Buehler is going to have to pitch a SHO tonight. Not sure the Sox batters will help him out much. 😬

Warren's statcast:

Yanks offense has been in a funk this week, and Buehler owned them in the World Series last season. So it only makes sense that the Yanks will drop 8 runs on him in the first inning.

Yikes. Coming into the season I thought the Red Sox starting pitching would be a strength. Admittedly I haven't followed them too closely, so what's caused them to be this bad?

Houck blew up and was pulled from the rotation. Giolito has had a stretch where seemingly every other start is absolutely dogdoo. Bello started off the year hurt, again and hasn't really gotten his footing. They've had to rely too much on untested Fitts (when healthy) and Dobbins. Buehler has been inconsistent, but has been the best of the rest. The first inning has even been Crochet's bugaboo.

The bullpen has been better than advertised though!

It looks like Red Sox rank best in many of the categories shown, so that must mean  30 is the best in MLB.

On a serious note, this really confirms the oft commented note that Boston pitchers, despite elaborate pregame sessions are just not ready to go in the first.   Or their mentality doesn't kick in until they see balls flying off or over the walls

Will Warren is another one of those mediocre righthanders who don't throw especially hard. The kind of pitcher that the Sox hitters should be able to hit. I give the Sox a good chance of winning this one.

Like I said in another thread. As bad as the Red Sox played against the Angels it wouldn’t surprise me if the Red Sox took 2-3 against the Yankees this weekend.

He doesn't throw hard but all of his pitches move a lot. If he locates he's pretty tough to hit, as evidenced by his 11.9 Ks per 9 innings (for comparison, Crochet has 11.1 Ks per 9 innings).

Houck was supposed to be a decent #2, but he's looked like the "other" kind of number two, as in doo-doo.

We did seem to finally have rotation depth, even after trading away Priester, and the depth has done pretty well, except with the departed Newcomb. Dobbins at 4.06 and Fitts at 4.71 have done what could be expected from pitchers ranked 8th to 10th on the rotation depth chart in December.

Injuries have hit our rotation, as it always does. The Sox are not alone on this, and it's not really an excuse, for that reason, but we have seen these missed starts:

12 Sandoval (totally expected when signed)

12 Crawford (not sure when he returns)

5 Giolito (I wish it was 10-12 missed starts)

3 Buehler and Bello (and Houck, thankfully)

I still see our rotation as having hope, and it is one area we could see a legitimate hope for improvement.

Crochet is a CYA candidate.

Buehler is a legitimate hope.

Bello could be a nice #3 or solid #4.

We need 2 from Fitts, Dobbins and maybe Criswell to bridge us to Sandoval's, Crawford's or Houck's return. It's not a huge reach to think we can cobble together 2-3 good starters from these 6 pitchers.

We have better hope here than our infield, where all 4 slots have major issues.

Our pen has done better than expected and is top 5 in IP, so I'm not sure how long that holds up.

Our OF is our big plus and it has top depth, too.

I think the Sox lineup matches up pretty well with Warren. I wouldn't be surprised if they put a run or more on the board before the Bleacher Creatures finish their roll call.

Here's our rotation set as of today.

Buehler  GS 9 team record 6-3

Crochet GS 13 team record 7-6

Dobbins GS 7 team record 4-3

Bello GS 9- team record 5-4

Giolito GS 7 team record 4-3

Total GS 45 team record 26-19

Fitts (5) Houck (9) and Newcomb (5) combined for 4-15 team record.

Interesting that despite our starter issues, we're not terrible in terms of quality starts. Not supporting good pitching by Crochet and losing record in one run losses are main reasons for our losing record.(along with defense, striking out, not playing #1 prospect in the country, etc, etc, etc)

Rays (32), Royals (31), Astros (29), Rangers (25), Sox (24), Angels (24), Yankees (23), Mariners (23), Jays (21), White Sox (20), Tigers (20), Orioles (19), Twins (18), Athletics (18) and Guardians (14).

I was surprised too. They are second in the league in runs scored behind the Yankees and we are third.

Only 5 teams in AL has negative one run games.

4-16 White Sox

6-17 Red Sox

9-13 Rangers

7-10 Athletics

7-9 Twins

The Angels are the best at 10-4.

In AL East, no one other than the Sox has a losing record in one run games, and has a combined 39-36 record.
