Exactly. Yoshi splits with Jones and backs up Springer. The only loss on D is because we are benching or trading Duran, which everyone wants anyway. Big net positive if you ask me.

Romy at 2B is no defensive upgrade.

Jays have a lot of question marks in the outfield next year with Varsho likely gone. They might take a flyer on him. Duran and Mayer for Springer and Max Scherzer? Who says no? Pair Mad Max with Bello as a tandem.

I'd rather not take Scherzer. He's 94 with a 9 point 4 ERA.

I'm fine with Springer, and maybe I'm wrong about his asking price, but I like other names better.

If we dump Duran, then there is some room for Yoshida in LF. He's not our worst hitter by far and would be an upgrade over Duran in LF. (PLatoon w Jones.)

I never said he was. Isn’t Siegler/Romy our current 2B pairing? Am I missing something?

Scherzer I thought could be an interesting throw-in to open games for Bello and pitch 2 or 3 innings tops And be a strong presence in the clubhouse. I’m certainly not dying for him nor would I expect a lot from him. His Era looks bad after a tough start and being injured most of the year, but I still see some a little value there.

Either way, I’m leaning towards Brady Singer as my top SP target as far as bang for your buck.

Catching is dead last, 2B is dead last, DH is 12th in AL Absolutely Unacceptable for a team that plays in Fenway half the time. Left field is 14th in AL.

Split sOPS+
as C 84
as 1B 134
as 2B 78
as 3B 104
as SS 89
as LF 77
as CF 109
as RF 105
as DH 81

That's how we compare to the MLB.  Monasterio and Yoshida have been hitting over the past 28 days, so it feels like SS and DH are accounted for.  Catcher is a position I hesitate to change.  Mead's injury hurt our chance to upgrade 2B, but between Story, Romy, IKF and Seigler, I think we can resolve this internally.

LF is where need to use our resources, imho.

Springer is not worth Mayer.  Duran might just have to go, in which case, I'm not sure we are getting much more than a fill-in.  But Duran/Springer is a decent bet for TO.

I didn't mean it as a criticism, but you said the only loss on D was Duran in LF being replaced.

BTW, Romy has only played 2B five times, this year. His main role was DH platoon with Yoshida.

He has played 2B more recently, as Monasterio plays SS all the time, so your point it correct.

I'm basically with you on this, except if the best hitter we can get is better suited to DH, I am fine with Masa in LF. The only wrinkle is that there are not a lot of great rental options. Are we open to someone longer term? Which would pretty much lock RA into DH when he returns and past this season. In which case we better hope Mead can play a proficient 2B. But if that is the route, I think Heliot Ramos is an intriguing option. His metrics show that Oracle park is really suppressing his numbers.

Eh, maybe not. I was never that high on Mayer to begin with. Now I'm pretty much over him. Can he still be a decent player? Sure. But what do we think his ceiling is at this point? And where does he fit into our future? Maybe 2B still if Mead sucks and has to be moved to elsewhere, but right now I think we're penciling in Mead and Arias up the middle. We also have Godbout coming along as well. Mayer is 100% expendable for me. If the Jays wanted him instead of some younger prospects, he's gone and I wouldn't think twice. Maybe that's just me.

I didn't take it critically just genuinely confused. lol Are you saying that Romy has to play 2B more if we got a full time DH? Romy has played like absolute ass this year. He's entitled to nothing. He's lucky if we let him sit on the bench behind Siegler and not send him down. Mead also avoided surgery and is projected(yeah, I know🤣) to be back this season, so he could still factor in.

I have some bias. I'm a huge Romy fan and want him in every line-up vs LHPs.

It made sense for him to platoon with Yoshida at DH, so if we get Springer and bench/trade Duran, I see Springer as the FT DH, Yoshida-Jones in LF and Seigler-Romy at 2B. Romy will no longer DH, unless Springer gets a day off.

I'm fine with this idea, but Springer FT probably means Romy plays a little more at 2B.

Maybe everything changes when and if IKF, Mead, Story or Mayer ever come back.

Hence my call for a SS and or Catcher, but LF/DH seems to be getting all the talk. I do see a great benefit in replacing Duran.

