Ive got a friend who is a redskins/commanders fan.  In our group chat, hes the only fan....Rest of us are patriots guys (im not really into football, personally, its fourth for me by a lot out of basketball, baseball, hockey, football)....But im from providence and root for all home teams, so im pats fan by default.  But im always teasing my buddy cuz hes just always looking for any opening to talk about the commanders nad nobody cares.

Like Ill be talking about a friend of ours from back in teh day and he'll be like "that guy has a funny name.  You know who else has a funny name, the backup safety on teh commanders. You know, I really liked what the commanders did this draft" then he'll go on for a while."

And Im like are you just going to go on for a while about a football team that only you care about?

I got those vibes from harmony changing the convo to mariners players.

Assuming he was healthy, I thought he might be our 4 or 5, yes.

Thought Crawford might do something, too.

i really wasn't trying to poke the bear just pointing out another failed reclamation acquisition that failed miserably. I have lost count on how many of these we have tried.  But hey we're not cheap.

Suarez was available. I know he is so far having an off year but his career OPS+ is above average. Instead they signed another bum. Durbin sucks.

Durbin fit the payroll. The ONLY reason we got him. He's AWFUL.

As I’ve said many times DUBin was a cheap settle after losing out on Bregman, and then signing Ranger. They probably would have gone another way if they hadn’t planned on Bregman so much.

Given his plate discipline, contact rate and pull-happy tendencies, I can see why he was on the list.  He’s like Paredes, but either way less pop..,

He's not pulling the ball in the air this year. It's pull heavy, but all into the ground.

That information was not available at the time of the trade…

He asked about sandal, not sandoval!

Joe Montana was a QB

I know, thats why I said Joe Montainya

Joe Montainya was one of the hottest movie actors in the world for a year or two.  Then he settled into one of those crime shows.

Eaton on 40- Romero not.

Keeping all options open.

Why not I guess is my answer.

IMHO-

1-We were unlikely to do better, relative to cost.  Right now, Durbin has a 0.4 bWAR.  Bregman has a 0.6 at a cost of ~$30M.  Marte has a 0.3 at a cost of $18M and possibly Tolle and Early.  Paredes has a cost of $9M and probably Abreu, though we'd have likely gotten something else.  There really weren't many attractive options out there.

2-FWIW, I am not at all disappointed in Durbin.  His 0.4 is respectable for approximately 20% of the season.  And he has a 10/9 K/W in his past 22 games.  IMO, that's what leads to future success.

Eaton is a better offensive player, but much worse defensively. I think their scouting saw more in Durbin than what we're getting on the field. I think their internal metrics and projections aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Eaton is not as good an offensive player either.  He has 2 HRs in 240 ABs with a 70/18 K/W.  Extrapolated to 600 ABs, that's 5 HRs and a 175/45 K/W.  In 544 career ABs, Durbin has 12 HRs and a 66/40 K/W.  I don't think that's particularly close.

Personally I only care what’s going on today with DUBin, and what’s going on today is a Major League glove, and a Little League bat.

He doesn't have any ABs today.

Eugenio has a 219 tOPS+ at Fenway. Loves hitting here. If Masa wasn't on the squad, he would have been a fine DH. He's a much better hitter once it gets to July 1st too (July - Sept OPS over 815).

Shouldnt have let Masa's preference stop us.

If we even offered to pick up his salary, Krall would drive him to Boston himself.  I see no way he out-performs Duran going forward,

No way? You lack imagination.

Who signed the 1.3 bWAR 1Bman (second on team in bWAR) and 0.7 SPer (tied for best bWAR pitcher on the team?)

Hint: The same guy who "insulted" Bregman with an overpay offer and the same guy who didn't come close to signing Alonso, Schwarber and Cease.

You'd have preferred Bregman over Suarez + Durbin?

Fair enough.  But I feel strongly enough that I'd put a fair-sized wager on it.  Similar career OPS, with Duran being 5 years younger, having a much higher EV this year, being a 30 SB guy, and IMO, should be playing LF for us.

Posted

The thing about Duran is that he's had a history of ups and downs (granted small sample sizes inn MLB from '21-'22,) changing stance and batting approaches, dealing with defensive inconsistencies, and then he had 1 and half really good seasons (2023-2024) followed by a nice 2025 season but a clear drop off.

128 OPS+ '23-'24 (.832) 11.2 bWAR in 262 games (.04 per game)

117 OPS+ 2025 (.774) 4.7 bWAR in 157 games (.03 per game)

Repeating 2025 or just coming close would be fine, but I'm not sure it should have been projected as such.

I'd prefer Contreras, Suarez & Durbin over Bregman & Alonso.

Gray and Oviedo are still largely TBD, but I doubt Dobbins & Fitts would be doing much better.

(Harrison has started out okay.)

They should have traded (or DFA’d) the useless Masa to make room for a better player. Henry was too cheap to do the right thing..

He has company. IKF stinks too. There are others. All the while Henry is lying to our faces about his desire to present a competitive team. If he had just been honest and said that his top priority is to make the most money possible I could have respected him for his honesty.

I have no respect at all for him now.
