536 career OPS vs Yankees.

I bet Campbell would have been a better option against these 2 lefties.

If they are patience against Rodon especially vs his breaking balls they will make him throw a lot of pitches and the will bring their BP early, and there is where we are going to have a chance. He often starts strong but by the fourth inning he begins to lack of command and even control.

I hear you, but Duran has a pretty good WAR in part because he's pretty good in LF.  Didn't he make an over the shoulder catch last night and throw a Yankee out at 2b?

Also, with Eaton in RF and Ref as DH, who's left for LF?  Yoshida.  His OPS vs lefties is .500.  Duran's is .600.

I would play Eaton, Rafaela, and Refsnyder in the outfield.  Would use Masataka as DH to take advantage of his hot streak.

Can he hit LHP?

I'd go like yesterday. Rodon is way inferior pitcher than Fried. I only would leadoff with Rommy instead Refsnayder.

Which is why I would have opened with Whitlock.

How does that change anything with RHP Whitlock?

I wondered about Masa hitting Fried ONLY because Fried has a reverse split and pitches worse against LHB.

Nah, the cutter, 4 seam and sinker are all too fast for Campbell to do damage on. Plus, I don't want Campbell's glove negatively affecting the game.

Splits only tell part of a story. What a batter does head to head with the pitcher is what’s Most important.

He proved he could hit and yeah then he regressed but I bet he learned a bit in AAA to be at least good enough a better bet than Duran vs LHP. We'll never know for sure though.

Said that IMO guys like Campbell, who have a legit talent, have nothing else to learn or prove in AAA. He will always hit 800+ at the end of the day there. What he needs is to face MLB pitchers as much as possible. It may take a year or two to adjust and I can live with that. There's a reason they extended him. If he turns into another Bobby Dalbec, it's baseball. Some prospects pan out (actually very few) and some not. Look what happened to Duran. MLB experience helped him to be what he is now. I want to see if Campbell has that resilience. Talent gives you the floor and character the ceiling.

Most of these guys don't have enough history with the pitchers for the head to head sample to matter.

Campbell will get a second chance. I'm not sure it should happen during the playoffs though. I'm fine if they give him a bench spot next season after he's had a chance to heal and decompress.

2-16 against Rodon, and 0-10 with 5 K’s against Fried is good enough for me concerning Duran.

Yeah there's no way they call him up now nor put him instead Duran in a situation like this. That was only my bold take/suggestion.

... and yeah... they extended so I bet they want him to play in the future.

Just like I don’t believe the Red Sox gave that contract to RAF Man to be a utility guy I don’t believe the Red Sox gave that contract to Campbell to be a bench guy.

I wanted Romy 1st and Ref 4th last night, too -- Gonzo is a faster runner, so it makes more sense in front of top run producers Story and Bregman, right?

But then, Cora pinch-hit Yoshida for DH Ref, and I realized... that was planned pregame: facing a righty reliever with speed guys from the bottom of the order on base. By the time the clean-up spot came up, it may have been too late.

Bench guy for '26. Starter in '27.

I see potential too, but I'm darned if I wanted him back on the Sox this season.  He was, in a word, a loser at the plate and in the field.   He flat cannot compete with the guys who got the Sox to the postseason and to that huge win last night.

I honestly don't see a slot for him next year either.  If he proves me wrong, I'll be delighted.

So who thinks the Sox will be uptight and mistake prone today ?  Not me, these guys are loose as can be and have nothing to lose . Kevin Millar kind of loose.   Sox are playing with house money.

Bello is the one guy that I think succumbs to pressure so he needs to keep hold of himself and not panic .

Red Sox 2025 season cannot end today, but the Yankees can fail here.

The NYY'ers are the ones whose sphincters are grabbing pine splinters . Their entire season is down to one game

Who says he doesn't have anything to learn in AAA?  The book is not closed on him - at all - but basically what happened is that he hit adversity for the first time in his career.  We will see how he bounces back.  If it is next spring, it is what it is.

Yeah - I'm worried.  At the same time, Crochet did his job and gave Cora a chance to use a quick hook as necessary.  I don't think Bello is going to see any more than 2 trips to the order.
