Why would the Mets move Alvarez? Hes gotta rank like 20-something on their list of roster problems…

Because we will overpay to get him, and word is they love Narvaez (LOL)

Maybe we can look at it like this...

1. Keep Arias: trade for rental SS. Trade Arias: trade for a longer term SS. (maybe not in the same trade)

2. Trade for a rental catcher (Jeffers?) or a longer term one and include Narvaez or Wong in a trade.

3. Trade for a pitcher- most likely a rental, in hopes we have less injuries next year.

While agree a big bat is about as important as adding a pitcher, I don't see us swinging 3+ trades. We will NOT trade the farm away. Some, but not a big chunk of it. We need to be economical (thanks JH & Co.) and fill a positional need with a big bat.

We have too many DHs as it is. If Anthony returns, he's the DH, unless an OF'er needs a day off. Yoshida has been on of the teams best batters for over a month and is fine as a platoon DH. Romy ha sssucked out of the gate, but he's been one of MLB's best bats vs LHPs for 2+ years. A Yoshida-Romy platoon is not even the 3rd worst batting slot on the team, so why look there?

Now, one can argue Monasterio & Siegler have been doing pretty well as middle infielders over about the same period as Yoshida, but neither have longer periods of batting success as Masa & Romy. Wong is having a good year, but Narvaez has sucked big time, especially on offense.

Catcher, SS and 2B are way worse batting slots than DH.

Season:

.634 2B

.637 C

.650 SS

.672 DH

Last 28 Days C, 2B, SS, DH:

1.144 Monasterio

.839 Yoshida

.800 Sogard 5 PAs

.741 Cheng (demoted)

.667 Siegler

.618 Wong

.612 Romy

.558 Narvaez

I am mostly in agreement, but if the market is not there for those positions to get good value on someone, I would rather just get the best bat we can without giving up the farm. To me that is Springer. Trade Duran for a BP arm or prospect. If RA comes back he is LF. Yoshida to the bench. EZ.
In a world where there are deals that make sense, yes I would rather have a position of greater need. But who? Jeffers is going to be an expensive rental, and is not even a great catcher. Liam Hicks is probably the only guy I think is worth a shake up there, but depends what he costs.
I am not down for trading Arias for Neto. Maybe Lopez or Pena, but not if it takes multiple other good prospects. Monasterio has been very solid lately. Who is out there for a SS rental that is a clear upgrade? Plus, Story might be more likely to return before Roman, so we could still get help there. 2nd base there may be some more options. Maybe Casey Schmidt? But for me that would not negate adding a guy like Springer if the price is still right. His upside for a healthy playoff push is too much for me pass on.
If we are not making a big deal for an all-star type, I could easily see 3 or 4 lesser deals.

Jeffers should not cost more than Springer and is hitting better, so far. I'd rather upgrade our .650 catcher than our .685 DHs. Our DH position has been doing much better the last 4-6 weeks, too.

I've soured on Neto and his terrible SS defense, and since we have Mead for 2027>> moving Neto to 2B cause more issues.

.926 Abrams (may be worth the poor D for an OPS like this, but very costly)

.883 Andrew Vaughn

.877 Ty France

.872 Goodman (would take a huge offer to get)

.866 Pena (good on  D but injured a lot and just 1 more year of control)

.853 Lopez

(.851 Mead- Oooops)

.817 Arraez (rental)

.810 Soderstrom

.809 Bleday

.805 B Lowe (rental)

.803 N Lowe (rental)

.800 Witt (not happening)

.798 O'Hearn (might be better than Springer at DH)

.793 L Hicks (okay with me)

.785 C Schmidt

.781 F Alvarez (My top pick)

.775 G Torres

.765 Paredes

.764 Rutschman

.757 KMarte & Neto

.749 I Herrera

.728 Lindor

.719 Springer (Why assume he'll be great in the POs?)

I think you are off on Jeffers’ cost. Unless Goodman is truly available, you are going to have a bidding war for him as the next best catcher, with NYY, TB, and LAD among teams in the market. He could easily cost us 2 top 3-10 prospects to outbid those teams. Springer should cost us no more than 2 top 7-15 prospects, imo. Jeffers is hitting WAY above his career avg’s in a small sample size this year, and is not a great defensive catcher. Springer has a long track record of big hits in big games, is looking like himself after a very bad start. His bat speed was way down to begin the year, but is now back to last years levels, and lo and behold, is heating up over the last several weeks. No brainer for me.

I dont hate Springer, but I wouldnt mind like a gleybar torres for his ability to play 2b , as I see a decent chance that someone internal plays DH (Duran, Yoshida, Story)

I could go in that direction.  There is a chance Duran comes back to normal, but there is an equal chance he disappears completely.  If he disappears completely, then Jones becomes our primary LF.  Or he platoons in LF with Yoshida, and someone else DH's.  Both options are pretty weak.  Springer takes those two options out of play.  Even if Duran breaks out, Springer retains value at DH or giving Ceddanne and/or Abreu a day off.

With Story and IKF returning, I think we can cobble together SS and 2B.

