Why Mayer isn’t playing SS? Can someone explain me like a 10 yo, please?

He’s struggling at the plate.  So they probably didn’t want to pile position change on top of that as well…

I don’t see what this have to do to with putting Mayer at SS every time he plays. He is the best SS in the team in my book.

Our entire rotation, even without Crochet, is on a roll.

With all the losses piling up, it's been largely ignored, but yes indeed!

2.05 Tolle 5 GS/31 IP

2.44 Suarez 8 GS/44 IP

3.18 Gray 7 GS/ 34 IP

3.21 Early 9 GS/48 IP

Bello has allowed only 2 ER in his last 13.1 IP (1.35 ERA)

Such a shame this team has such good starting pitching and has gone from one of the worst defenses in baseball to one of the best and they still suck.  So relieved they didn't let that win get away last night, that would have been devastating. But the error was costly, I'm going to assume we have lost Chapman for today.

You’re here though?

I check the score from time to time but I am not going to waste much of my time watching loser bums try to play baseball. The fans have been screwed over by Henry and BresLOW. I sure hope they aren't selling out at Fenway any more. No one should be going there.

Maybe they think he is dealing with too much right now with his hitting issues.  Maybe they want him to stay at 2b because that’s where his future is.

There are lots of reasons to leave him there and most teams do similar.  Manny Machado is the best SS in San Diego but they never love him there when they have an injury…

Well said.

I really enjoy watching good defense and pitching, but this team's offense and mental mistakes make it hard to enjoy as much as I could be.

I'm sure the pitching will go through some tough stretches, and expecting this offense to pick up the slack appears to be fantasy.

I do think changing positions can be a distraction, but if he is clearly the best defensive SS on the team, which I'm not certain he is, then it does make sense.

Arias is likely 1.5 to 2 years away.

And he still might end up there.

While I agree with anyone who says Mayer should have been the SS a month ago, it’s also only been one game.  Maybe after a week of Monasterio at the position, Tracy decides it was not the best idea and he switches things up. It seems like most MLB managers don’t change players’ positions as wantonly as your average Little League coach..

Sadly, the plan is almost certainly going to be Story back to SS, at least for the rest of this season.

Changing managers doesn't look like it's changed that philosophy.

Story could be out 6-10 weeks.  And he might be a little better if he is no longer in pain…

The healthy Story was not good on D, last year.

If the idea is that he's better at 2B, then moving Mayer to SS, now, makes sense.

I doubt Tracy & Co. see it this way. Story will be back at SS, when he returns. Worse yet, he might be at SS for 2027, too.

I see very few teams change guys positions.  There are always some fringy guys that get moved around, but that's their role.  Most regulars have a position and they don't deviate.

It's not uncommon at ages 32-35 or older.

Even GG players change positions as they age.

Story's decline on defense is clear. His bat showed some life, last year, so he's going to be given a shot at a comeback, but it need not be at SS.

It will be, though. 99.9% chance.

I meant play multiple positions on a regular or even semi-regular basis.

If he’s out that long, they’ll move Mayer over.  If it’s a week they won’t.
