 & .754)

DH Yoshida (.716) 12TH IN AL

CC Team (.626) LAST IN AL

Looks to me like we need a hitting left fielder.

Catching is dead last, 2B is dead last, DH is 12th in AL Absolutely Unacceptable for a team that plays in Fenway half the time. Left field is 14th in AL.

And you say Arias can't help this team. How can he do worse?

Marcelo Mayer/Anthony Eyanson/Harold Rivas to LA for Zach Neto

I'd pass. Neto is the most overrated "big" name out there this deadline, imho. His D is sus and he is a .750 guy. that can hit a few HR's. I wouldn't mind him for the right price but not for Arias or Eyanson. I might consider Witherspoon, Mayer, Rivas.

Agreed. No need to platoon him at DH. And I'm willing to toss this years overall stats out the window on him. Monster year just last season. Started the year with a significantly decreased bat speed for some reason but as it got up to his normal levels, he started getting hot. Proven playoff performer. Winning mentality. Huge numbers over his career at Fenway. Can still steal some bases. No brainer to me if the price is within reason.

Most of that has nothing to do with Arias.  The Sox are not promoting their star infield SS prospect because Duran and Narvaez are struggling.

That said, I’d rather give Arias a chance than deal for Neto or Abrams…

Exactly. Yoshi splits with Jones and backs up Springer. The only loss on D is because we are benching or trading Duran, which everyone wants anyway. Big net positive if you ask me.

Craig keeps ignoring me, but the Sox have a leadoff type LF in Worcester with a .377 OBP this year.  What’s a couple games gonna hurt?  Sox don’t even have to DFA anyone to get him on the 40 man. (I mean, Brett Harris has a couple PA for Boston this year.  Exactly what did he do to get them?.  And Braiden can’t get a shot?)

Jays have a lot of question marks in the outfield next year with Varsho likely gone. They might take a flyer on him. Duran and Mayer for Springer and Max Scherzer? Who says no? Pair Mad Max with Bello as a tandem.