IMO, these players should be benched, traded or demoted:

OPS since May 27th/ Season OPS

.514/.544 Narvaez

.589/.589 Duran

These guys should not be handed any FT role:

.523/.594 Mayer

.540/.547 Story

An interesting tidbit: Since Mayer and Story have been on the IL for so long, it doesn't seem like they are the leaders in innings played at 2B and SS:

2B: 342 Mayer, 245 Seigler, 185 IKF, 80 Monasterio, 58 Sogard, 44 Romy, 4 Mead.

SS: 340 Story, 230 Monasterio, 179 Mayer, 116 Cheng, 82 IKF, 11 Sogard

Mayer is still 7th in PAs, while Story has slipped to 10th. Monasterio is 20 behind Story, and Wong should pass Story in PAs soon (-13.)

My first thought was who would get more starts on the mound down the stretch: Scherzer or Springer.

If it's Max, then how many times would he have to allow umps to inspect his hands, glove and cap before he strains a wrist and has to miss time, before the Sox put him on the 800-day IL for an amputated fingernail?

Oh damn, didn't mean to insult ya boy. haha. But yeah, he's ass, sorry. 😅
The only thing he is good for is hitting lefties, and he hasn't been able to do that all season. He's done nothing to earn more AB's. When he's hitting lefties he has value, but he's not. So imo nothing changes at 2B by getting Springer. Siegler is my everyday 2B either way until we get help from the IR or Romy shows a pulse.

lol. I know he's old af. My thinking was worst case ontario he makes a nice player coach if he gets a blister. Best case, he finds enough in the tank for one last playoff push, and he can be the opener Bello seems to require to remember how to pitch. I would still target another a real SP.

Romy was on the IL almost all year, so I'll cut him some more slack, but this is a ring run we are in, so he better start hitting soon, or he might get demoted for IKF.

Seigler has been earning a FT job and is a switch hitter, but let's be fair. If we are going to put Romy on notice for his splits, we need to be honest about Seigler, too:

.652 v L in 2026 (.691 career)

Romy is at ,618, now, but his last few years should carry some weight. (Romy even did pretty well vs RHPs, last year.

.718 in 198 PAs

Seigler is .647 career vs RHPs (159 PAs) and not much better than Romy's 2025 number vs RHPs:

.743 to .718.

I love Seigler's defense. I'm liking what I see and would keep rolling with him FT at 2B for a while. A FT DH add might force Romy to 2B vs LHPs, but it would still be Seigler starting about 70% of the games and coming in on D or to PH.

I'm all for adding a pitcher- even an older one or expensive one or both.

I just want one who is pitching well. I don't want to trade for someone we need to hope he turns around his 2026 season post-trade.

I'm tired of DMay, Paxton & Brad Peacock.

That's fair. If he had a longer track record I would cut him some more slack. But with less 400 AB's in his career vs lefties, for me it's more "what have ya done for me lately" than a more seasoned vet.
Siegler is outperforming him this season by every metric from, both sides of the plate, and plays a better D, Like I said, until Romy earns his role, he can sit on the bench.

Yeah, I am definitely not willing to die on the Mad Max hill. lmao. Just thought he would be a fun little gamble with zero risk. He would not negate us getting another SP. My realistic target is Brady Singer. He started slow but is an innings-eater and pitching great(2.37 era) over the last month.

I used to suggest getting Singer or Mitch Keller, but Singer's boat has passed.

5.17 FIP is a big YIKES!

Boston says no.  Or they better.  Mayer for two players with a combined age just weeks shy of 80?

Sam Kennedy denied those were stitches. He officially called them minor railroad track scratches that should clear up in a few days with Aquaphor.

Singer's 5.17 FIP

Singer: 4.35 ERA/5.17 FIP

Dustin May at the 2025 deadline: 4.85/4.79

I'm not dead against someone like Singer, but we'd essentially need him to improve for him to be much help. Of course, he'll cost less because he is not doing all that great.

Supposedly we were interested in Juan Soto. I know his contract runs longer than Anthony's. (this is in response to my original post about needing an upgrade on Left Field among other positions)

How about shipping Anthony and Duran to Mets for Soto?

Soto's $51M less Anthony's $16M would put the net luxury tax at $35M. The cash is $46M beginning 2030 for Soto. How much money would you ask in return to do this deal?

Soto's OPS is hovering .947 with 21 HR while you never know when Anthony's pinky will heal. He would fit in nicely in left field. DH in later years.

If the Mets give us $100M, would you do it? I can see Mets owner thinking twice about the $750M deal.

Any idea what we would have to give up to obtain Skubal?

I think Soto, Skubal and a closer would complete this team.
