Let’s rank deadline needs.  Some choices may negate other choices and aren’t necessary connected at all but my list of priority is:

elite starter.

relief pitcher

catcher

starter depth

high end reliever

2nd baseman

1st baseman

Reliever is a must

1B bat would be nice

Really not sure if they're going after any starters - probably too pricey

I think they'll get a low end starter at the very least. Can probably get a 5th starter type for a low level prospect.

1. A solid #2 SP'er (at worst a solid #3.)

2. A solid set-up man that could maybe close, when Chapman is unavailable or gets injured (gasp.)

3. 1B- A 2 month rental is fine. Do not trade a top prospect for a rental, and certainly not a 1B rental. Let's remember: Toro .915 first 27 games/.569 last 28 games. (.379 last 8 games.)

4. Back-up catcher (optional)

This would be my priority list also

Starting pitcher.

Home run hitter who actually plays first base.

The Cubs just kicked the Red Sox ass the first two games back with starting pitching and power. One run allowed, 10 runs scored -- eight on HRs.

Raffy's recent attitude won't be missed in Boston, but the instant offense he can provide needs to be replaced...

We all know the inconsistencies of the Sox' runs per-game, and the imbalance at times that is exploited without a legitimate longball threat. The two best teams in the National League -- Chicago and LA -- are also tied for the lead in homers.

Rentals:

Is .681 Santana (11 HRs) enough?

.767 Hoskins (12 HRs)?

.813 Naylor (11 HR)? At what cost?

.892 Alonso (21 HRs) has a $24M player option and would be very costly to obtain.

they should have resigned Schwarber. and his contract, while being slightly more per year, is far less in overall value.

If I'm the owner this is what I would be demanding.

Any minor league positional player is tradeable.

I would tell Bres to keep all the potential starting, Peyton Tolle being at the top of the list.

Our window of opportunity is pretty well taken care of at position players. We have Narvaez, Campbell, Rafaela, Mayer, Anthony, Abreu and Duran for few more years.

I loved what we've done the last two drafts, focusing on college pitching. The development of young pitchers should be where our focus should be. International draft can focus on positional players.

Getting a bona fide starting pitcher and bullpen arms will go long ways improving our prospects for getting into the playoffs.

A power hitting 1B wouldn't hurt either.

If we add a solid #2 SP'er, maybe we can get by without boosting the pen. We can roll the dice by hoping returning pitchers from the IL or converted SP'ers can be enough help.

SP1 Crochet

SP2 Ryan, Keller, or ____ (not a rental, PLEASE!)

SP3 Giolito

SP4 Bello

SP5 Fitts or Sandoval (The other goes to the pen)

Closer: Chapman

RP2: Whitlock

RP3: Wilson

RP4 Weissert

RP5 Bernardino

RP6 Alcala

RP7 Buehler

RP8 Sandoval or Fitts, Hicks, Houck, Murphy, I Campbell, Harrison, Criswell, Kelly, Guerrero

I really hate the idea of giving good prospects for a rental, and a 1Bman rental seems to make it even worse. If we can get one with Rule 5 borderline prospects and maybe a decent but blocked second tier prospect, okay, but I'm still against trading a top 8-9 prospects for a Naylor, Hoskins, ___ type. (Alonso, okay.)

As frustrating as our offense is at times, my top priority is a #2 or #3 starting pitcher.  Next would be a back end reliever, although our bullpen has been pretty good. Pitching depth is always a good thing.
