What's on second.

Acquisition?

They have said they want Mayer at 3b and Story at SS. Why they have already announced this is beyond me.

To let posters know -- no matter what NESN.com headlines say -- they really don't "like" Geno.

I wonder if it was initially to apply pressure to Bregman into signing because they thought he didn't have offers elsewhere. 😎

Pressure a Boras' client? I dunno; I'm still in shock how much they paid instead to a pitcher whose average fastball is 90 mph.

And I preferred Suarez over Framber and Cease. But the Red Sox -- who in the past year drafted or signed dozens of pitchers 6'6 with extensions?!?!?!

Btw: Houck walked past me on Lansdowne St last week and he is gigantic. I know he's listed as 6-5, 225 but he looked closer to 250 or 260 (maybe it was his big winter coat).

Who cares?  Remember when they needed a shortstop and announced Pedroia was a candidate?  It’s possible these are simply negotiation tactics.  “Hey, we don’t NEED Isaac Paredes. We are perfectly willing to let Mayer play third again.  So slow down those demands, Cowboy.”

If they were really already committed to Mayer at third, why am I still seeing Paredes rumors?

Pressure BorASS? It seems like the first offer to Bregman was not to his liking at all, and he was a little perturbed at Brez, and it stayed that way until the end when the Red Sox upped their offer, which was to late, and not good enough anyway" like I mentioned before the Red Sox offer to Ranger PDV was higher than Bregman’s. Bregman was plan A, and Brez botched it from the beginning IMO.

Cut him some slack.  He was just at Legal Seafood.  That clam chowder has a way of putting on those winter pounds…

That's the first thing I thought of.  Even if you're 90% sure it is a bluff, you still have to give a 10% weight in your discussion.

Is it really a bluff?

I don’t think the Sox will be too disheartened if they’re “stuck” with Marcelo Mayer at 3b again…

It will depend on who is at 2b.

Who's on second, I Don't Know's on third -- unless he stays healthy for the entire season for the first time in his pro career.

Paredes is OK, but certainly not in the *star* category of players like Schwarber or Alonso. It would be just more of the same. Yes, he would likely improve the team a little, but it’s the cheap "Henry" way out.

And that’s the problem.  In their search for a 2b/3b, why did the Sox bypass such clear cut star talents like Schwarber and Alonso?  It’s like Henry doesn’t want to win…

I don’t think they will be disappointed to have Mayer at 3b even in that case.  They might be disappointed with settling for Player X at 2b, however…

I think Henry wouldn't MIND winning, but his top priority is making more money. Thats pretty clear. While I admit that this is his right as principal owner the fans have to adopt realistic expectations with Henry as owner: we will not win another ring with the current situation in place.

John Henry does have 5 World Series rings.  Even the crew out in LA cannot make that claim.  I mean, they can, but not without lying.

Schwarber would have been nice.  Alonso was and always will be a questionable fit.  They have added Gray, Suarez, Contreras and are still going.  These are NOT just cheap filler talents like Franchy.  They are actually pursuing good players…

That was in reference to us pursuing Suarez.  Trying to keep Houston from squeezing us on Paredes.

The are pursuing players at a level below top notch. Sometimes even less. Think "Buehler", for example. Yes Henry has five rings but he seems quite satisfied with them. The fans are not. We deserve a team that competes for a ring nearly every year, and unfortunately that requires a new owner.

He is very unlikely to be caught during his lifetime.

There are still stars available:

Walker Buehler

Gary Sanchez

Jason Heyward

Nestor Cortes

Michael Conforto

Tony Gonsolin

David Robertson

Craig Kimbrel

Marcus Stroman

DJ LeMahieu

Carlos Santana

Max Scherzer

Is Craig dumb? Doesn't he want to win? These guys are All Stars. Some are MVP and CY candidates. WTH?

Isn't it all kind of a mute point? If they trade for a 3B then Mayer is at 2nd.  If they trade for a 2B then Mayer is on 3B.

Mayer is in the infield next year regardless.

Most likely yes, but even then Mayer has a lot of proven to do with the bat, and being able to stay on the field.

I mean, Gary Sánchez has never shown he can’t play 2b.  What’s wrong with Craig?

The point was Cora spoke too quickly commiting Mayer as his 3b.  It’s really no big deal…

I don’t think Cora has committed to Mayer at 3B at all. It was just said the Red Sox would rather have Mayer play 3B than 2B.

Well, it's always easier to catch sometime during their deathtime (they don't move as fast).

Speaking of rings, what newly appointed Red Sox Hall of Famer actually won as many World Series rings on the field as David Ortiz?

Did you know that Florence Griffith-Joyner holds that women's 100m sprint record? She has held it since 1988. Its also unlikely to be caught.

Who cares what the FLOPS have done in the past. Resting on past achievements does nothing for the present. This team could compete nearly every year for a ring with a decent owner that is not a tightwad.

Nobody is going to catch Rickey Hendersons sb record, but that doesnt mean that hes an elite player in 2026.

Exactly! No one cares much about the rings the team has won with Henry as owner. Baseball is very much a
"what have you done for me lately" sport, like most sports. We all know what the Cheapskate has done for the team lately, unfortunately.