I’m not enamoured with him, but what do you think he costs? My guess is more than I think he’s worth in terms of how much of an upgrade he is for us. He is a decent bat, but hasn’t proven to be able to get the most of his pitching staff. Not saying it’s his fault NYM’s rotation sucks, but they traded for a so-called ace who is now having a very down year. Hicks I like much more than him. Let’s not forget that Narvaez is still just in his 2nd year and was as good or better last year than Alvarez is now. Who’s to say he doesn’t pull a Durbin and finally get rolling.

I don’t see why one would rule out the other. In fact, if we got Gleyber, George, a solid #4-5 starter, and gave up less than it would take to get a Neto or something, I’d call that a great deadline.

Yeah, hope that Monasterio stays hot or IKF gets healthy, dont think they will call up arias, but maybe.  I dont hate it.

I agree with this, but after a long conversation with my Magic 8 Ball, we came to the conclusion that JJ Bleday was more likely than Springer,  and made more sense given the Sox performance vs RHP this year. (And because they’d rather prospect load the Reds over the Blue Jays.)

Also isn’t Springer like 60?  The guy has played 7 innings in the field this year; he might not be the defensive option you claim..

The thing about Arias is, if he struggles or doesn’t work out, you can undo it.  Send him back to Worcester.  “Just head west on the pike until you get to 146.”  Done.

You don’t get that with Gleyber.

I wouldn’t sneeze at any of these guys, but I don’t see any of them moving but France. And if you’re giving me the option of who I want in a big at bat in a game that counts, I’m taking Springer all day everyday over Ty France.

Jeffers might be expensive for a rental, but no one is giving up 2 of their op 10 prospects for him.  Minnesota got two top ten prospects last year for Jhoan Duran, but bear in mind

1. they were Phillies’ prospects and that farm was far from strong and further from deep.

2. Duran had a full extra season of control whereas Jeffers is a pure 2 month rental…

Gleybar is an upcoming FA on a selling team , who is like a 2.5 WAR guy, mostly offensive, and I think hed be quite cheap....Im not paying an amount in prospects where i cant cast him aside comfortably.

I could be wrong, but Yankees need a RH catcher way more than we do. You think they are going to just let us snag him for a couple of scrubs? Add in the Rays who have a deep system, and LAD sniffing around, and I think the price ends up being way more than it should be for him.

Springer is 36 and less than a year removed from 32 dingers and a .959 OPS. He has championship pedigree. And we shouldn’t need to give up anyone that we should be too worried about giving up in the division.
Bleday is decent, but not a great track record, and Cincy has no huge motivation to move him so would likely cost us a slight overpayment.

I've never been one to believe that "clutch hitting" is a repeatable skill.

I'm not trading for Springer based on a small sample size of great playoff hitting and heroics.

I'd rather have Jeffers or B Lowe, and I'm not sure they cost any more. They also upgrade positions of greater need than DH.

Springer will be 37 in September.

.719 OPS 2026 & .869 2025-2026 / .790 last 3 years/.772 last 4 years

Jeffers: Pretty similar

B Lowe (maybe PIT not selling)

.805/ .794/ .791/.786 (very steady)

HRs:

BLowe 53 in 999 PAs 2025-2026

Springer 44 in 930

I think we mainly disagree on the price of these guys. Sure, if the price is the same I might take the other guys. But Pitt looks like buyers, and are probably only trading Lowe for someone that helps them this year. As mentioned, Jeffers will be a hot commodity due to scarcity. You say you don’t want Springer just because of his “small sample of great playoff hitting and heroics”. But you wanna try to outbid the Yanks, Rays and Dodgers for a guy who his hitting almost .200 OPS points above his norm, in 160 AB’s this year. I’d rather buy low(if possible) on Springer and his almost .900 career playoff OPS in 83 games, then buy high on Jeffers 1/4 season breakout.

Who cares how old he is? He is healthy, hitting very well right now, and is a rental. We only need a few months out of him.

BLowe is likely not on the market.

Jeffers may be having a career year but he has been very consistent, unlike Springer. I could be wrong about him being cheaper than Springer in return prospects, but if they were the same cost, I'd take the catcher.

I'd rather have the cheaper G Torres than Springer.

I'm not sure how many other nonpitching rentals I'm even considering. Arraez? Meh.

Now, talk to me about multi year players and I'd want many over Springer, but all will be overpays to gross overpays.

Not sure why you brought up Lowe then. lol I’m trying to talk about realistic scenarios.
Again, for the same price, I might take Jeffers. But I disagree they are anywhere near the same price.
To me Springer would cost us no more than say a Valera and Romero type of package, or something in that range. They might even be interested Mayer. If our offer for Jeffers is Valera and Romero, the Yanks or Rays can beat that easy, and will thank us for not driving the price up higher.
What do you honestly think Jeffers would cost us?
And sure, get Gleyber too, for another mid level prospect. He should cost less than any of them.

And? He fetched 2 top 100 MLB prospects. The equivalent of us giving up Eyanson and Gonzalez right now. Jeffers is a rental, yes, but he could be the only well above avg C available, with numerous teams in need of one. If anyone thinks we are getting Jeffers without a mininum of one of our top 3-6 guys and probably another top 12 guy, I say they are dreaming.
